Slackware :: Corrupted Graphics In TightVNC After Upgrading To Slack-13.0?
Nov 13, 2010
I've recently upgraded from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 13.0 and so far everything works fine with one exception: the TightVNC package that comes with Slackware-13.0 (in /extra) produces a garbled desktop. Applications look fine, but the default desktop of 13.0 is corrupted. Restarting the VNC server doesn't solve the problem. Before the upgrade, I had 1.3.9 compiled from source. I have just installed the 1.3.10 package that came with Slack-13.0 on top of what was there, hoping it would overwrite old files as needed (couldn't find an automatic uninstall procedure for 1.3.9).
I have attached a printscreen. Notice the taskbar and the top left quarter of the screen. Firefox seems to be rendered properly though. Has anyone encountered this before or may have a clue what could be causing it?

I have some doubts about the official Pat's upgrading procedure. In the UPGRADE.TXT file, one of the stepts says:
Code:
upgradepkg --install-new *.t?z What does --install-new mean? Pkgs I have no installed on my 13.1 will be installed on the 13.37 upgrade? For example, I did not installed KDE on 13.1. Will be installed when upgrade? - What about third party pkgs? Slacky, SlackBuilds.org, compiled by myself. Should I remove them before upgrading slack?

Have got slow bumpy - slow to load -slow to refresh graphics. Also noticed that when inittab 3 and doing a non graphical login for user startx wont work. Something about fbdev not loading.
logining in via kdm works for user. have tried placing an xorg.conf into /etc/X11 with what used to be ok for user to have dri.am using an radeon hd 2400 pcie graphic card. Also placed a file into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/100-dri.conf again with what used to work to get dri working. Is it me or is slackware graphics gone down hill since 13.0?

I am using nvidia fx 5500 graphic card and still have unresolved problems with graphic. At this moment I cannot set X window system to work properly. My first attempt after installing slack -current was to install nvidia's 'blob' driver. As it is know 'blob' conflicts with 'noveau' open source driver for nvidia cards. 'Blob' cannot install with noveau running. Thus I blacklisted 'noveau' and installed the 'blob'. After I restarted the computer it seemed it is Ok, but 1) it is really very hard to set the proper value of gamma correction, contrast and brightnest, 2) after logout the X server didn't restart and computer was 'dumb'.
I have some prerequisites to suspect the 'nv' X.org native driver for bugs, but I tested and driver is ok, however it is impossible to work wit this driver, it can only accomplish 60 Hz V. refresh,
[Code]...
Additionally: in fact I have to graphic devices - nvidia on AGP and VIA graphic onboard card (VT1344). BIOS points to AGP as primary graphic device.

I've upgraded Slackware-13.1 I had installed to Slackware-Current using a local tree I had download with mirror-slackware-current.sh script, but when I rebooted I could not get the graphics to load. I think it's because I've also modified /etc/groups and add an username after audio: and video: group, but I forgot that and had to remove slackware from the machine.

I just upgraded from 13.1 to 13.37 and I'm getting the L 02 02 02 error. This means that lilo can't find the partition it's told to boot. It's strange because:
- I haven't tweaked anything in the hardware
- I kept the same partitions, just formated
- I'm using ext3, as with 13.1
- I installed lilo on MBR (while on setup, and later with -M /dev/sda)
- I choose the huge smp kernel, as with 13.1
- I have only two partitions, root (sda1) and swap (sda2)
- the root partition is the active one (asterisk), on fdisk
So I tried:
- reseting the BIOS
- removing the UTF8 setting on lilo.conf
- using the lilo.conf that worked with 13.1
They all failed. I don't even know what to try!
PS: The hardware is a Pentium 4 1500Mhz with 512MB RAM on Asus P4B.

I know I said I wouldn't do anything that could possibly do anything bad to the drive until I receive my external hard drive. I just didn't expect that upgrading from 11.2 to 11.3 via zypper dup has the potential to do that.
First, the problem: The most important partition of my computer containing all the irreplaceable stuff (images) which I had apparently only partially backed up was corrupted after I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3.
On my computer, there are 2 drives. sda was the one that had Windows. sdb had an NTFS partition and a few smaller partitions which I used for openSUSE. After doing quite a bit of searching on upgrades corrupting partitions, I didn't find anything about it doing what I feared which was corrupting the NTFS so I went ahead and upgraded.
The upgrade went along smoothly. No problems that I could tell. The only weird thing was that the window borders disappeared near the end but I assumed that was supposed to happen. And then I restarted. First thing I noticed was that the background was blue instead of the image I had set (which happened to be on the NTFS partition). I didn't think much of it at the time figuring it was just a quirk in the upgrade process. I went ahead and decided to reset the background to what it was. And then I realized that the NTFS partition was missing -- it wasn't mounted or visible at all. That was when I started to panic a bit.
I opened up Yast partitioner and everything looked fine except that NTFS partition in question had a little * by it. I went ahead and reset its mount point only to receive an error saying that the filesystem in question doesn't exist. And sda became sdb and sdb became sda if that changes anything.
I went into Windows expecting for it to do a CHKDISK on bootup for the drive (D: ) but none of that happened. Hoping that everything was fine, I went in and tried to access it only be given an error along the lines of "The drive in D: is not formatted. Do you want to format it?" Of course, I said no but that was when I realized that this was no partition table problem like last time.
I tried restarting but Windows froze and refused to do so for several minutes so forced the computer to shutdown and loaded my copy of GParted LiveCD. It showed a 30GB unrecognized partition, another 30MB one and some unallocated space. TestDisk fixed that. (so it turns out, there was a partition table issue) What was left was what looked OK except the one partition on sda (the original sdb) that I could not afford to lose had an error.
I can't remember the exact error but it said something like "Are you trying to use a disk as a partition? Are you trying to use /dev/sda as /dev/sda1 or vice versa?" That was either in the error message or in the message I got when I tried to check the disk.
Still trying to get Windows to check the disk, I tried booting from the new sda into Windows. What I got was the Dell Utility program. It said no mouse detected and I couldn't do anything so I shut it down.
I tried going back into Windows the normal way and got the Dell Utility. I figured that this was an MBR problem after I went back into openSUSE with the new sdb still reading perfectly. Although I couldn't manage to restore the MBR so I can't log into Windows. But the other issue is far more important.

