Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound After Fresh Karmic Install?

Feb 17, 2010

I just installed karmic on my media server. With Jaunty, everything worked fine. I tried an upgrade, and go no sound. After poking around in the forms and trying some solutions still no sound.

So I decided to try a fresh install, again, no sound. I have cheched the obvious, mixer volumes, mute, output device, etc. But I can't seem to get it to work. I poked around in the forms and I've tried many of the solutions, but still no luck.

Here is my lspci output for my sound device...

Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 8345
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 20

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound On 10.4 Fresh Install ?

I just installed the latest version, updated it and everything, but I can't get my sound to work. I have an onboard sound card, and a Soundblaster too.

Here are the lspci results:

And the aplay -l results:

I'd like to be able to get my Soundblaster to work, cause I plan on dual booting with WinXp, but if the only way is the onboard way, I'm cool with it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound After Fresh Install

Jun 29, 2011

My sound was working fine when I was trying out Ubuntu on a partition, I was so chuffed with it I did a fresh install. I have no sound. VLC, Amarok, Clementine, Audacity, Audacious, every audio player in the Ubuntu Universe doesn't play sound. Obviously it's something 'hardware' or 'driver' connected because it all worked perfectly when I still had Windows as the 'host' partition. I'm not going back to Windows I'll try out OpenSuse or something to see if the sound thing happens on that.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound In Fresh 11.4 Install

Mar 10, 2011

Just installed OpenSUSE 11.4, and so far I love everything about it, the only thing that's not working is the sound. I have my sound card setup in YaST -> Sound like I always have, and it recognizes it as M-Audio Delta Audiophile 24/96. I also installed alsa-tools-gui to get Envy24Control for ICE1712 chipsets, and I unmuted all the outputs, and raised the DAC volume. My speakers are on, and all the cables check out. Here is all my multimedia information:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Driver Missing In Fresh Install?

Sep 15, 2010

I've never had any problems before, but I just did a fresh install of 10.04.1 on a brand new drive yesterday. I noticed this morning that I have no sound drivers(under the hardware tab of sound preferences, there is nothing listed). I found a thread that had this line to run:

Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
And I got:
Code:
Codec: Realtek ALC888
Not sure what to do now though.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Fresh 10.10 Install - No Sound Card Installed

Dec 15, 2010

I will tell you this: The hard ware is a MSI mother board [AMD flavored] [exact numbers, not known at the moment, but can be recovered]. The audio is built into the mother board. It worked fine with Ubuntu 10.04 I read a few posts here and there, and ran a hardware diagnostic. It came back and said no sound card was installed.

Ubuntu :: Fresh Install Karmic - System Not Reading DVD

Jan 13, 2010

I have had a new install of Karmic from CD and have done all updates and added a few applications like VLC and a few others. I have several different media players, Totem, VLC, Xine, and gxine. I started out thinking Totem might be enough, but added VLC as it can handle just about anything, and then the other just to see of any thing happened.

I have installed all restricted and unrestricted packages from the Medibuntu depositories I can find. Still my laptop will not read any kind of DVD. I am region 2, but have tried both bought region 1 and region 2 DVDs. I had this problem last time I installed Ubuntu, but after installations of a few applications and messing about it suddenly worked. I really didn't know why or what suddenly was working.

Ubuntu Installation :: A7N8X Deluxe Sound Fresh Install Sound Is Muffled And All Bass?

Jan 14, 2010

Recently installed Ubuntu 9.1 following an easy how to. The install session went really well, smooth and only had one little speed bump when deciding which drive to install to (running raid and did not want to loose other partition). Like most speed bumps I got passed it. Ran all the updates then decided to start listening to music with Rythmbox Music Player. The sound coming out of my Klipsch Pro Media 4.1 was muffled and sounded like just the subwoofer was on. I checked all connections and they were fine. I tried looking for equalizer but did not find it and then noticed the sound was like a skipping record. So I looked it up and came across some posts that I could not figure out if they were for my problem. Seemed to me they were just leading me in circles.

'm trying to set up at least 5.1 sound in my fresh ubuntu 10.10. I have stereo sound but failed when trying to set up the rest. I've googled it, read through couple of pages and tried the following:

- I've installed alsa 1.0.24

- I've added the following lines to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf

Code:

default-sample-channels = 6
default-channel-map = front-left,front-right,rear-left,rear-right,center,lfe

- I've added

Code:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-digout

There is no 'Profile' button/menu in Sounds preferences/Hardware.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound On Fresh 11.4 Installation

Mar 14, 2011

After spending a full day messing with my dual monitors displays-should-not-be-cloned-by-default, I have now come to the sound. The config looks like the 11.3 setup (I alternate partitions from one install to the next), but all I get is silence. KMix won't run. Amrok is silent. "Sound Configuration" gets me to a window showing two cards I know nothing about. I've got an nVIDIA chip on the mother board and the two cards listed are "M2N72-D w/ snd-hda-intel" and "Creative Tech, Ltd. w/ snd-usb-audio". I'd have gone back to 11.3 where this stuff works, but my configuration files were all auto-updated and don't really work any more. I guess I ought to have archived the config files, but I didn't and I'm here now.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound After Upgrade To Karmic?

