Is it possible to convert a 2.1 channel mp3 or any video file to get a respective 5.1 file permanently so I could play them on external music system which is 5.1 speaker system. Any sites where i can usually songs n video with 5.1 channel.
View 2 RepliesI'm using Rhythmbox to manage my music collection. I have ripped my CDs into FLAC files. I'm using the Motorola Milestone (The Droid) as my music player and syncing it using Rhythmbox.
Now, when I transfer my music files from Rhythmbox to the Milestone, it automatically convert the FLAC files to MP3. But the conversion is set to 128Kps.
How do I change this default conversion rate? Or even, how do I change to another conversion format altogether?
I think that the biggest problem that I have had is that some of the music (and audio books) that I have gotten have not played on my walkman, or have not been able to be downloaded in to I-tunes.
First: I hate itunes... I only try to make it work because I love my wife. (and do not want her to hit me)
Second: I know that my Walkman has a very limited range of files that it can play, so I will need to convert some types of files.
But my basic questions:
* How can I figure out what format a file is in?
* Below that, how can I identify the singular characteristics of a file? (bit rate, and other formats...)
* Is there a best way to switch the formats or format options of these files. (I am currently using sox to do this, it seems to very complete)
Basically. I know nothing! The most that I do not know is that two files that as far as I can tell have the same formats, and should work the same never the less, one of them works, the other does not. I am looking to figure out a way to look at these files (maybe they are mislabeled) and figure out what their real format is (and a more complete format than just being MP3 or such) and then to be able to convert it in to a format that is able to be used by myself and/or my wife.
I use ubuntu lucid x86_64 with pulseaudio. There seems to be some issues with how the audio is sent to the sockets. When playing an MKV with surround sound "front" recieves none of the actors voices. it almost sounds like it is the rear sound. Centre/subwoofer sound works correctly. I also get a problem with headphones and front where I cannot mute front and allow only headphones instead I can just mute headphone socket. This is entirely confusing so I hope someone can help me in the right direction.
Hardware: Nvidia 7600 gfx P5QL-EM mobo with 8 channel surround sound audio and hdaudio/ac97 cable which is set to hdaudio on mine in both bios and physically connected cable.

I am Ubuntu user, having only recently left the stinking, bloated corpse that is Windows ($225 for an upgrade to Win7 is just obscene). I have a huge library of Mp3's, which I have managed to enable support for on Ubuntu, and have installed Amarok, as I didn't think much of rythmbox.
So far so good, but I still need a program to rip/convert the rest of my CD's, and to convert lossless files. I'm looking for a CD ripper with similar functionality to EAC (Exact Audio Copy). One aspect I am looking for is the ability to manually change the Mp3 encoder used by the program. I am partial to the lame 3.98 encoder, and would like to keep using it. If the program already uses this encoder (or a close version), then that's fine and no need for the ability to manually change the encoder.
My motherboard is Intel DG31PR with 5.1 Realtek HD on board sound card I can't find 5.1 options on sound preferences on ubuntu 10.10... how can i setup a 5.1 audio channel...?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIt seems that when I start up any video in VLC recently that it automatically opts for the left only audio channel. This means that I have to go into the audio options with every movie or show I watch and switch it to stereo mode. I was wondering if anyone knew a way to get VLC to automatically start up in stereo. The videos I have been watching have stereo audio so that is not the problem. I have worked though all of the advanced audio options and I haven't found a way to be able to set this up.

Or at least that's what I figured, when watching videos from ....., etc., the sound in the left channel turns into distorted high frequency noise, anyone had the same issue? Is there a fix for this? Sound in other applications works just fine.EDIT: Oh, and I'm using the proprietary flash plugin, has worked just fine on my Ubuntu Studio on the exact same computer.

I am attempting to connect a bluetooth headset to a Telex Intercom System. I can connect my bluetooth headset to Ubuntu and use the microphone and the speaker perfectly. There are no problems with the Line-In or the Line-Out.
Is there any way to connect the BT-Microphone to the Line-Out while connecting the Line-In to the BT-Speaker?
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx. I am using the laptop to play video files and view it on TV using HDMI output. No problems. Requirement: to play simultaneously a different media file and be able to listen through say headphone / laptop speakers. While a movie audio is only heard on TV, other audio is heard only on laptop speaker.

