I want to watch some live streaming TV channels on my laptop which has slackware installed.
For instance, I try this page: >click<
But I get this error:
The Totem Plugin could not be started. Failed to create a GStreamer play object. Please check your GStreamer installation.
Slackware is fully updated.
EDIT: I have also installed the latest version of GStreamer from source, and 3 plugins.

Guetting radio streams to work in ubuntu stand alone players wasnt so difficult after all: I just had too see the page source and locate the streaming address. That way I added some radios I was interested to rhythmbox. I also found websites that list lots of streaming addresses for Europe, Japan.TV seems to be different: so far I havent been able to do the same: Ideally, I could search for a streaming tv address in the source of the page with the embedded player, but no luck at all.
Im not talking about tv via a tvturner card, just tv streamings, like the BBC or this german one URL... type=null. The public german broadcaster allows me to watch their programms in their embedded player. Can I watch those programms in vlc or in other standalone players? Im also interested in the same for the bbc, cnn, aljazeera...

I'm not sure this is, strictly speaking, an Ubuntu problem (although it may be), but people around here seem to be more knowledgeable than they are anywhere else, so it's worth a try.
CNN recently started offering its news station on live streaming video for those who get CNN from a participating cable provider. For better or worse, I get CNN on Comcast, so no problem there.
Except for lagging video because lack of processing speed, it all works fine on my netbook, on which I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed.
But on my desktop, where I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, no such luck. The problem is the same regardless of whether I'm using Opera, Firefox or Chrome.
I can go to http://cnn.com/video and get the standard video streams (not CNN live) just fine. When I click on the "Live" button and then the "Unlock Live TV" button, I get, as expected, the "Sign in to watch live TV" dialogue box. So I click on Comcast, log in correctly, and am returned to the main screen. The page appears to be loading correctly, and then I get the "Sign in to watch live TV" dialogue box again. No matter how many times I try, that's what I keep on getting.
If this didn't work on my netbook, I'd just assume that for some reason the setup is Linux-unfriendly, but now I'm determined to get this working.
I've checked my plugin settings on my browsers and nothing seems amiss. I've tried deleting all cookies, persistent storage, Flash cookies and all such things, but to no avail. Even though I had the most recent version, I even uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, but that didn't change anything.

Get_iplayer worked very well for me under opensuse 11.2. After installing opensuse 11.3 it continued to work very well with the exception of STREAMING live BBC channels. These do not work at all. It seems the "modes" I am and have been using are not recognised. I use gnome and installed codecs using codecs_gnome.ymp for suse 11.3. I have no problem with any of the multimedia applications I use.

How can I watch streaming XviD movies on Ubuntu? Whenever I go to a page with an XviD, all that happens is the little "Buffering" wheel in the corner starts spinning but never plays, and when I click on the "Download and install the XviD Codec" in the middle screen, an error message pops up saying "We're sorry, our content is not compatible with your computer configuration."

I'm using 10.04 LTS and I followed these instructions hoping to improve video streaming -
Code:
sudo apt-get remove kaffeine-mozilla mozilla-helix-player mozilla-mplayer mozilla-plugin-vlc totem-mozilla xine-plugin
sudo apt-get install gnome-mplayer gecko-mediaplayer
I'm having trouble streaming vids now though, they are choppier than they were and when I navigate away, the sound stays on as if the video were still playing, I have to restart to make it stop. How would I go about un-doing the above?

I've been going through the Comprehensive multimedia and video howto a couple of times and never get streaming going. When testing on the Apple trailers site and this here I don't get it to work. I tried both streaming options set in the thread, (a) Gecko Media Player and (b) MPlayer Plug-in (removing the other one in between) and am getting very annoyed. Currently have option (a) installed.

I'm trying to watch live streaming video on a Slackware box I have connected to a television. I can get Flash to play, but that's almost always pre-recorded (and I'm trying to watch live sports.) The site I go to (which works on Windows) is [URL]. They provide streams that they collect somehow, but they're in different formats. (Some are in Windows Media, some are in Real, some are in quicktime, etc.) I'm using Firefox as a browser, but I could use something else. Beyond the default Slackware (13.0) installation, what additional software do I need?

