Ubuntu :: Internal Speakers Stopped Working - How To Make It Work

Apr 26, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu on my Dell Studio 1749 laptop since I got it, around 8 months ago.I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.10 64-bit, reformatting and partitioning my hard drive in the process (got rid of windows since I never use it) and it was working perfectly until last Wednesday (22.4.2011). On Wednesday I unplugged my usb headset while in a Skype call to switch to the internal speakers and my computer freaked out, black-screened, and froze. When I rebooted, the internal speakers had stopped working completely, even though the sound works perfectly on both sets of headphones I have.

I've tried most of the fixes that have been presented in other threads and none of them are working, including rebooting the laptop with the headset in. I've tried that with both of my usb headsets, even though I dont like using the one that it froze on for the exact reason that any time I have audio playing with that headset and it gets unplugged, it black-screens and freezes my laptop. Actually audio doesnt even have to be playing, sometimes unplugging it even with nothing playing still freezes my laptop. It does it once in a while with my other usb headset, as well, but not every time or anything close to that often. One thread suggested that modifying /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by appending the following line to the file would work:

Code:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6

But that did nothing at all. Someone else said that they saved a copy of alsa-base.conf and replaced the whole thing with that line, so I did that, with no change. Then I purged alsamixer using

Code:

sudo apt-get purge alsa-base

and

Code:

sudo apt-get purge alsa-utils

Then I rebooted, and reinstalled them, which did not fix the issue. However, it did replace the alsa-base.conf file that I modified which shows me that it actually did purge it. (I was an idiot the first time I tried to purge it and only purged and reinstalled alsa-utils..xD So the file did not get replaced, which was when I realised my mistake) I have NOT modified the new file, although I did copy the contents to a text file in case I need to try that fix again.I should also mention that the speakers do work when first booting up Ubuntu to the log-in screen, both with and without headphones I ran the alsamixer diagnostic at the beginning of all this, here's the link: [URL] And then ran it again after purging and reinstalling alsamixer, here's the new link: [URL] I have tried messing with the settings, disabling the headset, setting the input and output manually to internal speakers while the headset is still plugged in, making sure with GNOME alsa-mixer that the speakers are not muted, rebooting with the headsets in and then unplugging them.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: (10.04 - 64 Bit) Isn't Using All Internal Speakers

May 3, 2010

Ubuntu (10.04 - 64 bit) isn't using all internal speakers. Only the right speaker is working, resulting in low volume. If I attach external speakers or headphones, everything is fine. I checked the Alsamixer, but there's nothing to unmute there that has any effect.

The sound settings shows Internal Audio and RV710/730, but if I switch to the latter I have no sound.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HP Pavilion DV5000 Internal Speakers Not Working?

Mar 20, 2010

yesterday i was on videos, and i had headphones plugged into the headphone socket on my laptop.i unplugged them a few times because they were needed elsewhere, but on the last time i unplugged them, the sound didn't return to the internal speakers. i plugged the headphones back in, and there was sound out of the headphones, but not speakers. i rebooted the laptop, still to find sound only out of the headphones. i then was very bad, and booted into wingdoze, and still sound only out of the headphones.
i've tried doing the muting channels in alsa-mixer as well. muting didn't work. i've also tried cleaning the headphone socket with ispopropyl alcohol too. and removing the bios battery and battery and ac adaptor... just incase it will do a reset of some description. no. still nothing.

[code]...

edit: the "mute" media button light appears to be lit, however pressing it only feeds a software into the computer, and doesn't turn the light off. i'll try playing around a bit more. edit: i just discovered that if you hold down the m key on alsamixer to mute/unmute the "external amplifier" channel, the light flashes! this is beginning to look promising. edit: if i unmute the external amplifier before i log out, it stays unmuted until i log back in again. what can i do to stop it from muting as soon as i log back in again?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Manually Unmuting Internal Speakers When Headphones Are Connected?

Feb 14, 2011

I was wondering whether there is a comfortable small program that lets me manually switch on/off both my internal lapotop speakers as well as external speakers (connected via headphone jack), and control their respective volumes.I had this problem of the headphone jack not muting my internal speakers (solved), which had me realize it would be nice to be able to manually control that, enabling me to use it as a kind of surround.

I'm rather new to Ubuntu (using 10.04.1), but if there's an easy way to control this via terminal, I'd be, of course, very interested in that as well.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ALC272 - Speakers Don't Work At All

Dec 26, 2010

I rebuild ALSA twice, got the latest stable version, installed the one from ubuntu-audio-dev, but nothing. The output from alsa-info.sh can be found here: [URL] I have this Toshiba and the sound device is just completely messed up and partly depends on if I have headphones plugged into the machine when booting it up: Then sometimes everything (Microphone, Headphone, Speakers) works fine. But other times the speakers do not work at all then only the headphones. If I have the headphone not plugged in than in 75% of cases (roughly) the speakers won't go mute when I plug the headphones in.

The microphone(s) is the biggest concern as I need the computer to use Skype. Obviously I would want the jack to work... They sometimes respond when booted, but other times not. They more often work when the microphone jack is plugged in, but fail after a little while, then sometimes they don't work at all. It frustrating, I have tried various models of the ALC272 driver, but none works for this machine.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Speakers / Earphones To Work With IDJC

Within IDJC, it will let me hear the output of the stream - but I can't hear the sound from any other application (Chrome, Movie Player, etc). IDJC works with JACK control. I'm pretty sure it's JACK control that's not letting me hear out of any other application. Any ideas to make it work?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Internal Microphone Doesn't Work In Cheese And Skype / Why Is So?

Jan 21, 2010

I am using UNR 9.10

Sound recording from build-in mic was fine in skype and cheese after i installed UNR in my Acer Aspire One 110L in early December last year.

But somehow, i just realized that my sound recording was not functioning when i use skype this morning.

(i don't know since when this problem occur as i never use skype and cheese in past few weeks and i did update a few time from synaptic and install ubuntu-boot kernel)

just now i remove ubuntu-boot and reinstall the 2.6.31-17-generic kernel and run

sudo dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio

but skype and cheese still does not record from build in microphone but only record from external microphone.

One weird thing is Sound recorder do record from both the build-in mic and external mic.

i tried "parec -r test.wav" and "parec -p test.wav" and it also record from both mic.

Anyone know how to configure my netbook so that the internal mic work on skype?

Hardware :: Internal Speakers Don't Mute On FSC Amilo Pro / Resolve This?

Feb 3, 2010

I'm using Linux Mint 8, kernel 2.6.31-12 (and I tried several other distributions and had the exact same problem) on my FSC Amilo Pro 3525, where I have Intel HDA (ICH7) and Realtek 883. My problem is that when I plug in my external speakers, they do not mute the internal ones.

I've searched and searched the forums and came up with a half-baked solution where in alsamixer I - almost - mute front, and bring master to maximum, and in that way I hear the internal speakers just a little.. and the external ones play at maybe 1/3 of their normal volume. Every time I reboot I have to do this again. I can't mute front entirely because then it mutes all sound.

I tried adding various options to alsa-conf, which seems to be a fairly often suggested solution, including the one where I identify the model of my notebook, and it did not help.

Now. When I tried to find the answer, I came across several tutorials that suggested adjusting options in volume control, etc, inlcuding jacksense, that I found I don't have listed.

Being pretty ignorant about Linux, I came to the conclusion that it might be Pulseaudio that's causing the problem. For instance, alsamixergui shows Pulseaudio as card. I did try preventing Pulseaudio from loading, did not help.

My specs are.