Pavucontrol allows me to adjust the output to this device, and even shows some signal when playing media. However, no output makes it to the headset/speaker jack of the USB device. There does not appear to be any issues with playing media to the internal sound card & speakers of the computer. I booted up a Live Ubuntu disk, the device was recognized, and output made it with no problem. This leads me to discount a hardware problem. I'm running Suse 11.4 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T420s.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI currently have my desktop setup with two displays, one of them being my living room tv that I run Boxee on. My problem is that all the audio runs through the same speakers preventing me from listening to music or gaming at the same time as when Boxee is in use.
I would like to know if it's possible to split the audio so that an application of my choosing only outputs sound through my headphones. I was thinking it would be possible with some of the controls in pulse, but if it is I cannot figure it out.

I don't get an option for HDMI. Here is the interesting part. The sounds work sometimes but not all the times. Most of the time the sound works on the OS default sounds but wont work for movies, streaming and music. I am running pulseaudio. I am new to setting this audio up. The headphones work fine.
have recently installed CentOS 5.6 Final on TWO DIFFERENT desktop PC's, and, on EITHER ONE, I can not get any sound output when using KMid to play a "standard .mid file (the file I am using to experiment with is "Canyon.mid", from the Windoze Media directory, a fairly standard midi audio file, I should think?!). I have normal audio output on both of these machines (.mp3 files, system sounds, etc.), so the specific sound cards are NOT the issue, here!I am thinking I must be missing something, as both of these PC's are completely different CPU types, etc. as well. The only significant similiarity in the two machines is the complete lack of MIDI audio output!And, yea, the soundcards are BOTH MPU-401 compatible, and they both have irq's assigned to this port (or, maybe just one has an irq assigned, I will have to double check...).

At the moment I have it playing through Analog Stereo Output. (See attached image)
The sound is mostly flawless and I haven't been having troubles with it.
But, because I play audio through my logitech speakers (2 speakers, 1 subwoofer) I should be able to get digital stereo sound shouldn't I?
From the drop down box of the attached image there are two options for Digital Stereo;
Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958
Digital Stereo IEC958 Output + Analog Stereo Input
None of them work for me. Even if I do a restart, I get no sound from Rhythmbox or Firefox.
I use the pulseaudio sound server and I have the PulseAudio device chooser installed. When I had the Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958 selected I used the Volume Meter playback to see if there was any sound coming through. Both left and right showed activity but nothing came through the speakers.
I am currently trying to start doing some screen casting and having a problem with audio recording in gtk-recordmydesktop. The problem is that I need to record both; my computers audio card output, and my mic input at the same time. As of now I am able to record one or the other.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a TV card connected to my Dish box, and I would like to use it on my computer. The tv card works fine, and the audio is connected to my line in. The audio card receives the audio signal, and I can set the volume and record it without any problem, but I can't get it to redirect to an output in order to hear the sound. I have been battling with this issue since a kernel update back when 11.2 was about to come out. Back then, the alsa mixer had an option called audio loop-back, which did the trick. Since I know I ca record the audio and play it back without any problem, is there an application that can do this automatically and simultaneously?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter some fudging around, I managed to get my 64-bit karmic install to output sound digitally to my amplifier. So far, so good. The amplifier indicates a sample rate of 44.1KHz, while it is capable of 48KHz (higher sample rate would be better, i assume). Also, more annoying, it indicates no signal when no applications are producing sounds, causing it to miss the first second of output when I unpause my music. Windows 7 outputs everything as 48KHz, apparently also outputting silence as the light doesn't blink when i pause a media player.
The question then being: How do I override the default sample rate of digital audio output (if this is even possible, googling suggested that this might be overridden by applications); How do I make my sound driver output silence when no application is outputting sound.

For X-Mas I got myself a nice little nettop running off an ION motherboard. how to enable HDMI audio output, but got it to work. I've realized that when I'm in XBMC (which is admittedly the only place I watch movies) certain sounds like gunshots will be extremely louder than something like dialog. My friend believes that I should mess around with the channels (to fake the center channel from the left and right) I don't want to threaten Linux, how lightweight I can make it which is critical to an HTPC, but considering XBMC just got a Netflix addon