Jan 5, 2010

After i upgraded to karmic i experienced that the sound of spotify was at times strange. When i started a new song there was some strange plucking sounds, can most be understood as the sound a old LP-player makes when there is dust on the record. Not much but more than enough that I can hear it and wish it wasn't there. After some time of playing the songs sometimes was totally distorted by "disturbance" and it became impossible to even hear that there was a song there. Like when you are out of reception of a radio channel.

I did some research and upgraded to the wine1.2 with "custom" pulsaudio drivers. Then the total distortion was gone, but the, always present, plocking sound still was there. I have tested adjusting PCM volume, have some volume on mono, upgrading to newer pulsaudio drivers. The same problem is when ever my dear computer i producing sound. Spotify, firefox, rythmbox and mplayer. I can't see any answers after spending some time on google. I hoped i could fix this without deleting and removing pulsaudio.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound In XP After Installing Karmic

Jan 7, 2010

I've been using windows xp (I play chess in the chessbase server) and Ubuntu in dual boot for quite a long time with no problems. My onboard sound worked perfectly in both OS. Then I decide to buy a SB Audigy PCI sound card. It works great in Ubuntu, but there was no sounds in windows. After doing a lot of research, I read that a clean install could solve the problem. I reinstalled windows xp and the sound drivers of the sound card and alas! the sound card worked.

Then I restored grub to access Ubuntu and when I reboot to windows...I got no sounds again. So, my conclusion is that in some way the Ubuntu installation affects the sound card when working in windows. I may return this sound card. The sound card is:
Creative Labs SB0570L4 Sound Blaster Audigy SE Sound Card
I'm running windows xp 64 bit and ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.

I've tried everything in the standard troubleshooting guide, the sticky threads and plenty of forum searches but so far I've come up with nada. For some reason Ubuntu refuses to see my soundcard, no matter how much I twist and tweak it. It's an Asus M3A78 motherboard with an on-board Realtek ALC1200 chip (snd-hda-intel). Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound - Thinkpad R61i - Karmic?

Dec 8, 2010

I had taken a long break from Ubuntu, but now I'm back on it. I just installed 9.10 Karmic on my Lenovo Thinkpad R61i, and it's beautiful....except there's no sound.

I have gone through the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide, to no avail. As well, I have searched the all of the Internets, and still have no sound.

Here is some system info:

Code:
tomdabomb2u@tomdabomb2u-thinkpad:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
code....

I also added options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad to the end of my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file. Still nothing. I would really like to hear the Antoine Dodson song on my laptop...not sure how much longer I can go.

Note: Everything in Sound Preferences appears to be working, I just still can't HEAR anything.

Ubuntu :: No Sound On Lucid Fresh Install

Jun 23, 2010

I tried Intrepid on this computer a few years back, and remember sweating over my computer for days trying to get the sound to work, before eventually giving up and going back to Windows. Now I figured I'd give it a second go. 100% fresh install, Lucid Lynx. I was hoping maybe the new version would have fixed whatever I was having trouble with before. No such luck. Have checked that nothing is muted, in the tray icon and in alsamixer and in a bunch of others. Have made sure that I'm in all the proper groups.

"aplay -l" gives me:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Karmic: Sound Playing Through Subwoofer Not Speakers

Feb 3, 2010

The sound doesn't play through the main speakers, but instead plays through the subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop. The headphone/mic jacks don't work either. I've listed the relevant lspci -v code in my other thread, but I'm not sure what other information is needed (like I'm trying to find the exact sound card I have so I can google around for a solution but since everything in laptops is so specialized I don't really know what to look for).

I do apologize if this question has somehow been answered elsewhere but I've waited 2+ weeks for a response and have gotten nothing. Also, I tried following this sticky thread but the link it refers to in step (3) under general help does not work, so I cannot proceed with any of the directions.

I am anxious to resolve this problem as I just discovered compiz-fusion and it just makes it even more fun to be loaded into my Ubuntu install, and I'm anxious to make the full-time transition to Ubuntu but I won't be able to do that if I can't play music.
