Can't enable 3d effects on lucid lynx even if restricted nvidia driver (v195.36.24) is installed and activated. Actually 3D effects were working with compiz etc, but at a given moment -not sure if after the final release of the 10.04 - they stopped working, and now it always fails to enable them.

Come to find out this has been a long standing bug with the menus not redrawing properly. My question is, now that I've installed the restricted driver 188, how do I go back to an open source one?

So far I have installed both the kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia packages, and I still cannot enable desktop effects. After i installed the akmod package, I sometimes see the nvidia logo for a split second when I log out, but my drivers are still not correctly installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just finished my new build and installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.I have in it an MSI N8400GS D512D3H (NVidia Geforce 8400GS) which I thought would work for Ubuntu. After installing Ubuntu the visual effects are disabled, can't even get "Normal" settings in the Appearance dialogue. Updates have all been installed. Apt has been updated. "Hardware Drivers" screen draws a blank. No proprietary drivers listed at all. First time I've actually used a Graphics Card in an Ubuntu install.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Zotac IONITX-F-E motherboard (Intel Atom Dual Core 1.6 GHz + Nvidia ION) -based box with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit installed. My goal is to play back 1080p video. I read somewhere that the nouveau driver that installs by default with ubuntu 10.04 does not support VDPAU. So, my first step is to install the nVidia proprietary driver. I tried following a half-dozen different guides for doing this, none of which worked. Let's take this one for example: [URL] I purge. I reboot. I run the Nvidia installer (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run). I get:
Code: ERROR: Unable to create '/usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.195.36.15' for copying (no such file or directory). So, I run: Code: sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-185 nvidia-185-modaliases I try the nvidia installer again. It works. I reboot. I get a message saying that ubuntu is running in low graphics mode, because loading the nvidia kernel module failed. I check /var/log/messages and see: Code: API mismatch: the client has version 195.36.24 but the kernel module has version 195.36.15. I take a Tylenol and here I am.
I've had Ubuntu installed on my desktop for a month now, and its all worked like a charm, so I'm thrilled. I then decided to install it on my old laptop as well to see if I could breath a bit more life into it, and to get used to working Ubuntu a bit more. The laptop had 18.6GB partitioned to C:// drive or windows XP, and an empty 18.6GB D:// drive, so I deleted the D:// drive in XP using the Microsoft disk utilities tool, all well and good. I then did a clean install of Ubuntu-9.10-desktop with an Ubuntu CD into the largest continuous free space, and it set it up nicely. When I first booted it up there were a ton of updates to install, as there had been on the desktop first time, which I dutifully installed. As on the desktop a little notice popped up telling me to install the NVidia Proprietary driver for the NVidia card (specifically "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96)[Recommended]"), as it had when I installed it on the desktop, so I chose to install that and then restarted the computer.
On restarting GRUB2 loaded, and it booted Ubuntu. I then saw the little white logo on the black screen for a couple of seconds, and then the screen goes completely white, with some pixels left behind fading to white slightly slower. First time through I held down the power button to force shut down, and on restart exactly the same thing happened. This time I held down alt+sysrq and went through the R, E, I, S, U, B sequence, however as opposed to usual I didn't get a black terminal-like screen after hitting any of the buttons, although it did reboot on B. It did boot correctly in recovery mode, however I was at a loss what to do here. Incidentally, the same problem occurred when I booted to previous version of the kernel as well.
Then I decided that as I didn't have any data to lose, and it was still early in the day, I'd do a clean re-install. This time I chose to ignore the updates, and just install the NVidia driver as prompted to check that it was the driver causing the trouble. Having installed the driver and restarted I got exactly the same problem as before - definitely this pesky NVidia driver, not any of the updates.So here I am at clean install 3, having just got all the updates, but not having downloaded the NVidia driver as prompted, with little desire to go through yet more reinstalls. My questions are:
1) Do I need to install this NVidia driver? The rest of the computer specifications are fairly paltry by modern standards, and I won't be doing anything graphics intensive on it (the most graphical program will probably be Battle for Wesnoth) and I I don't need to install it, not installing it seems to be the easiest way to solve the problem.
2) If I do need to install it how would I go around doing this without getting my charming white screen?
3) Is there a way of removing the driver from recovery mode that doesn't involve a clean install again? I have tried sudo apt-get purge nvidia-driver, which tells me there isn't any installed. I have tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf which made no difference. I have tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and this didn't help. I have tried a couple of other commands as well but I can't remember them, however I would probably recognise them if I saw them again.

