Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Make A DVD That Works?

Feb 23, 2010

I'm trying to make a DVD that'll play on my stand alone DVD player. I import and edit the video using Kino and then export in an MPEG format. Fool that I am....I then waste hours and hours of time trying to create a DVD using Qdvdauthor. Then I click Create DVD and what does it do? It creates a bunch of useless files that when burned into a DVD produce a piece of junk.

Does anyone know exactly how to make a working video DVD on Ubuntu? unless you know exactly how to solve this problem don't send a bunch of links. I'm tired of reading the same regurgatated "how tos" that don't work.

Server :: Can't Make Vsftp Works On Ubuntu - Users Can't Login

Feb 20, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server and i need to use an ftp server. I installed vsftp but i can't make it to work. What doesn't work is that can't login to the ftp server with my user(s).I created a user ("AddressBookUser") that should access to some files located on "/var/www/fpt/rubriche/". I set this folder as his home. Here is the row for this user in /etc/passwd:

Quote:

AddressBookUser:x:1001:1002::/var/www/ftp/rubriche:/bin/false

This user is member of the group "rubriche_ro" (and no other groups). This is my /etc/vsftp.conf:

Quote:

listen=YES
#listen_ipv6=YES
#
anonymous_enable=YES

[code]...

vsftpd.chroot_list exists, but as you see above the chroot_list_file directive is disabled. When i try to connect to the FTP server the connections is established but after i insert "AddressBookUser" as user name and confirm i get a "530 permission denied" message. This occurs both from the network (LAN) computers and locally:

Quote:

webs@webs:/etc$ ftp localhost
Connected to localhost.
220 Welcome to WEBS FTP service!

[code]...

I can't figure out what is the problem but my thought was that it's a problem related to the user configuration rather than vsftp configuration, but it's only my supposition. If i try to login with the "main" user of my Ubuntu server, "webs" i can login correctly.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: CD ROM Works But Sometimes Does Not

May 10, 2011

Im running the upgrade to natty 64. My cd rom drive works when it wants to. when i put the disk in the system wont recognize it. so i just leave the disk in when i go to work. when i turn the comp back on 8-16 hrs later it will show up as ready to burn. i flashed back to windows and the drive wouldn't work at all, but on 10.04 it worked all the time. do you think that the drive is just being temperamental and is on its way out? or a kernel issue? If I shut the comp off and turn it right back on with the medium left in it, it will recognize the disk. this will not work on a restart.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Works But Does Not Record?

Jan 31, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on an Asus F3JC laptop with an integrated webcam and microphone. The webcam is a

Code:
user@ubuntu:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05e1:0501 Syntek Semiconductor Co., Ltd DC-1125 WebCam

and it works. If i tap on the microphone or if I blow on it, I hear noises but after I record something with gnome-sound-recorder I don't hear any sound! The same with Skype, for example.

On Xp (other hd partition) it works.

The audio device on the laptop is a

Code:
user@ubuntu:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC660 Analog [ALC660 Analog]

If I open the "sound preferences tool" the device for sound input is "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" and even if I tune the volume of the microphone I don't see any movement in the input level bar. I've also checked alsamixer and the digital volum in the capture interface is set at the maximum.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: SPDIF Pass-through Only Works With 2ch PCM?

Mar 27, 2010

I'm trying to get AC3/DTS passthrough working with my HTPC in which I'm using the onboard sound from an nForce 4-based motherboard. I've tested it in Win7 to check that all the connections etc are set up correctly and it works perfectly there. However under Kubuntu I can only get 2ch PCM sound to work through the SPDIF connection. Any DTS/DD sources just result in silence. If I go into Multimedia settings in the System Settings panel, the SPDIF device that shows up there (once I enable advanced devices) produces no sound with the Test button. I can hear a click as the device is activated but no sound is produced. I can also see that a digital signal is making it to my receiver as it has an icon which lights up when it locks onto a signal.Has anyone had success with SPDIF passthrough in 9.10? I've tried twiddling all the settings in Kmix relate to IEC and also tried following the Alsa wiki on digital passthrough without any success.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Distribution Where Audio Just Works?

Jul 20, 2010

Is there a Ubuntu distribution in which sound "just works"? I'm booting into Windows 7 far too much.I am running both Jaunty (on an old P4V533-MX desktop) where for some reason my sound went away, and Lucid, on a new Dell laptop (all-Intel Studio 14). I thought a new installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on modern hardware would give me rhythmbox back, but I get no sound of any kind from the Dell laptop after installation, although everything works Ok if I boot into a W7 (came with the purchase) partition.