I just installed 11.3 RC1, but I can only run in failsafe mode. Installation went fine and I'm not having any problems except that when my computer gets ready to launch my login screen it just display garbled graphics. I have tried multiple resolutions and the x11failsafe option, all with a no-go. I did see this error message pop up at the time of garbled graphics on one login: [GPU LOCKUP, switching to software fbcom]

Once I launch google chrome
14.0.792.0 (Developer Build 88942 Linux) Ubuntu
(problem happens across various chrome versions and firefox too)
and I visit a site with graphics, still image or ....., I get a screen overlay of the website image positioned near top left of my monitor which overlays its graphics on top of windows of other applications. Interestingly, when I kill chrome the image disappears, then reappears on re-launch of chrome. Somehow chrome is controlling the rendering of its video memory, from killed tabs, outside of its own window.
This I have seen for firefox as well. Its been happening for few months, not on every browser launch but daily nonetheless. The video corruption also prevents mouse cursor cut N paste of text on any application which happens to have its window overlayed in this manner.
I have all the latest updates
ubuntu 11.04
nvidia driver 270.41.19
screen captures of offending overlay do not show up, though I could photograph my screen if need be. Have stopped using beta chrome daily builds, now using default google chrome to verify whether symptoms disappear.
I see no apparent errors in system log or X server log

I am trying to get TightVNC to work on my laptop running slackware 13.1 32Bit but I am having a problem. Basically, tightvnc starts correctly, but when I login with the vncviewer from a remote machine, I see this error message on the virtual desktop:
Code:
Unable to contact settings server. Did not receive a reply.Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. Then I click "Close" and another error message appears:

My friend has a HP Pavilion dv2699ea (dv2500 series - somehow *shrugs*) that has stopped working. It's a Core2Duo laptop with a Nvidia GPU. The unit is no longer under warranty. Problems first started a few days ago with the laptop showing corrupted graphics in Windows and BSOD'ing after a few minutes of use. I tried booting to an Ubuntu LiveCD which worked for a while before succuming and crashing as well. The freezing/graphics corruption/BSODing does seem somewhat heat related (CPU runs at ~95'c under load) however I believe that if it is heat related, then it's already damaged components inside.
Now the system has corrupted graphics on bootup[1], including booting Ubuntu[2], and neither operating systems will boot at all (Windows can sometimes get logged in before showing a black screen and becoming unresponsive. Ubuntu just looks like [3] after X starts). (See comment below for links.)
The fact the problem occurs both under Linux and Windows says to me this is not a driver issue. I have run Memtest which passed fine and none of this seems HDD related as I managed to get ~30GB of data off the system before it finally gave up the ghost.
She has been using it repeatedly without giving it adequate ventilation for years (i.e. on the bed, or on a pillow), so it's my opinion that the system board has probably warped over years of cooling/heating and that's causing this current problem. If that is the case, then I can buy a replacement system board and fit it myself, saving about £200 over the cost of an out-of-warranty HP repair. Of course, I don't want to make her spend £100 on a replacement part for it to be the wrong thing, hence asking for a second opinion here!
Hopefully I've covered all the bases here. I'm a former IT support guy myself, so I've tried all the dumb stuff (driver updates, examining memory dumps from BSODs [one 'unrecoverable hardware error', three relating to the graphics card], etc).

When I try to put slackware to sleep or have it hibernate the system simply sits with a black screen. Normally it would do this for a short period of time immediately before the actual sleep state (screen powered off, croissant light on) is entered, but currently it does it indefinitely. My sleep USED to work just fine, it broke after some unclean shutdown or another, basically I just want to know what I can try resetting to try to get it back to normal.
Slackware64 13.1, running on thinkpad X61.
EDIT: Of course the second I make the post I think of trying to sleep/hibernate from the command line instead of through X/GDM (Gnome SlackBuild). That works.

Has anyone here succeeded in getting armed slack running on a consumer kirkwood device .ie. one without serial console? I have a tonido plug that I want to liberate. By default the plug boots first from the external usb, so I would only need to set up / on the first partition. I would be very interested to know if someone had managed to install slack to the internal nand without bricking it.

my problem, I have Slackware 13 dual booted with vista on a dell 1545 2 ghz 2gig ram. to these forums I have gotten everything working except my creative zen vision M 30g. I have tried alll the suggestions posted here and other places on the net. Here is my output from lsusb.

any way i can transfer files back and forth to this would be great since it does not work in vista either. and I am pretty sure 99.9% that I have all the libmtp, libnjb, and whatever other libs are needed installed but in gnomad it says no devices found on USB hub. I hope this is enough info and someone out there has the trick or maybe I am missing something obvious.

I installed slackware on my laptop last night, :-) very happy. Can't wait to learn more about linux and even computers in general. I've already learnt heaps since entering the alternative operating system world. Anyways, i've got xfce up and running with slack now, created a new user 4 my self. And now i'd like to get some updates and stuff, but i need to use my mobile broadband. It's a telsta dongle If that changes the circumstances. How would i go about setting this up?
