I don't have any sound in my external device (TV). I'm attempting to watch a movie on the VLC player but I can't seem to get the sound to work through my television speakers! They are coming out of my computer speakers just fine though.
View 5 RepliesI have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo my Microsoft Lifecam NX-3000 used to work with 9.04, but I can't seem to get anything from it now (Xubuntu 9.10). It still shows up fine when i enter lsusb, but it won't show up as a video device anywhere else. I have faith that this bug is a simple fix for someone who knows what they're doing, but unfortunately I don't. If it's relevant this is on my aging Toshiba Satellite.

Currently I use JACK to control the transport of all the aps i use to make music with ardour, hydrogen and rosegarden mainly. I also have an external midi drum machine that I sometimes hook up into the mix via midi in/out, my drum machine (yamaha ry to be exact can send and receive midi data. My question is can I use the transport controls on my external drum machine to control JACK's transport controls? If there is already am app that does something like that, excellent!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed "Theocracy" on my 9.10 Karmic system. The installer asks for a sound device, dev/dsp is the default and I didn't change it. When I now try to start the game, I get the following error:

Execution of /usr/games/theocracy_base/theocracy.real failed!
What is the sound device when using PulseAudio on Karmic?
I delete input device. How to fox it? All the sound is working only microphone problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB Sound Card (Audiophile Fubar II DAC) that worked flawlessy up to one or two months ago when suddenly it stopped to make any sound. The card, speakers, etc. are working, I tried it from another OS running on the very same PC. The card is detected, but it's dumb

The card appears under System->Preferences->Sound->Hardware but there are two unusual things (if I remember correctly). 1. The green sound card icon on the left is not shown, it's not gray, there is nothing (but the USB Headset, that works well, doesn't have the icon either so maybe it'ok).
2. From the Profiles dropdown I can only choose from four options (off, analog mono, analog stereo and digital duplex). Before there were more (digital output only, etc.).I checked the levels several times. Another external USB card (SB Xi-Fi 5.1) works well.

i know skype on Linux is crap but i have no choice as i now have only Ubuntu installed on this pc & I NEED SKYPE.so with the new version how do i select a particular sound device.i ask because skype only lets me select a specific sound 'platform' (pulseaudio).i have a motherboard with on-board sound & a USB voip phone (us robotics) and it the usb voip phone i want to use solely for skype
so is there something i can tell pulse audio that i want skype to ONLY use the usb phone or do i have to use the stupid sound preferences to change the system wide device to the usb phone which makes the whole thing a hindrance because i have no idea when someone calls me & when i have to quickly change the settings then turn off music then try to answer the call the person calling has gone!!!i like to have music playing in the background out of my hifi & the error noises come out of the usb phone as well when this is selected & to be honest it makes having a pc setup with multiple devices pointless and a hindrance
I looked around the settings on Ubuntu and I cannot prevent sound from being played on my laptop speakers when external (more powerful) speakers are plugged in. Windows automatically defers all sound output to the external ones as soon as it is plugged in.

When I first did this it gave me a error about not being able to put the sound on-top of 'pulseaudio'. Well this well about the last straw between me and Mr. 'PulseAudio', so away he went. I removed the demon via this instruction. [ubuntu] Safely Remove Pulseaudio?
I then tried connecting to my bluetooth headset again, no errors. But the bluetooth sound device does not show up in any mixer, or application. What else do I need to do to get this working again. I know my hardware is fine, it used to work in the previous version of Ubuntu and it all works on my wifes Windoze XP computer.
i am using ubuntu studio karmic and i have a digitech vx400 audio effects pedal which serves as an audio in/out midi in/out device via usb. i can sucessfully set it as the system sound device in system>preferences>sound for both input and output. but, when i play audio through it it only works for a few minutes before the sound stops completely. if i leave the system settings set to the internal sound card and configure jack audio connection kit to go to the usb device, i get the same results on the usb sound. a few minutes of playback at the most.i can restart sound with either "pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start" or "alsactl init" in either situation. just requires restarting the programs. same results after restarting. i think this is alsa related as i have both the system sound and jack using the alsa driver, but i don't truly understand the relationship between pulseaudio and alsa.

Although my sound disappeared in 9.10 only, I thought maybe upgrading might help, but there is no change.
I guess everything is installed fine.
But still aplay -l command shows "NO sound cards.. "
Moreover the sound preferences shows no hardware, no input and a dummy stereo output.
I have banged my head a lot trying various things written in forums and all but no success.
One more thing : When I test "osstest" , I get sound in both the earphones , but altogether there is no sound. I am very much confused.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.
Until yesterday, my Audiophile sound card was working beautifully. I ran the latest update, and now it doesn't show up under Sound Preferences. (When I plugged in a USB headset, that appeared under Sound Preferences and worked just fine.)
The sound card IS listed under aplay -l.

