Ubuntu Multimedia :: Large *.mp4 Files In Gtkpod - Hangs At "Copying Tracks" At 0%

Jul 27, 2010

I am dual booting XP and Ubuntu 10.04, but in the future I will be getting a new machine and I will only be running Ubuntu and won't have access to iTunes. Because I have an iPod Touch, I have been trying to find workarounds for syncing everything that iTunes took care of in the past. One problem I have is managing movies. I have looked through various media players/iPod management tools (Amarok, Rhythmbox, gtkpod) and I am using Rhythmbox to sync my music and and attempting to use gtkpod to sync my movies.

gtkpod is able to sync songs (Tested with a few minute test clip) and short *.mp4 files (15mb I know for sure from test). I am unable, however, to get it to sync a movie (~700mb) I am able to drag it onto my iPod in gtkpod, but when I try to save the changes and write the files, it hangs at "Copying Tracks" at 0%. It eventually crashes during the couple times I have tried to wait it out. So this being my situation, my question is, is there a size limit to the *.mp4 files I can sync to my iPod Touch via gtkpod? is there any other tools that you know of that I can sync videos to my iPod with?

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Losing Files When Copying Many Files Or Large Folders?

Feb 14, 2010

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.

I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.

Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.

It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.

Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.

The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

Fedora Hardware :: Low Transfer Rate When Copying Large Files Over Wireless

Jan 11, 2010

I just bought a HP 3085dx laptop with an intel 5100 agn wireless card.
The problem: copying a big file over the wireless to a gigabit hardwired to the router computer only gives an average 3.5MB/Second transfer rate. If I do the same copy from my wireless-n macbook pro to the same computer. I get a transfer rate of about 11MB/sec. Why the big difference? I noticed the HP always connects to the 2.4 GHZ band instead of the 5GHZ bands...

On the HPL

I am not getting any errors. I don't know why the bit rate is not known. My airport extreme base station typically reports that the 'rate' for the hp is typically 250~300MBi and about the same for the MacBook Pro. The hp is about 6 inchs away from the base station. Is there anyway to get the rascal to go mo'faster? Is there anyway to get the rascal to use the 5GHZ band.

General :: Cp Adds Exclamation Points When Copying Very Large Text Files?

Jul 13, 2009

For my research I have some very large files that are basically millions of lines of ten columns of numbers. These files can be up to 5 GB in size. Recently I noticed that when I made a copy of one of my files, some exclamation points appeared in it where there should not be any: in front of random numbers throughout the file. Making another copy of the file would result in exclamation points in front of different numbers in different parts of the file. Doing this many times has given me up to four exclamation points in different parts of the file. Sometimes the file copies just fine without producing any extraneous exclamation points.Additionally, I have occasionally seen a "^K" where there should be a newline (the data that should have been on the next line was instead on the previous line with a ^K in front of it) in copies that I have made of my files. I don't know if this is related or not.

Ubuntu :: Copying Hangs When Transferring Files?

Dec 10, 2010

when I try to transfer files between flash drives, it starts to copy normally and then after few seconds it starts to lag. Transfer rate drops with each second by 0.2 MB down until 5 MB/s where it completely hangs. This happens to every single flash drive I put in and this is annoying because I have external HardDrive connected over USB port and I keep all my data in there, so when I try to transfer the files from the hard drive to the flash drive - it lags and hangs. Same thing if I want to copy from internal harddrive to flash drive. Although everything is fine when I copy from the flash drive to the internal harddrive and everything is fine when flash drive or the external harddrive is alone (no other flash drives or something is connected).

I am also using Ubuntu 10.04. I have tried transfering files on my netbook running ubuntu, because I thought that it might be a USB port issue but the same thing happened on the netbook too...

The 11.04 installation CD makes it through the HD partitioning (erase everything), Computer name, time zone, and keyboard detection, but hangs after starting the "Copying files" stage of the install. The progress bar stops just below the in "Copying files...".

The 10.04 installation CD makes it through the "Installing the base system", "Retrieving console-terminus" with the progress bar stalled at 6%. Although the computer is old, Vista successfully installs on it.

