Jan 4, 2011I am having trouble burning an iso disc image that I downloaded of the Windows Vista Recovery disc for a friend who cannot boot her computer anymore. I downloaded the iso disc image and it mounts on my computer just fine, so it should be able to be burned as the disc image to a CD no problem. However, each time I right click on the iso file, and go down to Write to Disc, and then the menu comes up and I make sure that the destination drive is my CD/DVD burner drive with a blank CD-R in the drive, it burns the disc, but it always ends up being a CD with the file of the iso on the disc...!! It doesn't burn the image, it burns a copy of the image as a file! I uninstalled the CD/DVD burning software that was on my computer and installed CD/DVD Creator instead from the Ubuntu Software Center.
I tried following the steps on [URL] which tells how to burn a disc image from an ISO file. I follow it exactly, but I still get the same results: I get a disc that is not the image, but has the image on the disc. Now, I can mount the image on the disc on my computer, but that won't do my friend any good who needs to BOOT off this disc to fix her computer running Windows Vista. But ever since I wiped out my computer and went Ubuntu, I haven't been able to write an iso disc image to a CD or DVD properly. Does it matter if it is a CD or a DVD that is used? Like, if I put a DVD in, would the disc iso image burn to the DVD rather than a CD because of the way the image was made? For some reason I never thought it mattered, but does it?

Dec 19, 2009I have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... ( crack crack crack... ).To see the partitions inside the "big" file, i have used fdisk -l, and damn there is only one partition, but how can i mount the content???
I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.

Apr 9, 2010Is anyone aware of a way (or a program I can use) to write to an existing ISO image?To set the scene I've used APTonCD to create an ISO with all the programs on I want so that the next time I install Linux Mint (or Ubuntu) I can just put in the CD & install a lot of programs in one go with Package Manager. Thats worked fine & I have the ISO ready for CD but I would like a way to change it a bit so that I can add some of my own custom setup scripts (stuff to set up user accounts & so on) then every thing I need is all on one CD / DVD

Dec 29, 2010Okay, so bear with me for the lack of detail, its 3:46am and I'm really a beginner at this. So here is my issue: I decided I wanted to try Linux, so i got a Disc Image of Opensuse 11.3. while burning this disc image to a DVD-R I had no issues. But after the Validation was done an error appeared stating the disc Image was not burnt due to some error (apologies for not paying too close attention here) although the entire burn completed without issue. So I closed it and figured I would try again with another Disk when i get one.
Well as it turns out I did burn the Disc Image, and decided to try the Install. I have previously installed Ubuntu a few times and figured it was just as easy.. so I restarted my computer and booted from the CD. went through the Installation up to the Partition part.. This kind of confused me at first but I eventually got that it wanted to shrink my existing windows partition in order to make room. so i went along with it and began the install. well about halfway through the installation error messages kept showing telling me there were missing Packs. after about 10 messages I aborted the install for fear of what would happen now i have a shrunken partition and i dont know how to fix or what to do. I would still like to install opensuse but i dont have anymore DVD-R's and my Flash drive is too small. I will try to provide any info i can upon request. Oh, I forgot to mention im Running windows 7. if that helps at all which I doubt it does. I can safely access windows, nothing happened to the information on my drive. Im just missing 50GB of space now.
General :: Ubuntu 10.10 Installation Disc Not Recognized By Apt-get Command?
Apr 1, 2011I am trying to install the Broadcom wireless driver BCM4311 on my Acer Extensa 5420. I have consulted several help forums and tried several suggested ways of doing it. They all seem to require using b43-fwcutter, and my Ubuntu 10.10 installation always refuses to fetch it from the installation disk. The most straight-forward approach I have tried is as follows:
1. From the console, I type: sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
2. The command works for a while, then responds by asking me put the disc labelled " Ubuntu 10.10_Maverick Meerkat_ - Release i386 (20101007)" into the CD-ROM drive and press ENTER.
3. I insert the installation disc containing the installation program that I downloaded from the Ubuntu web site into the drive and press ENTER, but just get the same request again.
The file on the installation disc is named "Ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso", and the disk does not have a label. I have tried renaming the installation file with the intention of burning a new disc that would be recognized, but the name being requested is not a valid file name for Windows (so I can't do it on a Windows machine), and it also seems to be inappropriate for Ubuntu (it has spaces and may be too long). I also tried keeping the same file name and burning a disc with the requested label, but the burning software would not accept such a long label.

I want to learn some details about linux booting, so I begin writing a small boot program myself. Yesterday, I was writing a small boot program and planned to use it boot a Bochs virtual machine. The boot program is written in assembly language and compiled with nasm.I use bxiamge.exe in Bochs and create an floppy image called boot.img and configure the Bochs virtual host to boot from this floppy image. My question is how to write the compiled boot.bin program into the floppy image(boot.img)?

Jan 1, 2011I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

Mar 10, 2010this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.

But it only writes the saved part when bash exits. Instead, I'd like to have bash write that file continuously as each command is entered (and maybe also do an fsync(2) to flush it to disk). That way I can see the command I crashed the box with Anyone know the magical incantation for that?
But there appears to be nothing that I can find there, in the man page, or other searches, that suggest it even can do continuous.
