I absolutely love Xubuntu, and I have it installed (9.10) on two laptops and one desktop pc.The only major problem: I can't play my dvds!! I've tried to open them with VLC, Totem, etc, but no luck. The icon appears, but says I'm missing some files.

So, I tried reviving my old windows laptop by installing Ubuntu on it, but it turned out to be too heavy for it, so i turned towards Lubuntu and Xubuntu.
Now, for the couple of days I used Ubuntu, until i decided it's moving too slow and I should go for a lighter version, my USB wireless adapter (and the touchpad, but that's a subject for another subforum) worked fine.
When I installed Lubuntu and Xubuntu, it stopped working. I tried using network-manager and wicd to make my adapter scan for wireless networks, but it's like the USB isn't even there. When I pulled it out and stuck it on my main PC (that is running Ubuntu), it was discovered immediately and connected to my router. But I can't do it on either Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
PS: If anyone has a quick hint about why my touchpad is working during the installation of Xubuntu, but not after it's complete and loads the desktop, I'll make a new post in the relevent section. A USB mouse works fine everywhere, but a touchpad isn't moving the pointer.
I can't get Ubuntu 10.04 to boot for install (to my desktop), it displays the logo then hangs for about a minute and displays the alert dialouge saying "Boot disk error."I've tried multiple CD-Rom drives, burned from multiple computers, with both the desktop and server downloads. I'm down about 10 CDs and 2 DVDs here I've checked their integrity (md5) as well as checked the disk integrity from another computer (laptop) and everything passed. I got xUbuntu to install effortlessly, so I don't know what's causing the problem for Ubuntu. I can even look at the contents of the Ubuntu Server CD from within xUbuntu -- so, I know the disk really should work.
My system specs are pretty basic:
2 x Xeon 2.0Ghz
Tyan S2720 Motherboard
2 Gig (4x512) ECC PC266 RAM

So I have a usb wireless adapter that I set up on my Xubuntu system, and it has been working great since. All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

I've been getting it up and running with Xubuntu. Xubuntu 9.10 just won't install--the screen goes blank and the computer locks up, with either the regular or the alternate install CD. I gather that this isn't an unknown issue in 9.10, so I'm installing 9.04 instead and I'll just wait until 10.04 comes out. Xubuntu 9.04 installs and runs like a charm.This is an HP Pavilion ze4125, with 768MB of RAM and an ATI Radeon IGP 320M video card. When I enter "sudo su -c "lspci | grep VGA", it returns "01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1".
So what I want to do now is install the best driver I can so I can make the most of the video card. XP let me use any number of high resolutions, but the Display icon in Xubuntu tops out at 1024x768. EnvyNG doesn't offer. anything compatible with my video card. I've tried installing ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64 and ati-driver-installer-9-12-x86.x86_64, but both say "Extraction failed" (I was running them with gdm stopped).So, is there something specific I should be doing to get access to higher resolutions, or a driver I need to install? This is easy on my main computer, which has an NVidia card, so I can use the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility to adjust the resolution--but obviously this machine doesn't have an NVidia card.

I get a message that says, "Failed to mount Ipod" with a description that says, "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so ."
I even went back to my XP to restore the ipod to factory settings essentially formating it, to see if that would help, but I get the same result.
Is there something that I may have overlooked?
i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to make my Xfce desktop in Debian 7 (wheezy) look the same way as in Xubuntu 12.04 (precise), I am able to (by copying some files from Xubuntu packages) make the fonts render the same way, set up the same desktop and icon themes etc and make everything look identical, with the exception of the fonts...
Since that, if I choose the font "Sans 10" for my desktop, in Debian - with all the same anti-aliasing options, and such, that I use in Xubuntu - the text looks smaller, everywhere, compared to Xubuntu.
So... How come this happens, if I have chosen the same font "Sans" with the same size "10"?
Below, are the different results, depending on the OS in question.

I remember this same thing happening, once, when I was experimenting with setting up an Openbox desktop environment, on top of an Ubuntu 12.04 command line install, where, if I used LightDM, as the login manager, I would observe this same font size "reduction" (in, at least, some of the applications), with the theme I was trying to set up, while, if I used GDM, as the login manager, I would not observe this same font size reduction. (And, so, it seemed that some GTK library(?), being used by the GDM, prevented this from happening(?)...)
Also, I read somewhere, on the Internet, that Xubuntu builds Xfce on top of GNOME(?) (libraries, I guess)...
Could it be that, by installing some GTK library, the fonts will "return" to normal size? Or, do I have to configure something else, somewhere?
(P.S. - I've also tried choosing the size "11", in Debian Xfce - in case it's a matter of different values used, for the numbers, in each OS - but, if I do so, it only makes the text bigger than in Xubuntu, with the size "10"...)
I've been having strange problems with my server/media center setup lately: The movie just stops in XBMC, as if it had reached the end, randomly, some times only once in a movie, sometimes every 5 min. Then, I have to rewind all the way to where I was to resume the movie.
I'll explain my setup:
Server with Ubuntu Server 8.04 with samba/lighttpd/proftpd/etc. which contains all the media (192.168.0.104)