I don't want to fiddle with configuration files any more - just wondering if there is a "most-dependable" Ubuntu with respect to audio. Which I will install. Frustrated and impatient after weeks of this.I am an old (hairy eared) Unix fan but IMO if Linux continues to complicate itself so freely (i.e. Pulseaudio - I don't know an audio mixer from a can opener and would prefer to remain that way), then the small market share it has will slip away rather than grow.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Why Isn't There A GUI Audio Ripper That Just Works

Nov 10, 2010

All I'd like to reliably do is rip a few audio CDs. SoundKonverter - doesn't work at all. Log tells me nothing SoundJuicer - OK for one disk. Usually crashes when the read disk is ejected and attempts are made to read the next. Failing that, it will read a few tracks and then lock up. K3B - Only rips first disk, then the progress window (form) locks up at 100%. Cancel button doesn't work. Need to kill task.

RipOff - works OK, but so slow... life's too short goobox - locks up before it even reads the disk and despite its claims I don't think it's a "rip" tool anyway.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Alsa Works - But Not Pulse

Jan 27, 2011

This is a fresh install of 10.10 (although I had the problem on 10.04 as well). I have installed MythTV on here (via apt-get, its not MythBuntu), and use the system primarily for that. Myth works great, sound in everything, no problems.

However, not much else can play sound. Firefox (.....), totem, mplayer, all nothing. Either just no sound or crash. If I can set them to use Alsa (eg: VLC), then they work.

System is an Asus P5B and on-board sound. I've also got an Nvidia GT210 and would like to use the HDMI out, but can't get anything at all to go through this. Don't know if thats related or not. Sound problems existed before adding the GT210.

One strange thing is, I can go into Preferences -> Sound -> Hardware and click "Test Speakers". Of course nothing plays. However, if I then set the onboard card to "Off", and then back to "Analogue Stereo Duplex", then click "Test Speakers", the left speaker works (right is still silent). But from then on, Pulse apps can play sound, until next reboot. Having FF open on a ..... video or something similar prevents Myth from playing sounds however.

What can I do to get sound working sanely? I don't need optical out, surround or anything. Simple stereo will be fine at this point, via either the onboard or the GT210.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xonar D2X Works But Not Used By Programs?

Mar 10, 2011

I just bought a Xonar D2X. Wonderful thing - recording from mic and quality of output to speakers is superb... on my Windows install. : /

It appears to work correctly in Kubuntu 10.10 as when I open up Sound and Video configuration, I can see it listed correctly and when I hit "Test", I get the annoying Ubuntu tinkle-plonk. But no application I use seems willing to use it. In fact, both Optical Outs (the motherboard's and the soundcards) are working fine when I try playing a test sound from this panel, but neither seems to be output to by VLC, Spotify or anything else I've tried.

I have set the entry "Xonar D2X Multichannel (IEC958 (S/PDIF)) Digital Audio Output to the preferred option for all output. Silence.

How do I convince VLC, Spotify et al, that the card really is there and they're really, really welcome to use it?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Works Only As Root

May 31, 2011

I have sound if I use aplay or start totem using sudo but neither have sound if I try aplay or totem as ordinary user. The groups command shows my user name is a member of the audio and video groups. If I look at the /etc/group file it also shows pulse as a member of audio group.

This is a command line install from the 10.04 Alternate CD to which I installed xorg, icewm, gdm, nautilus, synaptic, totem, firefox, gstreamer, alsa, pulse, and others. Every thing works except the user audio. Totem will show videos but no sound. Totem will play MP3 music files (show the cover art and the progress) but no sound. But it all works ok, good sound, if I start Totem as root.

What am I missing? I don't expect in depth help with this installation but thought maybe something would just pop out at someone?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: X-Server Works With LiveCD But Not On Installed 9.10

Jan 10, 2010

After a Christmas morning scramble trying to get Sims3 working for the kids, I ended up pulling an Nvidia 6200 AGP card out of a perfectly good Ubuntu box and threw it into the kids' PC. I replaced it in the Ubuntu system with an old Nvidia Geforce 2 Ti AGP. From the start I was unable to get any resolution higher than 800x600 with the GF2. Tried removing xserver-org, reinstalling, reconfiguring, etc. Installed the Nvidia legacy drivers, all no luck. Tried booting with a 9.10 live CD and it works perfectly - various resolutions, refreshes, etc. So, the card is capable. I've checked, rechecked, restored, modified xorg.conf to no success.

