Is it possible to jailbreak an IOS device(specifically Itouch 4G, 4.3.1) using a Linux OS such as Ubuntu? I just spent quite a bit of time searching the forums and am very surprised there doesn't seem to be an answer already out there. I would think Linux and jailbreaking go together like peanut butter and jelly, but everyone who's done it seems to have used Windows or Mac.
I'm thinking about jailbreaking my iPod touch 4g with ios 4.3 using the new redsnow. Can you do this using wine or do I have to go and use windows. Also, will the jailbreak delete my apps, and do I have to update to 4.3.1.
I've successfully jailbroken my girlfriend's iPhone 3gs.
The phone had no service. She switched to a cheap local-only carrier which did not do iPhones, so her current phone is a cheap blister pack phone.
Now she wants to put the iPhone on T-Mobile. The T-Mobile guys want it jailbroken and unlocked first. I got it jailbroken by tethering it. Now I need 2 apps on there and I have no service so I can't get them there.
Repeat, this is NOT the NO SERVICE bug that happens when you switch service on an otherwise active phone. The contract has been expired for months, so there is no fix for it.
I have joined my wireless N network, but to no avail.
I have at my disposal a Mac, an Ubuntu box and a Vista box.
I also tried jailbreaking my iphone but its firmware is too new and it won't break. Maybe tomorrow. I thought maybe I could break mine, download some apps, transfer them to some PC and then move them to the GFs phone. That didn't work either.
I've tried every way possible to jailbreak the iphone's 3.1.2 firmware with windows running inside of VirtualBox. I kept a blog of the whole process here [URL]...
i'm looking for a media player (or even better a plugin for Rhythmbox) that can send files from the playlist directly to a mounted usb device (not an ipod, an android phone's sd card)
used a plugin in foobar on windows, is there anything like that for rhythmbox?
I am using a sound card with the C-media CMI8788 chip. This card has both analog and digital outputs, which Linux sees as two different output devices.
The Problem I am having with VLC is that it always changes the output device in its settings to analog. I constantly have to be going into VLC advanced settings and picking Alsa: Digital for the output.
After that the sound outputs fine.
This only happens with VLC. All other programs on my pc output sound perfectly fine. I am using Lucid.
How can I set the default to be the digital output?
I installed "Theocracy" on my 9.10 Karmic system. The installer asks for a sound device, dev/dsp is the default and I didn't change it. When I now try to start the game, I get the following error: Unable to open sound device: Device or resource busy Aborted Execution of /usr/games/theocracy_base/theocracy.real failed! What is the sound device when using PulseAudio on Karmic?
I own a Creative Zen, and have already successfully used both Rhythmbox and Gnomad to transfer files to it. But the problem is that I can't manage my "files" (not my "songs"). Banshee didn't work, and Exaile is not recognising my Zen (probably I'm missing some libraries or plugins). I've heard Exaile let's me manage the files in my MTP device, is that so?Whenever I transfer any song to my Zen, it is transfered to my /music folder instead of being transfered into an /artist-album or an artist/album folder. It is kind of messy, I want to keep my files organized.
And if I try to move my files manually (from my HD to my device, or within my device) by letting Nautilus automatically mount my Zen as an external device, then it doesn't recognizes the files I've moved. So, is there any workaround for me to manage my files in Zen without making them unrecognizable to it, say, using Rhythmbox? Or is there any other software that allows me to manage my files in such manner?(From what I've googled, it seems that this is a general problem for most of MTP devices, hence the title of the thread.)
some days ago I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and now I have a problem with my webcam. I like to use chatroulette and mebeam, therefore I have to use programs like webcamstudio/flashcam... (Flash does not accept the normal cam device v4l2 and webcamstudio puts it to v4l loopback). The problem is that Ubuntu is detecting only v4l2 and not v4l, so that I don't have an output device in webcamstudio.
