After a lengthy session with lots of programs and windows open, hitting the shutdown or restart or logout buttons don't produce anything at all. Suspend works. Sudo shutdown -h now in a terminal window works. Why the graphical ways of shutting down don't work?

CentOS 5 :: Graphical Desktop Won't Load?
Jan 29, 2010I installed CentOS with KDE and Gnome. the computer starts with a console instead of a window manager. When I try to start Gnome (using either startx or gdm), it freezes the whole computer. I can't even get to another command prompt using Control+Alt+F2, when I try to start Gnome.
After rebooting I tried starting KDE using the kdm command, but it prints out some error messages and logs me out of my session. (I've never seen a program force a log out of a session before! I thought that was strange.) I tried to record the errors by using the command "kdm > errors.log" and "kdm >> errors.log", but nothing is written to the errors.log file.
Also, under the (likely?) case that this problem is caused by the graphics card, I ran lspci and discovered that this computer contains this graphics card: VGA Compatible Controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)

Also I have this problem that my resolution is too high. so fonts are to small i cannot spend time in linux because my eyes start hurting. I use GNOMEThere are resolutions like 1280 x 960 next is 1440 x 900 1440x900 is sutable for my form of monitor.But 1280 960 is for more square like monitore so if i choose this resolution it looks bad. if i choose 1440 its too little. As it is max resolution for my monitor.In windows i use resolution 1280 x 768 how can i setup that in linux. Also in driver or something it says Ati 3600 series. But i have Ati radeon HD 3730 when i try to choose different versions of ... it says cannot start x server.

Sep 19, 2010I'm trying to switch from debian to fedora (13) and I'm stuck at getting yum to remove leave dependencies.
So far I've installed "yum-plugin-remove-with-leaves" and I'm able to remove leave dependencies if I invoke yum with the "--remove-leaves" argument from command line.
But this doesn't work with graphical front ends and I want to remove unused leave dependencies every time if I remove a package not just if I remember to invoke yum with the "--remove-leaves" argument.
Later on I discovered an option in "/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/remove-with-leaves.conf" named "remove_always = 1" and uncommented it. But yum doesn't seem to care. I still need to add the "--remove-leaves" argument otherwise yum isn't going to remove the leave dependencies.
How to configure yum to handle dependencies the way I used to know from apt under debian? Install a package with a graphical front end and dependencies get pulled in as needed. Uninstall a package later on and dependencies installed in the first place are removed as well if not needed by anything installed in between.
Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot Centos 6 & 15 Does Not Work?
Aug 16, 2011have a problem with my latest install as follows:1) If I install Fedora 15 so its bootloader is in the MBR (/dev/sdc1) and Centos 6's bootloader into the first sector of the boot partition (/dev/sdc3) I have no problem chainloading from Fedora 15 into Centos6 with the following in Fedora's grub.conf. This has always been the way I have set up multiple OS's (I like the chainloader method).

Mar 3, 2009I'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I am not sure if it's relevant, but my application starts before the SSH daemon.My script looked like:

Ubuntu Installation :: Graphical Glitch And Freezing On 10.10
Apr 16, 2011I've been having trouble trying to install ubuntu (and mint linux too) - I have the same problem with either version.
It's an Acer T180 tower PC, when I come to install it'll go through the motions of setting up the drive, copying files and then downloading/installing language packs. Randomly though between copying files and downloading/installing language packs it will just sit there and freeze. Sometimes it will just freeze and stay on the same image, other times it will freeze and what's best described as a window blinds effect will go across the whole screen. Either way the PC stops responding.
I've tried multiple downloads of iso files (ubuntu and then mint) - running on usb and also running from cd and dvd - same issue each time. I've made sure that the username is lowercase too (just in case).
The other thing I've tried is removing the separate nvidia graphics card and using just the internal one (again an nvidia card). Ubuntu will prompt that there are restricted drivers available - doesn't matter whether I install them or not - it still freezes just the same.
Ubuntu Installation :: Graphical Bug After Hibernation / Restart
May 22, 2011since my update to version 11.04, I am experiencing a bug when using hibernation and restarting afterwards. When starting up the hibernated system, everything is normal until the end of the boot manager. Afterwards, (once there is something on the screen again, as it does switch to black afterwards), I am able to see only about 1/5th of my screen clearly. The left 4/5th of my screen are displayed as pure black with scrambled colored pixels at the upper 2 centimeters of the black area. The only thing that is displayed as it should in that area is my mouse pointer.
It is possible with some luck to log in from this screen (the luck is needed to find the correct place to click on to change from user selection to the PW field, where I can use the mouse pointer to find the PW field as it changes for text editing about the field, as it is expected to.)The funny thing is that you can catch small glimpses of what the screen actually looks like if there are bigger screen changes (during log on, when moving the mouse around and hovering buttons by chance, when using <Super> + 'e' to change the currently viewed desktop or when switching windows via alt + tab, ...), as then the screen flickers and shows for a fraction of a second what would normally be shown all the time.Any ideas how to solve this without having to downgrade? Any additional details I could give you to help finding the source of the problem?
I'm using an asus eee pc 1005ha, BTW. It was originally shipped with windows. And I am using the normal release of ubuntu instead of the netbook release as I did't like the look and feel of that version, when I first saw its default look on the netbook of a friend of mine. Also I am logging on to the classic view as I didn't like the changes of v11.04 either as there was no possibility to configure them properly to fit my needs.

