Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 - BBC IPlayer Parental Control?
Jan 29, 2011
While trying to get the iPlayer working (Ubuntu 10.10) I turned on parental control and set up all the passwords and other stuff it needed. Now when I try to play something with guidance it says wrong password and also wrong answer to security question. I know 100% I am putting the correct one in.

I work at a cybercafe and i am currently plagued by users who, despite the warning not to, continue to watch porn and use p2p software on my connection. I have done some preliminary research on how to filter the web content as well as to reduce the bandwidth used by p2p software on my network. I found that a solution that has worked for many with regard to web content control is danguardian + squid or privoxy in conjunction with a firewall like firehol or something of the sort. Others use an os like untangle or clear os and install it on a stand alone server. then others use open dns. although i would like the open dns solution, i will need to install a dns client, ddclient and i am a linux newbie so and ddclient requires some compiling or so, and i'm not yet into that. I am also currently not in the mood to dabble into untangle or clear os bcos it will cost me a lot do download the iso's. Internet access is costly over here.
Before i go ahead to implement the steps in any of the tutorials i have seen, i am wondering if such a measure will even help at all.You see, at my cafe, i use my server to share the connection to all my clients. I connect to the internet using a gsm modem. then i have two nic's. nic1 is set to share my connection and my router connects to that nic1. nic2 connects to my router using a static ip to enable communicate with my clients. If i implement something like dansguardian on my server, will it solve the problem for me, that is, do i have to also re-implement the steps i took to configure dansguardian on all the other pc's, that is, my clients?

I use the Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix. To limit the time of kids using the netbook I installed Nanny and set the timelimit to 0,5 h.
But for some reason it doesn't work. You can see the Nanny Icon, but it isn't logging of the user when the timelimit is reached...
Did anyone encounter the same problem or is it just me who did something wrong?

Is there any easily configured parental control tools for openSUSE? I used to use dansguardian, but I can't even find a repository with it in for openSUSE? On Mandriva there is a GUI for simple parental control (time & user based), + dansguardian is automatically set-up with squid etc. running appropriately.

I'm sure this used to work, but I don't think I've changed anything. When I try to "listen live" to BBC radio, I just get silence. I get a moving flash thingy, gently rotating, but no sound.
I'm using Squeeze with Iceweasel 3.5.16. It's got adobe flash, plus flashblock and noscript but I've said to temporarily allow all on the page and clicked the flash thingy. I get sound from ..... fine, and I can play all sorts of sound files usually. There's another radio station I can stream ok but it appears to be using a totem plugin rather than flash.
At first I thought iplayer was blocking me cos I'm outside the UK, but then I tried it on another machine with Win7 and IE, and that worked. My user agent says Firefox so it shouldn't be complaining about Iceweasel I guess. I also tried Epiphany but it just says "Sorry, your phone does not support BBC iPlayer."

I have difficulty in running Gnome Nanny in Lubuntu 10.04. Installation is easy just by adding repository and do sudo apt-get install. But clicking on "Parental Control" resulting in nothing and I do not know how to change the setting for example, email only and no browing?
I think Gnome Nanny is user friendly and suit my purpose to stop user access to browser internet but email only through zimbra.

I've just had Ubuntu installed on my machine and still finding my way around - What do I need to do to ensure the full size screen of Iplayer stays full size? At the moment I get about 5 mins viewing time and then it returns to its default size. Additionally no activity with the cursor or keypad turns my screen blank. I'm sure it just a setting somewhere that I need to tweek.

I have a problem with the BBC iplayer. I've upgraded ubuntu to 10.04 and iplayer has stopped working. The iplayer desktop refuses to run, both when the desktop (or menu item) is clicked, and also when a download is clicked on the iplayer site. I've tried uninstalling AdobeAir, and reinstalling. Also, I've completely removed AdobeAir and Iplayer and reinstalled. Still nothing. I'm running 10.04 on a Lenovo 3000 N200 with an Intel Centrino dual core. Flummoxed I'm flummoxed.

I've tried installing the BBC iplayer desktop, and am currently working my way through the maze of adobe air installer etc.
I wondered if it is possible to view the downloaded programs in a different viewer. I've got both Movie Player and VLC media player installed, but they will both only play for 1/2 second, then the program closes.
Is it possible, or must I persevere with BBC desktop iplayer ?

Just got my EeePC installed with the latest release of ubuntu netbook and have used update manager to get the system to the latest versions including the latest Adobe flash player.
I'm having problems with BBC iPlayer though. When I watch in full screen mode, it only lasts for 10 minutes then reverts back to the Firefox browser.

Recently (after the new version iPlayer was released I guess) I have been unable to download IPlayer content. On going to download, the IPlayer screen offers to install the IPlayer Desktop app, tries to install Air (already installed via Software Centre) and fails with a message like "A download error occurred. Try to download again?". Repeating just loops around to the same error message.
This happens on both my PC and laptop - both running Lucid. Have tried uninstalling the Iplayer app and Air, but still the same happens. Any suggestions, or do I have to wait for the Beeb to get it sorted?

