Ubuntu Security :: Crack Own Password With John The Ripper?
Apr 4, 2010
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to crack my own password with John the Ripper. I've been reading and working at this for a long time and I've not been able to crack my password. I've added a "test" account on my machine with the password "password": For my Unix Password:
Code:
mark@mark-laptop:~/John/john-1.7.3.4/run$ sudo ./unshadow /etc/passwd /etc/shadow > mypasswd
mark@mark-laptop:~/John/john-1.7.3.4/run$ sudo ./john mypasswd
No password hashes loaded
YES I have read the README and the FAQ and for this problem they give the following possible problems:
Q: Why doesn't John load my password file? It says "No password hashes

I am relatively new to Ubuntu and may have a security breech. I was recently looking over synaptics installed packages on my PC and noticed JOHN installed on my system. This was never installed by me nor do I think this entire APP is a dependency of something that may have been installed. My questions are... Has my system been compromised? I use an elaborate password as well as UFW.Can I determine who installed this package (i.e. local user account or remote user)? Can I determine when? The system was installed only 3 days ago.Can I determine if there have been any instances of a successful or failed remote connection to my PC?

In my Open-Suse server I have a script, where makepasswd output(by default it generates similar passwords: cGyTbqpr, tpJ1LA, 33EXdo) is redirected to mkpasswd(which uses DES by default) in order to generate salted hash of this previously generated password. I would like to test the strength of this system. I have a quad core CPU, and if I start John The Ripper like this(I want to use -incremental:all flag):
john -incremental:all passwd
..only one core is utilized at 100%. Is there a possibility to make all four cores to crack this password? Or is this possible only after reprogramming John The Ripper? Or what is the algorithm for generating passwords with with -incremental:all flag? I mean if John generates passwords randomly in brute-force mode, then it's smart to start four different John processes simultaneously because then one of those four will find the password firs

I've encrypted my root partition with LUKS and cannot remember my password. My main question is this: is it possible to extract the hash (or key; not sure on the correct terminology here) from the LUKS header and run it through a cracker? The hash type is SHA1 and I can remember the characters I used for the password, just not in the correct order (lots of special characters). That being said, given such a small charset, it should be crackable within a reasonable time, correct? Especially if I used a GPU accelerated cracker. What I don't know how to do is go about getting the hash from the LUKS header. Is any of this possible, or am I SOL? Of course, I have physical access to the system so I can boot it into any utilities I may need to.

I'm trying to crack a password on a pdf document. I have been using pdfcrack from the repositories but when I run the command pdfcrack -f filename I get the error: Encryption not detected (is the document password protected?)
I get the same error if I add the -o or -u option. Does anybody know how to do this? Strangely, I can get into the file just by opening it in foxit in Windows, but when I save it elsewhere it is still password protected, so I need the real password. (Can't print to pdf in foxit in Windows)

I'm using air-crack to crack into my network for fun. (It's WPA, NOT wep)
I've acquired a network handshake (I think, do I run
Code:
sudo airodump-ng --channel 11 --bssid 00:00:00:00:00:00 -w data mon0 and capture only four packets for WPA keys?)
After that, I need to run the command aircrack-ng -w wordlist capture_file (where wordlist is your dictionary file, and capture_file is a .cap file with a valid WPA handshake) My wordlist is in /home/steaksauce/Documents/Dictionaries/ and the particular file I want to use as a dictionary is lenth10.txt -- I downloaded a dictionary, and added my own passkey to it so I could have my fun

Is there a way to crack the windows Administrator password in Linux (using the SAM file) WITHOUT resetting it?
Ok so Ive already got Ubuntu 10.10 on a usb bootstick. Chntpw is installed as well. What I'm wondering is are there any programs to crack as in decrypt the SAM file and show the password but not erase it? Most Linux programs Ive come across don't do this. They just reset the password.

I know this has probably been asked too many times here but I need to secure my emails. Personal matters of course. But yeah. I use the program "Password and Encryption Keys" to generate a key to sign my emails with but I do not know what to do. To be blunt, I'm stupid when it comes to this. IF not, steps in creating a key? and giving it (my public key) to the significant other? Finding where both keys are? Implementing it into Thunderbird? If it helps any here's some extra information: Ubuntu distro: Ubuntu 10.04 Email client: Thunderbird