I'm at a text login now, startx returns (among other info) the following:
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so: undefined symbol: AllocateScreenPrivateIndex
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available
Fatal server error:
no screens found

Now, I've checked, and nvidia_drv.so is where it's supposed to be (in the drivers directory). What concerns me is the "//" in the directory path string in the (EE) above preceding the driver name - shouldn't this be a "/"? Is the command not able to find the driver correctly? Regardless, at this point my goal is simply to get the system to use whatever process the live cd is using which results in a working GUI. Don't need fancy 3d, etc, just want a working system.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get Dts Passthrough Works In Many Many Ways With No Success

Jan 18, 2010

I found myself in troubles. I was trying to get dts passthrough works in many many ways with no success. Finally I (desperately) decided to try OSS rather than ALSA following this guide: [URL].. And there the things went wrong. I ended up with no sound at all so I tried to reinstall alsa again but with no luck.

basicaly what I did after following the guide was: sudo apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils. sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base //and choose alsa

but still, for example:
$ alsamixer
puts:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
$ /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start
* Setting up ALSA... [ OK ]

but no alsa process at all. $ aplay -l aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found. It seems to me like sound card drivers are gone..

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Renoise Works Perfect But No Other App Has Sound

Feb 8, 2010

Recently I installed Renoise demo and followed their install instructions from the Renoise 2.1 quickstart guide. It said if you get any errors to do the following:

Configuring Realtime Threads:
If you get a warning message when you start Renoise, read this section. To allow Renoise to create realtime threads, which are required for low latencies with ALSA or JACK, you have to
edit the /etc/security/limits.conf file. A realtime kernel does NOT help here, it does not set the required options automatically! To enable RT thread creation via PAM open the /etc/security/limits.conf file in a text editor as root (or sudo). Then somewhere near the end of the file add:

YOURUSERNAME - rtprio 99
YOURUSERNAME - nice -10
Replace YOURUSERNAME with your username. You can discover this with the 'whoami' command.
Alternatively you could also create a group named "Audio", add your user to that group, and use '@Audio'
instead of 'YOURUSERNAME'.
Save the file. Log Out. Login. At this point it should be working. To verify that it works, launch Renoise, select ALSA and make sure the 'Realtime threads' option is on. You will get a friendly warning like the one above. If RT creation failed. Try again.

Jack Configuration
If you don't have "Jack Control (JACK Audio Connection Kit)", we recommend that you install it.
Jack Control allows easy Audio/MIDI routing with an intuitive GUI. On Ubuntu:
$ sudo apt-get install jackd qjackctl
Now you can start it from [Applications] -> [Audio] -> [Jack Control].
Click the "Setup" button, and set following values:
Change the "Priority" value to 89. (If you use realtime kernel, also add check mark beside "Realtime")
Change the "Periods/buffer" value to 3 or more.

In addition, please configure latency and other settings according to the needs of your system. Now I don't have sound where and when I used to, for example: songbird no longer plays sound tho it plays the track and no sound in web browsers aswell, like ..... plays but no sound. It has to be something simple because audio for everything was fine until editing that one file and installing that audio jack program.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: IMO Touch DisplayLink Monitor ALMOST Works?

Feb 14, 2010

I've got the iMO mostly working, but there are a few gaps that keep it from being actually useful.First, the stuff that works: Gave up trying for one display with two screens, and instead went with 2 displays. Started the USB display with:

Code:
xinit /usr/bin/fluxbox -geometry 800x480+0+40 -display :1.0 -- /usr/bin/X :1 -novtswitch -sharevts -layout USBScreen -dpi 75 >/tmp/dl1.log &
sleep 10
x2x -east -to :1 &
The "-layout" option references a ServerLayout in xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"

[Code]...

Move you finger from left-to-right, the cursor moves from right-to-left. Tried "InvX", "InvertX", "SwapX", but so far it looks like evtouch is ignoring all options. Xinput list-props only shows "enabled" as a property. Actually, even if this worked, the touch pad would still be a problem. Right now the touch pad input goes to the currently active screen. Ideally I'd like the touch pad to generate x-values to the right of the main screen so that it controls the USB screen, not the main screen. Might be an option that controls this, except evtouch ignores all options.

Suspend kills the USB bus If the PC goes into suspend while the USB display is active, when it returns all USB devices are dead; USB monitor, mouse, keyboard. Hard reset to clear. Also, if the USB display is idle long enough, it turns off the display. Moving the mouse over to that display then causes a USB failure and a hard reset. Might be cool to use it as an out-board screen, but not if the application menus don't work, the touch pad is backwards, and it locks up the system...