Media PC which runs Xubuntu 8.10 (due to massive slowdown with the integrated intel gpu in 9.04) running XBMC 9.04. (192.168.10.102)
I use samba to serve the videos to the media center. I have considered putting them all into the hdd of the media center, but then I would have to put more HD's into it, and that would cause cooling issues due to the case being very small. Having a server has proven quite useful too. The movies I'm watching are in 480p or smaller resolution. First, my routers were in opposite positions. But the di-624+ couldn't take all the traffic going through it anymore after a couple of additional laptops were added to the network, and started rebooting frequently. I thought this was the reason for the stopping, so I decided to switch places (the DI-634 is more stable and also has much better wireless range, being newer and having dual antennas). After doing this, the same thing still happens, and looking at the routers' logs, they don't say anything about rebooting (also I was connected to IRC all the time, no disconnects there either).
Then, I figured my server was running out of RAM or something similiar, but I ruled that out after checking it (it only uses about 10% RAM, processor loads stay at about 1 all the time. I probably forgot to mention this, but this setup used to work 100% before. I haven't changed anything, besides updating both machines with apt-get update & upgrade.
Im running the upgrade to natty 64. My cd rom drive works when it wants to. when i put the disk in the system wont recognize it. so i just leave the disk in when i go to work. when i turn the comp back on 8-16 hrs later it will show up as ready to burn. i flashed back to windows and the drive wouldn't work at all, but on 10.04 it worked all the time. do you think that the drive is just being temperamental and is on its way out? or a kernel issue? If I shut the comp off and turn it right back on with the medium left in it, it will recognize the disk. this will not work on a restart.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make a DVD that'll play on my stand alone DVD player. I import and edit the video using Kino and then export in an MPEG format. Fool that I am....I then waste hours and hours of time trying to create a DVD using Qdvdauthor. Then I click Create DVD and what does it do? It creates a bunch of useless files that when burned into a DVD produce a piece of junk.
Does anyone know exactly how to make a working video DVD on Ubuntu? unless you know exactly how to solve this problem don't send a bunch of links. I'm tired of reading the same regurgatated "how tos" that don't work.
I'm on 10.04. Every dvd ripper I've tried so far has failed in one or another. I have all restricted extras and medibuntu codecs installed.
DVD::Rip either throws an error message or stops ripping somewhere through the process
Handbrake only finds some of the dvd titles
OGM rip gives an "Unknown error"
Acidrip says "mencoder interrupted by user"
I am trying to connect my 2nd Gen Ipod to Xubuntu and import my music collection onto the Ipod. I am having real problems with this. Rhythm Box does not recognise the Ipod with the plug-in, I have tried Amarok, but each time I tried to open it, it just crashed, tried sending a bug report but that did not want to work. I have also tried Exaile with the Ipod plug-in but when you go to the device manager you can click on the Ipod but nothing happens. I have tried looking at the Exaile forums but this seems to be a problem for others as well. The Ipod mounts ok, now a bit stuck.

If I open the "sound preferences tool" the device for sound input is "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" and even if I tune the volume of the microphone I don't see any movement in the input level bar. I've also checked alsamixer and the digital volum in the capture interface is set at the maximum.
I have a Zune and I know of the issue of not talking well w/ linux... What portable video / MP3 player works well w/ Ubuntu w/o going the route of wine or Virtualbox as I do not want to waste a day or two getting those hacks to work

I'm trying to get AC3/DTS passthrough working with my HTPC in which I'm using the onboard sound from an nForce 4-based motherboard. I've tested it in Win7 to check that all the connections etc are set up correctly and it works perfectly there. However under Kubuntu I can only get 2ch PCM sound to work through the SPDIF connection. Any DTS/DD sources just result in silence.If I go into Multimedia settings in the System Settings panel, the SPDIF device that shows up there (once I enable advanced devices) produces no sound with the Test button. I can hear a click as the device is activated but no sound is produced. I can also see that a digital signal is making it to my receiver as it has an icon which lights up when it locks onto a signal.Has anyone had success with SPDIF passthrough in 9.10? I've tried twiddling all the settings in Kmix relate to IEC and also tried following the Alsa wiki on digital passthrough without any success.

just installed ubuntu 10.04 a week back.It updated as well through the update manager.Then I installed latest version(beta) of skype from the .deb downloaded from their website.In the beginning my webcam was detected but the video used to flicker.So I searched the net for a solution.I tried launching skype using 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype' command but there was hardly any difference.Then I came across gstreamer properties.I tried the three options and there started the problem.Now my webcam is detected only on its first launch.Once i stop the test there appears a black screen.I uninstalled and reinstalled skype but in vain.I tested it using cheese and vlc as well.

I'm booting into Windows 7 far too much.I am running both Jaunty (on an old P4V533-MX desktop) where for some reason my sound went away, and Lucid, on a new Dell laptop (all-Intel Studio 14). I thought a new installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on modern hardware would give me rhythmbox back, but I get no sound of any kind from the Dell laptop after installation, although everything works Ok if I boot into a W7 (came with the purchase) partition.
I don't want to fiddle with configuration files any more - just wondering if there is a "most-dependable" Ubuntu with respect to audio. Which I will install. Frustrated and impatient after weeks of this.I am an old (hairy eared) Unix fan but IMO if Linux continues to complicate itself so freely (i.e. Pulseaudio - I don't know an audio mixer from a can opener and would prefer to remain that way), then the small market share it has will slip away rather than grow.
All I'd like to reliably do is rip a few audio CDs. SoundKonverter - doesn't work at all. Log tells me nothing SoundJuicer - OK for one disk. Usually crashes when the read disk is ejected and attempts are made to read the next. Failing that, it will read a few tracks and then lock up. K3B - Only rips first disk, then the progress window (form) locks up at 100%. Cancel button doesn't work. Need to kill task.
RipOff - works OK, but so slow... life's too short goobox - locks up before it even reads the disk and despite its claims I don't think it's a "rip" tool anyway.
I have a Zotac Mag Atom computer with Nvidia ION graphics. This computer i use as a HTPC hooked up to my 42" LG flatscreen via HDMI. The problem i have is that after have installed de correct graphics drivers the graphics chip only sends picture over HDMI whilst there allso is going sound.