I already posted a topic similar to this concerning the Desktop OS version, but this deals with the Netbook because unlike the Desktop, the Netbook is less cooperative. Allow me to elaborate: Today (or rather yesterday since it's not after midnight where I am), I changed my password because I was hopelessly confounded about how to get my Wireless Network card up and running after it had been installed and I was allowing my dad to use it. This issue has since been resolved, however...
When I chose my password during the original installation, there was no mention of it being "too simple." This is where the Desktop OS and the Netbook OS differ. The desktop will let me change it in the terminal without any errors. The Netbook will not. When I've attempted to revert it back to the original, it will not let me do so in the User Profile or in the Terminal. The Passwords and Encryption Keys application also does not appear to help.
So now even after I've changed it to a different "complicated" password I am still prompted to insert two different passwords since I changed my user password but I am unable to change the password I input during the installation. A bit screwy methinks. This is extremely important. I'd like to know how to change the original installation password.
If I can't change the main password on my laptop then this is a serious potential security breach just waiting to happen (especially since it's on a laptop and I will be hauling it around with me) and I will most likely install a different OS if this isn't resolved --- It would be very unfortunate since I spent the whole day fixing it and I really enjoy the interface. Luckily I can live with this on my Desktop since I'm not going to be hauling it around with me everywhere when the school year starts.

I have a database created by an older program (not Access) that I need to open and retrieve information for my business. The manufacturer put a password on there so that only it's program could open it. I do not use that program, but it has information I need. Is there a way to find that password or circumvent the password altogether?

I'm trying to understand the entire method of cracking a wireless network using aircrack.I thought the idea is to collect a lot of encrypted packets, and then try to crack these using the fact that the IV's used to encrypt a packet are not always different from each other.ight?ck-ng to be able to crack a WPA with a pre-shared-key.But what is the point of using a dictionary? If you use that, why would you bother collecting packets? Using a dictionary is basically guessing the encryption-key isn't it?

Before anybody says it, no, I am not doing anything illegal. I have a problem. I have about 50 rar and zip files. Each of them are locked with one of four passwords. I know the passwords, but I don't know which password is for which archive. Since this is a repetitive task that I will have to do again in the future, I want to write a script (or find one) that will try each of the four passwords for all of the .rar or .zip files in a directory.
I believe the technical term for this is "dictionary attack" - however, my dictionary would only contain 4 words. I know some rudimentary Python. Would it be best to use Python for this or would Bash (which I don't know at all) be more suitable. Does anybody know of a script/app that already does this? I am not interested in bruteforce solutions.

I'm on 10.04. Every dvd ripper I've tried so far has failed in one or another. I have all restricted extras and medibuntu codecs installed.
DVD::Rip either throws an error message or stops ripping somewhere through the process
Handbrake only finds some of the dvd titles
OGM rip gives an "Unknown error"
Acidrip says "mencoder interrupted by user"

Started with a clean install, with new GeForce 6200 video card installed. Very impressed that when I tried to activate compiz, it informed me that I must download and install the relevant drivers - and it provided me with a 'one click' install! Now I'm running the latest driver (195) - well done guys!Anyway, happy as I am with a no-fuss install, I'd like to know what is everyones pick of CD ripper to MP3?
I've downloaded Asunder, but this seems very slow in comparison to other Windows-based apps I've tried.I wanted to try Sound Juicer, but unfortunately it requires some code to change from VBR to CBR @ 320kbps.

All I'd like to reliably do is rip a few audio CDs. SoundKonverter - doesn't work at all. Log tells me nothing SoundJuicer - OK for one disk. Usually crashes when the read disk is ejected and attempts are made to read the next. Failing that, it will read a few tracks and then lock up. K3B - Only rips first disk, then the progress window (form) locks up at 100%. Cancel button doesn't work. Need to kill task.
RipOff - works OK, but so slow... life's too short goobox - locks up before it even reads the disk and despite its claims I don't think it's a "rip" tool anyway.

I'm trying to install Rubyripper into Maverick using these guidelines: [URL]
But I get this error message in terminal:
Code:

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/aheck/ppa/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Presumably because it can't find the package. But what do I do next? or is there an alternative way to install?

The subject of this post is actually a question e.g. is there a mp3 ripper that allows the bitrate to be modified. I have looked at cdparanioa, which I believe is the foundation of most of the Linux rippers, but it does not allow modification of the bitrate. I realise I could ripper in flacc format but I have an mp3 player as does my grandaughter so I need the mp3 format. Incidentally is there a player(portable) that will play flacc encoded files?

I'm looking for the best way to pull some video files off of DVDs onto the desktop. These are not copyright protected. I don't want a program that plays the movie and then make a duplicate like most windows programs these are TOO slow. Also if I could shrink and change the format that would be a huge bonus.

I'm vaguely remembering a video stream ripper that was open source and could be compiled for linux, mac, and windows. It's name ended with ++ and I can't remember anything else Basically, it was like StreamTransport but open source and multiprotocol capable. Can anybody help me find it again? I'd be open to alternatives too of course! My basic need is to rip anything being rendered by my video card.