I guess that with the first option, it's like in Wheezy - it installs the default, which is gnome. But if i choose the ...xfce option, do i have to keep the 'debian desktop environment' option checked, or will that just install gnome alongside Xfce? Do i have to check only Xfce as an option?

Aug 28, 2011I am trying to install Squeeze (Debian 6.0.2), KDE environment, desktop PC, older 32-bit single CPU, 40 GB hard drive wholedisk, 2 GB RAM). I am trying to install an encrypted hard drive (takeover installation using entire hard drive).

It contains video controller hardware information. (In that thread I mentioned a desktop and a laptop; I am currently trying to install Squeeze on the desktop PC, not the laptop!)
It seems I will need to request using apt in the shell the Squeeze package firmware-linux-nonfree. I am not familiar with configuring apt from the command line. Can anyone just tell me what I need? (I have many other things I am trying to learn today, so RTFM would not be helpful in this instance.) I am hoping apt will be autoconfigured well enough to get the deb if I simply give the command. Would it be

I want to ensure before trying to get apt to install debs over the internet that the key-signing and package verification is working. I hope that all is done automatically by the installer, but does anyone know with certainty? I stress that (as I understand things) checking the GPG signature of a signed deb is different from and complementary with checking the integrity hash; both verifications are crucially important. The reason I ask is that at least under oldstable (Lenny) there was a separate debsig package, which seems to imply that apt does not automatically acquire the ability to check the GPG signature of signed debs.
Someone said that in addition to non-free drivers I might need to obtain firmware. I have never been able to do this successfully, probably because hardware sites assume Windows users and I don't use Windows at all.

Jan 29, 2010I want to switch to Ubuntu 9.10 but the computer always freezes 30 to 45 seconds after entering the graphical mode. This includes the 64bit installer, the 64bit live CD version and I even installed the 32bit version with the alternate install CD (text-mode). In all 3, I can use the system (e.g. log in, click Next) just fine for half a minute, then it crashes. It even crashes if I don't do anything.
Here are my hardware specs:
MB: Biostar TF560 A2+
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+
RAM: DDR2 800 Dual 128 bit, 2T (4GB)
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 3870
The sound and network cards are integrated but I've tried disabling them from BIOS as well as removing all hard drives and the problem persists. I have also verified the CD successfully. Note that right now I'm using SLAX from a CD as I formatted my hard drive (so at least some Linux works).
Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid 10.04 - Freeze On Graphical
May 23, 2010After running 9.10 (Kubuntu) uneventfully on my Thinkpad x100e (chip: AMD Neo MV-40, graphics: Radeon HD 3200), I upgraded to Lucid and am getting a system freeze/hang.
I'm running the Xorg radeon driver.
At first the freeze was on the KDM login screen, right after the audio drumbeats. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest from Lenovo, and now I can log in, but it freezes right away while trying to build the desktop. I've tried the failsafe graphical boot, and all I get is a black screen.
I've seen some threads related to the i845/i855 chips, but that shouldn't be an issue here (although I tried some of the workarounds which didn't help). I'd like to avoid the fglrx driver if I can, but I'll give that a shot if I can't get past this.

Aug 16, 2010I have successfully installed ns-2.29 on ubuntu and even patched in mannasim. the "make file" of ns2 is sucessful as well. The problem arises, whenever i try to run a tcl file.. eg: example1.tcl it gives an error regarding nam. I have installed nam-1.11 and configured it too. It is however unable to open the graphical window. Moreover, no trace files are created, nor any output is found in "nam.out"

Jan 6, 2011early tl;dr: The fancy grub breaks on my wubi 10.04 install, can I force it to use the old grub?
When I rebuild grub.cfg (last time was yesterday for kernel update to .37), and shut down / reboot, grub breaks because it can't 'loadfont' and a few other errors which are related to the 'graphical' grub boot menu.
To fix this I have to boot into a live CD (also Ubuntu 10.04) and run the following:
