Ubuntu :: Lucid Keeps Losing Graphics Driver?
Jun 4, 2010
I'm having a weird problem with Lucid: whenever I boot my system, it seems to forget there's a graphics driver. The result is that windows don't have title bars, and anything involving fancy graphics is turned off. When I go to the "appearance" settings, I can go to "visual effects", select "normal", and the machine starts looking for a driver, which is found After that shading effects are once again on, but the windows still don't have title bars If I then start the Compiz settings manager, that window and any window that appears thereafter does have a title bar. That way my desktop configuration is pretty much how I want it. The problem is that after starting up again, all the wonkiness is back.

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

I've tried various searches and haven't found anything quite matching this. Please forgive me if I am repeating though. I upgraded my Dell D600 (ATI Mobility Radeon 9000) from Karmic to Lucid. On Karmic, all 3D effects (Expo, Rotating Cube, etc.) worked fine. On Lucid, all still work but, once once enabled, the 3D effect is very dim - almost as if the backlight on the effect itself is turned off (i.e., when rotating the cube, the cube is dark but the background Skydome is illuminated). Once the effect is over, normal illumination returns. Running Karmic from the live disk and the effects are fine again. A buddy upgraded his D610 (next ATI in the line) and does not have the same issue.

This started yesterday.I have been running Lucid since the Beta release with no problems. Yesterday, I found about 20 or so updates ready for 10.04. I looked them over, mostly lib files, so I decided to go ahead and let them update. That evening I rebooted my machine before I left for the night, and it came up with the error "Ubuntu is running in Low Graphics Mode". In a word X is totally hosed. The display is cut just left of center, with part of the windows on the right carrying off the screen to come back onto the screen to the left.
I thought maybe Xconf might have been messed up, but not sure how. The updates I applied did not do anything to Xorg; and my understanding was that I didn't need that file because I am running with an Nvidia card. I tried to "reconfigure" the X settings from the error message, that did not work. I logged into a text only terminal, and copied a good backup of Xorg.conf back into place and rebooted. Same thing, still running in Low Graphics mode.

I just installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx and have a serious graphics problem. I've attached a picture to show the problem.
Some Background:
Pentium 4 3.06GHz
1.5GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600
I installed via liveUSB but had to choose the "nomodeset" option by pressing F6. Otherwise after the Ubuntu boot screen the graphics went like that in the attached image. The installation went fine (took less than 15 minutes!) but after the reboot the graphics problem returned. I can't see anything and the system is useless this way. I can't post up any logs (I'm typing this from the liveUSB).

I am running Wubi 64 bit Lucid on a Toshiba Satellite A215 S7422. In Karmic I was able to use desktop effects on max, with cube desktops and all the bells. I can no longer enable them, and after running Compiz-check I received a fail on "Checking for hardware/setup problems." The given reason was "Software Razterizer in use." Any idea what the rasterizer is/does? Would disabling it affect any other processes?
PS: If anyone can link to an article explaining how to switch from W7 Bootloader to Grub 2 (Which I already have installed)

I honestly have no clue how this happened, but compiz now refuses to start. I discovered that somehow GLX had been uninstalled and replaced by SWX (the software rasterizer - this gives Brian Paul as the OpenGL/GLX server vendor strings). Reinstalled GLX, currently have Direct Rendering and the proper vendor strings (SGI and Tungsten, I believe).Still nothing. OpenGL seems to be working fine, as Nexuiz runs pretty well.I tried running compiz --replace from the terminal to get any errors, but it just spits out "Falling back to default window manager", without so much as a hex code to tell me why--------Update---------Ran compiz --debug --replace to see if I could get anything else. It gives the following:Quote:taintsauce@the-****ing-fury:~$ compiz --replace --debugcompiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file /home/taintsauce/.compiz/plugins/libcore.so : No such file or directorycompiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file /usr/lib/c