When I type: ls -l /dev/video* the answer is only: crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 0 2010-05-08 17:59 /dev/video0 and nothing more
This appears to be a frequently-asked question, but unfortunately all the answers I have been able to find are either outdated or refer to software I am not using. [Edit: this is Lucid upgraded from Karmic on a Dell Dimension 4550] If I plug in my antique little Kodak EZ-200, it appears to be recognised; that is, /var/log/messages says:

How do I find out what module has claimed the camera, and permanently remove it or prevent it from ever doing so again? Is there some method of telling gphoto2 (or any other camera-handling program) to stamp all over anything else that has laid claim to a device and brute-force its way?
I don't have any sound in my external device (TV). I'm attempting to watch a movie on the VLC player but I can't seem to get the sound to work through my television speakers! They are coming out of my computer speakers just fine though.
I just recently purchased an iPod touch 4G running iOS 4.1 under the assumption that it would play nice with Ubuntu as stated here:..Devices/iPhone. It doesn't! I can't seem to get it to work. It shows up as a camera with 86MB of available space. I can access the photos that are on the device, but nothing else. I really would like to be able to transfer music to the device, but nothing seems to work. Rhythmbox doesn't even seem to recognize that it's there, the device isn't showing up in /media, and I can't seem to get a mount point. Has anybody out there had any success in this area? I've tried on both my 10.04 Desktop and 10.10 laptop machines
I have this software I want to use to extract data from a Polar heart rate monitor. Everything related to sound is working flawlessly. I just need to know the device name of the front microphone ("microphone" 2" in sound properties) so that I can insert it in the following cli command for a script: "rs200_decode -m /dev/XXX -b -o /home/user/dumb.bin"
I checked the forums but I only see references to /dev/dsp, /dev/audio, etc. I don't have any of those but rather /dev/snd/controlC0, hwC0D2, pcmC0D0c, pcmC0D0p, pcmC0D1p and pcmC0D2c.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit. The sound card is a generic HDA Intel audio chip. Lspci outputs: Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller.
have a system that has a GTX285 and a PCI 8400GS. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 I'm trying to get the system to use the 8400GS to run X windows and the GTX285 to use as the compute device. Everytime I start up my system with both cards it always uses the GTX285 as the display device. How do I configure it to use the 8400 instead? I've tried the nvidia settings program and I don't see how to do this. Do I need to change something in my xorg.conf ? I don't know much about editing this file.
I'm back with irritating questions. Ubuntu headless server, 10.04
I would like to set up my Linux box as a media streamer. I have Media Tomb set up so that the PS3, Xbox and other PCs can access my media over the LAN but I want to listen to my music on my iPhone when I am at work. What is the best way to do this? I have searched the interwebs as well as these forums with confusing results. I have found many options to stream while on my LAN but few to stream over the internet.
I rarely watch video on my iPhone so that is not a feature I need, just music.
While I am making a thread, is there anything that will stream .mov files to my PS3? I'd love to be able to watch my HD iPhone vids on the large TV in the living room.
I am trying to write a script to turn my HTPC off automatically and turn it back on again at a specified interval.
I've got the turn on off bit sorted using /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm but I want the script to not turn the machine off if say something is downloading, I am currently watching something etc and i dont think I will have any trouble with that.
But what I would really like to be able to do is tell if my TV is currently on. I dont think anything x11 related would work here and this may not even be possible. Does Ubuntu "know" if it's display device is powered on or not? if so can I interrogate this somehow?
I have been trying to get tvtime or any tv package to work with my Pinnacle PCTV HD usb but I have not had success. I have correctly installed every driver imaginable. So, here is what it what it comes down to: When I open tvtime it says "cannot open capture device /dev/video0" and the screen is blue. But my usb PCTV HD stick is NOT /dev/video0 so the question is how can I get tvtime to look for the usb tv tuner rather than video0?