I am looking at ripping the audio from a very old episode of 'In Our Time'. The episode is so old that it predates the podcast (which of course, would solve all my problems). I would like to use something like icecream or VLC to rip the audio from the 'Listen Now' link on this page. Unfortunately I am having a hard time finding the actual URL. The player itself is a Flash widget, so it is something more complicated than looking for OGG, mp3 or RAM file extensions in the page source. If there are some nifty command flags I should add when invoking icecream on the command line, I am all ears.

Installing on 10.10 64-bit works fine following the instructions on url. The BBC Desktop functions well once I reenabled KWallet.
My problem is that when I refresh the repositories the BBC Desktop is reported as broken, and the reason seems to be that AdobeAir does not show as installed in Synaptic. It does not matter if I install AdobeAir using .deb or .bin, it still is not reported as installed. Any ideas about how to make AdobeAir show as installed?

I am trying to download a programme from the BBC iplayer, using get_iplayer version 2.48. I get an error message saying that it needs rtmpdump >= 1.5, or flvstreamer. I have rtmpdump version 1.4 installed, but can't find either rtmpdump>=1.5 or flvstreamer for opensuse (11.1).

Sometimes in BBC iPlayer - Bigscreen the fullscreen video does not open on top, and then none of the lirc remote control commands (irxevent) function, not even Escape (nor Alt-TAB, which would bring the fullscreen on top if I used the keyboard - but sitting in the TV couch I would prefer using the remote only).
This often happens on my SuSE 10.2 partition, especially when wanting to resume a video, but never happens on my Kubuntu 9.10 partition. Both are 32-bit using KDE 4.3.5 Firefox 3.5.8 and Adobe Flash 10,0,45,2.
How can I get the fullscreen on top??

BBC iPlayer says
A problem occurred while downloading this programme
And when
Code:
get_iplayer 46 --get --output ~/Videos/BBC iPlayer/ --modes flashvhigh1
is run, get_iplayer gives this output

Anyone else struggling to play iplayer video? I've got the proprietary Flash plugin, which means it's probably not this "SWF Authentication" thing that there's been so much talk about.
I've rebooted, tried all sorts of tinkering, it loads the applet (I can see that Flash is loading OK because other things work, and right clicking on the applet gives the Flash menu)
However, clicking the play button does nothing.

I am considering installing Ubuntu on one of my desktop pcs used by my daughter. It's currently running Windows 7 32bit in a LUA, but is not as stable as I'd like. I am using Cyber patrol as a parental control system - which could be causing some of the instability. Is there any Parental Control software available for Unbuntu?

a widow with 4 kids - 2 of whom have severe depression & signs that one may be suicidal and is taking interst in some dark garbage on the net. Overall still a pretty good kid, but he surely doesn't need help online to get further in a hole. The 15 year old boy is highly intelligent (whole family actually) and knows how to get around software parental controls with peer to peer, live disks, etc. There are several PCs - both windows and mac, and an X-box.
I want to set up the household with a router or similar solution that is smarter than the kid and his friends. I figure protecting the network is the most tamper proof, all-encompassing way to go. In the short term, I really want to lock that home net solid, while still allowing mom to do her facebook and the oldest to use the web for schoolwork. Dlink Securespot technology seems to be the best overall solution I have found so far. If there is something better, I'm hoping someone here can steer me to it.

I am making a proxy server that us dansguardian to do parental controls features.
Is there anyway I can set it up so all devices must automatically go to the proxy server without additional configuration. I am thinking something like it gives DHCP what it shows that the proxy server is the gateway, and then the proxy server sends it to the router.

I initially downloaded Lucid as a 32 bit RC and loaded it on an old desktop to see what it looked like. As it worked a treat I downloaded the AMD64 bit final release and downloaded this to my laptop.
In each instance I loaded the restricted extras and also checked that adobe flash was loaded as flash was a problem with the BBC iPlayer before.
I can listen to the iPlayer on the 32 bit RC but not on the 64 bit final. Can anyone offer guidance on this.
PS. Trying the 32 bit RC on the laptop I was able to listen OK.

From the BBC site, if I try to download the desktop iPlayer, it tries to download Adobe Air installer, but says it "can't write the application to the hard disk", so it stops.
I've got the Flash player plugin installed, but not Flash 10, and I've tried to use the software centre to install Adobe Air from there, but it starts, runs for a couple of seconds, then stops. The same result if I try to download Flash 10.I've restarted and checked the installed software, but zilch.

Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705. In earlier versions of the sound settings in Ubuntu, I could press CTRL, then MASTER, PCM and LFE, and the volume buttons, whether on the front, using Fn + UP/DOWN or the slider in the systray would also lower or raise the volume of the subwoofer, because they would all be "bonded" together.
I have tried several things to make this work in later versions of Ubuntu, but nothing's worked. alsamixer won't allow it, sound settings are too simple, the ALSA-packages are so numerous it would take me months to check them all.
I know the solution is as simple as making the volume controls regulate all three, but I don't know how to do it anymore. And it's a real shame actually, because that's the only thing not working on this machine, and it was such an easy fix up until 9.10 (I think)