CentOS 5 :: 5.5 Hangs When Copying Files To Storage

Sep 7, 2011

I built a centralized storage system a year ago (Aug. 2010) and for the past 10 months it has preformed flawlessly. About two months ago (July 2011) I began having problems writing to my centralized storage. The copies (cp -rpv) fail whether they are nfs or samba mounted disks to my centralized storage.

Attempting to copy either frame sequence (.dpx, .tiffs, .targas) or .MOV files now lock up my system and knock my storage offline.

The error that continues to echo back when this happens is :

I have not made any changes or updates to my storage configuration since building it last August 2010. I have reached out to Areca, and they found nothing wrong with the Raid Controller or my Raid settings.

I tried to troubleshoot all the basics - swapped out cables, replaced the WD storage disks, changed switches still the problem persists.

If anyone else has experienced this issue please let me know what you did to fix it. I can also post any error logs or message logs if that would be of assistance.

Below are the specs of my storage system

Fedora Networking :: 12 Hangs On Transfer Of Large Files?

Dec 9, 2009

I have Fedora 12 (with all the latest patches, including the 2.6.31.6-162 kernel) installed on a new Supermicro SYS-5015A-H 1U Server [Intel Atom 330 (1.6GHz) CPU, Intel 945GC NB, Intel ICH7R SB, 2x Realtek RTL8111C-GR Gigabit Ethernet, Onboard GMA950 video]. This all works great until I try to transfer a large file over the network, then the computer hard locks, forcing a power-off reset.

Some info about my setup:

[root@Epsilon ~]# uname -a
Linux Epsilon 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Fri Dec 4 00:43:59 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[root@Epsilon ~]# dmesg | grep r8169
r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded

[code]....

I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the r8169 driver (what I'm seeing is somewhat reminiscent of the bug reported here). The computer will operate fine for days as a (low volume) web server, and is reasonably stable transferring small files, but as when as I try to transfer a large file (say during a backup to a NAS or a NFS share), the computer will hard lock (no keyboard, mouse, etc.) at some point into the transfer of the file. It doesn't seem to matter how the file is transferred (sftp, rsync to NFS share, etc.).

Debian :: Resync Hangs After Copying A Certain Number Of Files

Nov 9, 2015

I currently have a problem in running rsync on 64 bit Debian Jessie (although the problem also occurred with 64 bit Debian Wheezy)I am trying to use rsync to archive my home directory (which is on a hard disk) to a USB memory stick. The home directory is about 18GB in size and the memory stick has 32GB.

Unfortunately, rsync hangs after copying a certain number of files and the process eventually has to be killed. Rsync was rerun but hung again at about the same point as before. This has now happened several times. Each time the hang occurs at about the same point.Use of strace after the hang shows that rsync appears to be processing a pdf file at the time, although not always the same pdf file.I originally had the rsync hang problem on a PC which ran 64 bit Wheezy and which used a USB 2.0 port.

I now am running rsync on another PC, which runs 64 bit Jessie and which uses a USB 3.0 port..I have also tried three different USB sticks, two from one manufacturer and the third from another manufacturer. All give similar rsync hangs.

Ubuntu :: Copying A Large File From The Network?

Feb 17, 2010

I am trying to copy a file from a network resource on my Local Area Network, which is about 4.5 GB. I copy this file through GNOME copying utilities by first going to Places --> Network and then selecting the Windows Share on another computer on my network. I open it and start copying the file to my FAT32 drive by Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. It copies well up-to 4 GB and then it hangs.

After trying it almost half a dozen times I got really annoyed and left it hung and went to bed. Next morning when I checked a message box saying "file too large to write" has appeared.

I am very annoyed. I desperately need that file. It's an ISO image and it is not damaged at all, it copies well to any windows system. Also, I have sufficient space on the drive in which I am trying to copy that file.

Ubuntu Servers :: System Crash When Copying Large File

Jun 15, 2010

I am having a bit of a problem with my Ubuntu Server 10.04 install. I think it might be a kernel problem. Basically, what happens is when I copy a large file (a 160GB disk image) to my drive (>60GB) the system consistently crashes after about 60GB of the file is transferred. It doesn't matter if I am sending the file using cifs, or over SSH. Checking syslog (paste dump here), it seems these flush errors always appear shortly before the crash occurs. The destination filesystem is a hardware RAID 10 array with 2TB of space. It is formatted as EXT4.

