Aug 1, 2011I'm having some trouble configuring my the sound on my laptop. I'm using Alsa. Playing sound is no problem, but when I plug my Koss headphones into the audio jack the laptop speakers continue playing and sound also comes out of my headphones. When I go to alsamixer from cli the sound card only shows 1 master channel so I can't mute the internal laptop speakers.
My specs are.

Crunchbang Statler openbox
Squeeze kernel
2.6.32-5-amd64
I would be okay with completely disabling the internal laptop speakers if that is the easiest solution.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Manually Unmuting Internal Speakers When Headphones Are Connected?
Feb 14, 2011I was wondering whether there is a comfortable small program that lets me manually switch on/off both my internal lapotop speakers as well as external speakers (connected via headphone jack), and control their respective volumes.I had this problem of the headphone jack not muting my internal speakers (solved), which had me realize it would be nice to be able to manually control that, enabling me to use it as a kind of surround.
I'm rather new to Ubuntu (using 10.04.1), but if there's an easy way to control this via terminal, I'd be, of course, very interested in that as well.
General :: Sound Heard In External Headphones / But Not In Internal Speakers Of Laptop

My problem is that I can not hear any sound from my laptop's internal speakers (that works f9 in windows--so no h/w probs!) but when I connect external headphones, everything is heard.I have tried several commands from various internet sources since past one week. I don't understand many of the commands that I have run, but that has somehow helped me to run media files and hear sound on HEADPHONES.

Feb 4, 2010so my problem is that i can't disable the speakers on my laptop when i plug in my headphones. in other words, i get sound from both the headphones and the speakers, when the expected behavior is to disable the speakers when headphones are plugged in, and enable the speakers when headphones are unplugged..
i've been looking around the forum and google, and i found a way to adjust the speaker and headphone volume manually in alsamixer. To adjust the headphone volume on alsamixer, i can raise or lower volume using the "Front" volume bar. To adjust the speaker volume, i raise or lower volume on the "Speaker" volume bar.
so, it's cool to know that i can do this manually, but i'm sure there's an option i can put in alsa-base.conf to automate this. i just can't seem to find that option...
anyway, i'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit...and here's my alsa-base.conf file

Debian Multimedia :: Intel HD Audio - Headphones/Speakers Level ?
Mar 20, 2011This is a Lenovo L512 laptop with Intel HD Audio (Realtek ALC269 / Intel G45 DEVIBX) which was recently upgraded to Squeeze. I've been having trouble using the headphones on this machine, as the speakers continued to play while the headphones were connected. I normally use KDE, and the available mixer only offers one channel. I thought I might be able to manually silence the speakers by using the command line tool alsamixer. Unfortunately, alsamixer has a channel for the headphones, but it doesn't do anything, only master volume is controllable. By luck I decided to play around with Gnome today and to my great surprise, System -> Preferences -> Sound offers complete control over all functions of the audio hardware. Does anyone know how I could get these features working under KDE?

Fedora Installation :: No Sound From Speakers But Headphones Work
Feb 1, 2011I'm running FC 14 on an Alienware m15x-R1. It's an older one that they made before Dell bought them out. My problem is that the internal speakers don't work, but if I plug a headset in to the audio jack, it works fine. lspci tells me I have an audio device Intel Corp HD Audio Controller, which may or may not be helpful. I booted it up with an Ubuntu live CD just to make sure it was the hardware, and I get the same results.

Apr 26, 2011I've been running Ubuntu on my Dell Studio 1749 laptop since I got it, around 8 months ago.I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.10 64-bit, reformatting and partitioning my hard drive in the process (got rid of windows since I never use it) and it was working perfectly until last Wednesday (22.4.2011). On Wednesday I unplugged my usb headset while in a Skype call to switch to the internal speakers and my computer freaked out, black-screened, and froze. When I rebooted, the internal speakers had stopped working completely, even though the sound works perfectly on both sets of headphones I have.
I've tried most of the fixes that have been presented in other threads and none of them are working, including rebooting the laptop with the headset in. I've tried that with both of my usb headsets, even though I don�t like using the one that it froze on for the exact reason that any time I have audio playing with that headset and it gets unplugged, it black-screens and freezes my laptop. Actually audio doesn�t even have to be playing, sometimes unplugging it even with nothing playing still freezes my laptop. It does it once in a while with my other usb headset, as well, but not every time or anything close to that often.One thread suggested that modifying /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by appending the following line to the file would work:

But that did nothing at all. Someone else said that they saved a copy of alsa-base.conf and replaced the whole thing with that line, so I did that, with no change. Then I purged alsamixer using

Then I rebooted, and reinstalled them, which did not fix the issue. However, it did replace the alsa-base.conf file that I modified which shows me that it actually did purge it. (I was an idiot the first time I tried to purge it and only purged and reinstalled alsa-utils..xD So the file did not get replaced, which was when I realised my mistake) I have NOT modified the new file, although I did copy the contents to a text file in case I need to try that fix again.I should also mention that the speakers do work when first booting up Ubuntu to the log-in screen, both with and without headphones I ran the alsamixer diagnostic at the beginning of all this, here's the link: [URL] And then ran it again after purging and reinstalling alsamixer, here's the new link: [URL] I have tried messing with the settings, disabling the headset, setting the input and output manually to internal speakers while the headset is still plugged in, making sure with GNOME alsa-mixer that the speakers are not muted, rebooting with the headsets in and then unplugging them.

Apr 27, 2011I have a problem with my sound card Microphone is working, headphones work but with kind of a low audio output, laptop speakers do not work at all. I have checked alsamixer and pulseaudio nothing is muted, tried all sort of different combinations and pulseaudio actually sees that mplayer for example is playing music, or skype is in videocall and using the sound device, but nothing is coming out of the speakers.

Jul 24, 2009When my headphones are plugged in, I'd like the audio to cut out from the regular speakers. I am using pulseaudio if that helps. Everything else, audio-wise, is running fine.

Jul 17, 2010I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 3050 laptop with a Realtek HD sound card. When I plug headphones in, the sound comes out of the headphones AND the built-in speakers, instead of the speakers muting as they should.
This happens on both the live CD and the installed OS which i'm running. I've tried every fix I can find on the Internet, including a setting changed in the text-mode ALSA Mixer, installing a package from synaptic, and other fixes for older versions of Ubuntu that can't be done on 10.04.

Is there some command? I cant find anything related, because all I have sound is about people wanting the speakers turn off only when headphones connected, but this is running for me. I want speakers off, with or without headphones connected. But i want to be able to turn on the speakers if needed.

Jun 13, 2010I found a curious issue with my new Dell XPS 8100. On my old Inspiron, as soon as I plugged in the headphones they muted the speakers. That's how it should be, because you listen to headphones so you don't blast your music all over the room. But now, on the 8100, the speakers still blast even if the headphones are plugged in. Headphones Also work, so they're getting a clear signal. It's just simultaneously being played in the rear speakers too.

May 20, 2010Audo is working fine through the Internal laptop speakers. when i plug in my headphones, nothing happens, the audio continues to play through the speakers, and nothing comes from the headphones. ive tried changing up things in sound preferences and alsa-mixer, but nothing seems to be working.
Im 100% sure the head phone jack isn't broken, and the headphones aren't broken (they both work in windows just fine.) Im running 10.04, on an amd-64x HP-dv3.