View 9 Replies View RelatedTook my laptop into the computer shop for a format and asked what they thought of Linux etc, they suggested i tried Ubuntu and installed it for me.Ive been searching around trying to get past the fact that my graphics card is black listed so i can enable effects but am having no luck, im not to worried about flashy effects like the cube but i would like to tidy up my desktop as it is very cluttered with the original setup im not sure how to post a screen shot but all the icons are very big and un-appealing.would love to simplify it all and maybe have the window navigator along the bottom.Im not to confident with using the Terminal, but have had a go at Compiz-Check etc and some random commands.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got an ati x1270 in my laptop and removed the fglxr driver and now I can't enable desktop effects and the preinstalled driver clearly isn't working and I don't really want to reinstall ubuntu AGAIN. I'm getting tired of it. I wouldn't have removed the driver except that I think it was effecting my booting because I was booting to a blank screen (and it wasn't my ram)

Since the last driver error I had posted the thread was starting to drift WELL off the original issue so now I am opening a new thread since it IS a whole different problem in general;So, I was having issues with my driver not being enabled. After I installed it manually it appeared to be correct how-ever when I ttried to enable special effects, and compiz, it didn't work.And even after a correct installation of the driver some windows when they pop up look like static then appear.Graphics card is an:nVidia 6150SE onboard card.I know it can handle compiz, and effects, because it did before on the other version of ubuntu I had.

I'm currently running 10.04, when I went to go turn on visual effects it gave me a prompt to install an nVidia driver, after installation was complete it said I had to restart. When I start it up the screen flickers from being on and off, it then finally stops at being on but nothing shows up. Please help. My graphics card is nVidia G210M. Sony Vaio.

I've read a lot about wireless network cards but I haven't found something similiar to my problem. I've a belkin wireless card F5D7000tt and its driver bcmwl5.inf. I think I've correctly installed it because when I use "ndiswrapper -l" i get:

I am not able to enable composite with the nvidia driver. And a few other issues that I been able to get around but so far the nvidia driver is my main problem.

Installed 10.10 rc from CD about 3 days prior to official release and everything was working fine... went about installing software and setting up laptop for use. About one week later, got prompted for upgrade and went ahead through update manager. Now can't enable desktop effects. Right after upgrade had a period where title bars of windows would not display... menus were present, but no title bars, no maximize/minimize/close buttons and no dragging windows to new locations on screen That has since resolved itself. Spent quite awhile searching forums, created xorg.conf at one point, later deleted it.

I have new hardware and I'm doing a dual boot, hoping that Ubuntu will be my primary OS, but I'm having trouble ringing it out. I installed Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 and in the past with an old machine I could turn on visual effects. With this machine, when I try to, it says it's looking for a driver, blinks a bit and then comes back with a message saying "Desktop visual effects cannot be enabled."
I assume that I don't have the nVidia driver loaded. When I go to Hardware Drivers, it says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." In synaptic, the latest driver does not show up. I followed the instructions on this site that someone put up which required adding some lines to the "Blacklist" then purging old drivers. It said to expect an error and what to do then, but I never got the error. When I tried to do the rest of the commands anyway, nothing seemed to happen. One of the steps was to download the latest driver, which I did. It was a .run file...........
After installing Ubuntu and seeing my resolution would only go to 800 x 600, I found this strange. A message popped up about the nVidia drivers I could downlaod that would enable me to do more so I did. I restarted and all was fine. Nice effects, high resolution. However, after going on XP, then going onto Ubuntu, the screen ahs gone black. The white Ubuntu logo can be seen for a while as it loads, but then the monitor goes completely blank as I hear the sound when the log-in screen appears.As I said in my title, it was the 185 driver

View 11 Replies View Relatedi installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