Ubuntu :: Copying Large File Blocks Externally Causes Disk Full

Oct 15, 2010

This has happened several times now, with 9.10 and 10.04. I back up my photos periodically to external drives, using Nautilus. At the next attempted login Gnome won't start and sometimes gives power manager incorrect installation error.

First time this happened I was stumped and eventually did a clean install. Second time, I found advice elsewhere in this forum to solve this by emptying root trash, which did the trick. This time, however, root trash has nothing in it and 2 users trash were insignificant (I emptied them all anyway with rm -r). Tried looking for enormous directories but couldn't find a smoking gun. I would rather not end up doing another clean install - a painful and extreme solution. I'm continuing to look for solutions to the immediate problem, but my question really is, what causes this and how do I prevent it in the future? I've run Computer Janitor regularly and ran apt-get clean but no help. Should I do all my large scale copying from terminal? I'm not a total noob, but close.

I have met this strange behavior after copying archived data to my new Debian installation. The copyings were "huge tasks", for example 2000 files, more than 1GB total. "Small tasks" seem to copy okay. Nevertheless, the danger or missing files is annoying. What to do?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Hangs During Large File Transfers?

Aug 1, 2010

I recently built a home media server and decided on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything is running well except when I try to transfer my media collection from other PCs where it's backed up to the new machine. Here's my build and various situations:

Intel D945GSEJT w/ Atom N270 CPU
2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM (this board uses laptop chipset)
External 60W AC adapter in lieu of internal PSU
133x CompactFlash -> IDE adapter for OS installation
2(x) Samsung EcoGreen 5400rpm 1.5TB HDDs formatted for Ext4

Situation 1: Transferring 200+GB of files from an old P4-based system over gigabit LAN. Files transferred at 20MBps (megabytes, so there's no confusion). Took all night but the files got there with no problem. I thought the speed was a little slow, but didn't know what to expect from this new, low-power machine.

Situation 2: Transferring ~500GB of videos from a modern gaming rig (i7, 6GB of RAM, running Windows7, etc etc). These files transfer at 70MBps. I was quite impressed with the speed, but after about 30-45 minutes I came back to find that Ubuntu had hung completely.

I try again. Same thing. Ubuntu hangs after a few minutes of transferring at this speed. It seems completely random. I've taken to transferring a few folders at a time (10GB or so) and so far it has hung once and been fine the other three times. Now, I have my network MTU set from automatic to 9000. Could this cause Ubuntu to hang like this? When I say hang I mean it freezes completely requiring a reboot. The cursor stops blinking in a text field, the mouse is no longer responsive, etc.

Ubuntu :: SANE / HPLIP And F300 Hangs With Large Scan Areas

May 5, 2011

SANE + HPLIP 3.11.3a-1 + Tomato v1.28.8754 ND USB Std + Hp Deskjet F380 (F300 series) only works with small scan areas. This error is affecting SANE running on my tomato router, this affects all computers that try to use that scanner, regardless of platform, in fact, it affects scans originating from the router itself. I believe that it could also happen on ubuntu if I had the same configuration as the router, it seems to be an error that would happen on any platform with the same SANE/hplip settings and hardware (HP Deskjet F380). The problem is also related to DPIs, but I can't manage to get one full page with 75 DPI, which is the lowest possible. If I get a small area (around 1/4 of the full glass) it will scan at some times.

If I increase the DPI, it won't scan. I will get an Error during device I/O, even if I try to scan directly from scanimage. I would like to have the scanner function of my AiO printer working, at least to scan the full glass in low resolutions (<=150). I can't load previews as well. I thought it could be a memory problem, since it does scan small areas, but it is not, in fact, the memory usage doesn't increase much during the scan, I even created a 128MB swap partition in my flash drive (was afraid of doing so, since it would wear it quickly, will probably remove now), but it didn't change anything, it still doesn't scan with more than 55% of the router's memory (16MB) free and more than 97% of the swap memory free.