Last month I installed a newer MoBo + CPU and PSU, (See system specs in my signature) and moved from Maverick to Lucid 10.04.
I was running Natty 11.04 64bit up until a couple of days ago, but that was locking up like mad. I did a fresh install of 10.04 over the whole HDD yesterday...though cannot recall it asking me if I wanted 32 or 64bit...will neeed to check)
I'm using an ATI Radeon (Sapphire?) x1650 PRO graphics card - but borrowed from a friend as my previous card wouldn't fit in the upgrade motherboard. Ubuntu is running quite fast with it but often stutters when on Firefox or Chrome. With Natty the system would lock up at least once an hour, with Lucid - at the moment it's only locked up once in 6 hours... I'm assuming this is just problems with Ubuntu and not the card. I get no odd lines or color on the screen.
I'll need to give this card back at some point... I'm wondering if people could suggest other cards (Nvidia/ATI or other) that are known to work happily with Ubuntu 10.04. I've got a budget of around 40, but then I'm not gaming so guess shouldn't need anything too high spec. (My PSU has a PCI-E connector if needed...though doubt it will be!)

I have been unable to get the fancy purple bootsplash (plymouth) since I installed Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T43. The bootsplash would up when I had booted off of a Live CD, but all future instances post-install only shows the blinking terminal cursor, followed by the GNOME log in screen. This has occurred after upgrading from Karmic, and after attempting a fresh installation of Lucid. Here's what I've tried so far without success:
comment out "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" in the grub file tried running echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash update-initramfs -u under su but it did not work because my conf.d directory doesn't contain a file called "splash", but only one file called "resume". This fix was taken from [URL]..A Google search showed that a lot of users with this problem have NVIDIA cards; however I'm running ubuntu on a system with an ATI card.

I recently upgraded to Lucid and am having difficulty finding and installing the ATI graphics driver for my machine. When I open Administration > Hardware Drivers, the list is completely empty. I've searched the forums but haven't found a way to get the driver installed. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1200 series, and my computer is a Toshiba Satellite A215-S5818.

I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.

This post is basically an addendum to my other post located at this link: [URL]... The "new" video problem I'm having is that now I can't get the resolution back to the regular 1200x1600. So what I did is download the latest driver and the previous one to try as well. When I tried to install them it said I can't because I had an X server running. I ran an init 3 to change my run level and then did a >runlevel command, which reported "3 3". I'm assuming that confirms I am in fact running at level 3. I then ran the following command:
>sudo sh ./NVIDIA..yada yada yada (driver info) It tried to install it but said I'm STILL running an X server. What am I missing? Also, I did the init 3 command and confirmed it was "3 3" and then tried to run >startx from the command line. It said "fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again."

I've been loitering over my resolution and nvidia xserver settings for about 2 days now, fiddling with xorg.conf and breaking ubuntu in the process trying to get my resolution at it's native settings. I've searched through many forums and none of them have solved my problem. Its maximum resolution is 1360x768, which isn't enough. It should be 1440x900. I have tried adding custom modes to the xorg.conf file and it wouldn't work. I don't know what's going on. Also here is my xorg.conf since I saved the nvidia settings to it...

I own a computer with an ATi Radeon Xpress 200 integrated graphics chip (yes, I am aware of everything that entails). Anyway, I tried installing the proprietary ATi driver using this tutorial and now I can't get any 3D effects and Flash is even worse than before. [URL]. I have run an update and it came up with a long list of updates which I installed, but to no avail.
I'm aware all this was probably a mistake so can I ask for either:
a) how to reverse what I've done or
b) how to make the proprietary driver work for me (if possible)

i was trying to uninstall old nvidia driver and install new driver via terminal. i used these commands (sudo dpkg -p nvidia -173; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove) and then this is the one that froze up on me (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current)computer froze while installing the new driver. now i cant boot up ubuntu 11.04. i get the grub menu but cant boot OS. i cant get recovery mode to boot either. it stops after it reads my dvd drive. i dont remember exactly what i did to get this message but i got a message that says alloc magic is broken at 0xb7ce5c80. im assuming that i have no graphics card driver installed and this is why i cant boot. is there anyway to boot from a live cd and manually install the graphics card driver? im on a dual boot with win7 and upgraded from ubuntu 10.10 so i dont really want to do a clean install and have to install tons of software etc.