I'm using Ubuntu since some month and lovin it. Only one thing with Rhythmbox and my HTC mobile phone running Win mobile 6.1 is annoying: The mobile device is never recognised as a music player nor as a usb device so I can't load music via Rhythmbox. Ubuntu recognises it as umts-modem which I like and would like to maintain. But is there any way to load music on it at the same time? I've already tried different settings on the devices usb-to-pc settings menu, but this only switches on and off the modem functionality but doesn't make ubuntu recognise the device as usb or music player.
I'm using an Intel 965 GM graphics chip with the "intel" driver. I'm curious as to why it doesn't seem to be using any of the options that I'm placing under the Device section of xorg.conf. Here's an example:
In my Xorg.0.log file, I get the following message: (WW) intel(0): Option "AccelMethod" is not used Why would it not be allowing me to use options such as this? I know that my driver and video card are compatible with this option, as is indicated in this manual: [URL]
I've just upgraded to kubuntu 9.10, and I'm getting strange errors when trying to copy files onto my MP3 player, a SANSA M250 (2GB). df claims it's at 57% capacity (and the figures make sense for that, as well as having about the quantity of music which half fills the SANSA) but when I try to copy a file - from the command line, from exaile, or with the file manager, I get a "No space left on device" error:
Code: $ df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 73939452 42184580 27998880 61% / udev 512472 264 512208 1% /dev none 512472 1752 510720 1% /dev/shm none 512472 96 512376 1% /var/run none 512472 0 512472 0% /var/lock none 512472 0 512472 0% /lib/init/rw /dev/sdc 1996000 1125056 870944 57% /media/SANSA M250 $ cp test.mp3 /media/SANSA M250/ CP: cannot create regular file `/media/SANSA M250/test.mp3': No space left on device The MP3 being copied is 2MB in size so should fit easily.
There were no problems until upgrading, when I also moved from amarok to exaile - because amarok2 doesn't have the functionality I want from a player. But this happens even if exaile isn't running, so exaile shouldn't be the problem. How can I diagnose what's going on?
I have a Zotac IONITX-F-E motherboard (Intel Atom Dual Core 1.6 GHz + Nvidia ION) -based box with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit installed. My goal is to play back 1080p video.
I have mplayer installed (which I compiled from source with --enable-vdpau). I try to run mplayer with this command:
Code: mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau path/to/myfile.mkv I get the following message in my terminal: Code: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. I have libvdpau-dev and libvdpau1 installed.
[Code]....
Before doing all this, I was able to get the nvidia 195.36.24 driver installed, but I am still having some trouble, which may or may not be related.
I use a USB webcam with a built in microphone. It works fine, but every time I plug it in I have to go to sound properties and select it as the input device. There are no other input devices present on my system. Since it's the only one there, is there any way to get it to automatically select when I plug it in? If not, I think that would be good functionality to add. Does anyone know who or what team to contact about that?
I am trying to install the video driver for my hp a1010n. The video device is a 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics. I have seen a few sites that have referenced this but they were not written for new users and I could not figure out how to install it. I am fairly adept at usage of computers (mostly Windows OS) but am not yet familiar with Ubuntu so I am aware of the absolute basics... I am just not sure what commands to use in the terminal and etc.. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
I am trying to setup a complex audio system, but I won't bore you with the details (unless you ask). Basically, I want to have pulseaudio only use one specific device and ignore the rest of the devices.
i know skype on Linux is crap but i have no choice as i now have only Ubuntu installed on this pc & I NEED SKYPE.so with the new version how do i select a particular sound device.i ask because skype only lets me select a specific sound 'platform' (pulseaudio).i have a motherboard with on-board sound & a USB voip phone (us robotics) and it the usb voip phone i want to use solely for skype
so is there something i can tell pulse audio that i want skype to ONLY use the usb phone or do i have to use the stupid sound preferences to change the system wide device to the usb phone which makes the whole thing a hindrance because i have no idea when someone calls me & when i have to quickly change the settings then turn off music then try to answer the call the person calling has gone!!!i like to have music playing in the background out of my hifi & the error noises come out of the usb phone as well when this is selected & to be honest it makes having a pc setup with multiple devices pointless and a hindrance