If I run Alsamixer from the terminal, the correct Audiophile sound card is the one shown.
I have two sound cards active on this machine and they both work fine. However I would like to blacklist one card from being used for audio capture in KDE, because I am already using it outside of KDE for timed recording. The problem is that when I start amarok while timed recording is going on, it attempts to probe the card and this causes the recording to abort.
In Configure desktop > Multimedia, I can see the two cards. I can alter the priority but the Remove button is greyed out. So I can't remove a card from phonon.
Searching around for where phonon stores its configuration led me to ~/.config/kde.org/libphonon.conf. This certainly looks like the info I was trying to edit, but it's encoded in some way code...
I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop then immediately upgraded to Karmic 9.10. Pulseaudio installed by default. There's no sound although the mute button is not checked and the volume slide control is at medium. lspci gives:

So, it appears that somehow the audio device controller in my laptop is not recognized or its driver disabled, possibly by pulseaudio. Sound works fine in Windows 7 part of this dual-booted laptop.
I was having issues with the mic or line in on my onboard sound card, while trying to get my tvtuner patched in, later I gave OSS a try, I could not get it to work and decided to go back to Alsa, now my soundcard is not functioning.I have followed quite a few different guides, one of which is the sticky, please forgive me for not remembering which guides. I'm going nuts over this.As you can see below it looks like it is still using the oss driver.

I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.

Recently made a fresh install on Xubuntu, and for whatever reason, I'm getting no sound coming out when I just select USB audio.If I go into Sound Preferences, I can see the device. I can even select it for sound input. Hell, if I press some keys on the keyboard, I can see some of the squares on the input level go green.Evidently, there IS sound coming in via the USB connection, and Audacity is capable of recording it.
However, the only way of hearing it is by putting headphones directly into the unit and listening to the monitor output signal. The audio coming in, as detected, is not being played from my laptop speakers/headphones.Am I just missing something here, and that's MEANT to be the only way to hear the audio out?In alsamixer, there are no controls for the Xstation, and nothing seems to be muted. I've upgraded the firmware to the most recent version as well.
my computer is connected to my TV through HDMI using ATI HDMI output. I have written a small script to switch display from monitor to TV when a want to watch a DVD, but I didn't find how to switch sound from speakers to HDMI in command line. For the moment I have to open KDE system settings -> Multimedia and move sound devices by hand.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.
The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?
I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.
I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
My USB sound card used to work perfectly, but after i unplugged it, there seems to be a problem. When it is unplugged it is in the multimedia device preference list, but it is greyed out. When i plug the sound card in, nothing happens to the greyed entry, instead a new device shows up with the same name.
When press test on the new entry, it works fine, but it's like pulseaudio dosn't recognize the USB sound card, and the sound just comes out of the internal speakers. Also, if i move the new entry up in the list, it has none effect at all. Sound still comes out of the internal speaker. Does anyone know how i can fix this?
I have an external audio interface that is supported by alsa and works really well with ubuntu 10.04. The only problem is that on my studio monitors I can clearly hear that the sound from ubuntu is distorted, like there is too much gain somwhere. Since my audio interface (Lexicon Omega) has an output level knob on the interface, ALSA does not have a level slider (software) through any mixer (eg GNOME ALSA mixer).
In order to stop the distorting sound problem, ie the signal input to my external audio interface is too "hot" first install PulseAudio Volume Control (referred to as pavucontrol in repos) in PulseAudio Volume Control configuration tab, set "profile" of your external sound interface to "off" log out, and when you log in again your problem should be solved.
For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI used to watch and record TV in Vista and Win7 with a SAA7134 capture card, and all worked fine. Using TVTime in Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (no upgrade but fresh install, everything up-to-date), I get picture but no sound. Instead I get this error message when running TVTime from the terminal: Can't open device /dev/mixer, mixer volume and mute unavailable.Using lspci in terminal lists the card as following:

When I try to playback a sound file in aucadity just after having played one in rhythmbox or totem or vlc (or presumably any other media player), I get the following message :
"Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."
When I try again 2 or 3 seconds later, playback works fine. In fact if I wait 2 or 3 seconds after having stopped playback in rhythmbox or totem before starting playback in audacity, audacity doesn't give me the error message at all. Just wondering what causes this delay (as there are no delays when I go from rhythmbox to totem or vlc or anything else).
All my music editing software programs say, "unable to open device /dev/dsp.Device or resource busy." How can I fix this?

It all worked fine, but now, when the external hd isn't connected, I ge the message: error: no such device : ... grub rescue> the I put the ls command grub rescue> ls (hd0)(hdo,msdos3)(hd0,msdos)(hdmsdos1) Now I just want to get Vista working again, without having to connect the hd.