I'm building a cheap htpc for my garage so I can watch the news, listen to music and browse a few car forums when needed. Here are the specs I am looking at:
2 512mb ddr2 800
AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W
500GB sata2 or 32gb ssd drive
Will Ubuntu be able to use a ssd? If so this box can pull movies in from my server. Which distro will play movies, watch live tv, and play music the best on the specs I provided?

I searched and found threads recommending mozilla-mplayer plugin in the synaptic packet thingymejig. Couldn't find it there myself and although I found a mplayer plugin in the other Ubuntu software library installation program, it didn't allow me to install it (there wasn't an install button!).
So is there a recommended way of getting Firefox to show mms streams?

Downloaded FF4. For my purposes it doesn't seem that much different from FF3. I was able to watch videos on a news website that I hadn't been able to with FF3! On FF3, with the windows theme I have, there is a nice blue tint on the top of the tab, but not on FF4.

For the server, I have a VPS runing CentOS, and for in the studio we have several PC`s runing Windows (XP/Vista/7).I want to create the streaming server on my CentOS VPS, and stream live video from a webcam connected to a Windows running PC in the studio, and stream it over our website using a flash player. What software should I use? (looking for something free, like shoutcast is for audio) I`ve found a lot of tutorials on the web but most of them are either for streaming from a linux based PC, or streaming for windows media player and real format.

Linux and ubuntu. second my computer is single os with ubuntu 9.10. the problem i have is trying to watch any thing streaming media. Movies, music, like from ....., divx, or even megavideo which seems to work best right now.
What happens is that the video or firefox it self seems to freeze up every 10 minutes or so.
It may be that i need to increase the buffer memory size but i do not know how to.
I have updated my computer and firefox and installed and updated any possible add-ons that would fix the problem.
What im asking for is either a patch or add-on that will help this problem or how to run windows inside of ubuntu. (Im am tired of windows and ubunu has made my computer work so much faster, when i am sure that i know how to make this computer stable with what i need for internet use i will apply it to my other computer.)

running ubuntu 8.04 dual boot with windows- need windows for avery label program, ibm via voice and access data base .chose 8.04 because of long term support. firefox is now unstable and does not do streaming video ' audio.[ustream in particular and others] usually i get the video but not the audio. sometimes the fox just closes and i can open it on the second try- sometimes not. skype does work. there may be a fix for the audio using libflash support program. where to get this& what to do with it is a problem.
perhaps it would be prudent to upgrade to 10.04 but this seems to be a work in progress and might lead me into further problems. on the other hand i could work up to ubuntu 9.10 if it would be more likely to work better the get to 10.04 when it is further along. i am pretty useless with the command line.on the whole ubuntu has worked well until this problem came up.

on almost every website i've tried with streaming media the media will not play. i don't know if this is something to do with the proxy server i have to use or a lack of plug-ins on firefox or something else entirely. (they're not blocked i can get them on a windows pc on the same network) [url] this one i can play from the command line with mpalyer but in a browser i get 'waiting for video' and the status bar says 'done' [url] this one i have control of the player buttons but it just says 'buffering' and the status bar says 'done'

on these two i have control of the player but the status bar says 'transfering data' then 'done and nothing plays [url] this one plays! why's it different? videos plays. bbc iplayer crashes firefox. $ uname -a linux seven 2.6.31-20-generic #58-ubuntu smp fri mar 12 05:23:09 utc 2010 i686 gnu/linux $ firefox -v mozilla firefox 3.5.9, copyright (c) 1998 - 2010 mozilla.org

I'm having problems with streaming divx videos in Firefox 3.6 on openSUSE 11.2. Every time I try to load a divx video Firefox ends up freezing, ultimately leading to dialog box giving me the option to terminate Firefox. No matter what plugin I try to use it's the same problem. I've tried mplayerplug-in, which shows a gray background with the Mplayer logo where the video should be but it keeps buffering, once I press play it freezes. I tried the vlc browser plugin which doesn't seem to even recognize anything and I tried gecko-mplayer, which didn't even show the logo and buffering. I tired removing Firefox and all the plugins and tried installing them again to no avail.

Rather than adding each music/video file one by one in XBMC is there a way to just add a folder to watch and as you add music under it, it automatically shows up in XMBC? If not, is there any application that allows something like that? I'm looking for one central application to use for all media playback - dvds, music, videos, pictures... XBMC seemed like the right choice, but I'll be adding moves and music for a year if I had to do each of them 1 by 1.
