View 5 RepliesI'm trying to install Fedora 13 (Desktop Edition) on a new hard drive (the previous one working on Vista is dead now). I have downloaded Fedora and put it on a USB external drive for installing, but my computer doesn't seem to detect it (all I got is a blinking "_" on black screen).
My computer is a laptop Packard Bell "Easynote" SJ81 (with AMD Turion 64), and I have a Samsung Spinpoint SATA hard disk on it.
just wanted to know if you can load more than one linux operating system on one hard drive? is it just like having windows and linux? I'm using ubuntu now but I really like opensuse as well.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install a linux distrobution on a laptop that can only boot off a cd or harddrive (or network? not sure), except that it has no cd drive and no operating system. That's right, no floppy no USB no CD. I read on the internet a chap installed Ubuntu with these conditions by taking out the harddrive and installing an old copy of Ubuntu on it on another computer with a disc drive, and then putting it back in his laptop and upgrading.
Now I have installed DOS 7.10 before on this laptop hard-drive and it worked, but it wasn't very useful, being a text based system. I have tried installing Windows XP (only because I am familiar with it) but my installation CD is OEM, and doesn't seem to like it. So I put the ubuntu 4.10 cd in my desktop with the CD drive after clearing all data off the laptop hard-drive (DOS 7.10). Then the cd boots and I am given the menu to install ubuntu. So I press Enter, it starts installing and then freezes at the language selection screen. So what is my problem? I have pressed lots of keys in order to get some response, but nothing. I waited 10min for something to happen, but nothing did.
So I was installing 10.10 to be my only operating system on my 3 year old custom built computer and all of a sudden it stopped working at the point of "whenever you are ready" but not letting me go forward because it still was loading. I waited a long time and it was frozen so I restarted my computer and now I don't have anything on it. No operating system at all. Except the symbol " _ " blinking rapidly. Nothing is working and I just want to run 10 on my desktop
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been working with dualboot XP and ubuntu on my laptop and screwed the system completely. No matter what I do I get the message "Operating system not found".I also have been trying with, super grub disk, without success.
My question: Can I solve the problem with a new or a blank Harddisk?
Like it says in the title, I am thinking it should be this hard to install the RAID1 array in my brand new PC. Here is what is happening. I have two brand new 1TB drives that I am attempting a new, fresh install of 10.10 on (in fact, the entire box is new). I am attempting to use the alternate desktop install so that I can have access to the manual partitioning (which is required to setup RAID 1, correct?).
I tried to use the guide here: [URL]... I followed the steps, but when I got the the very end (after selecting and creating the MDs) I get an error message stating that there is no root file system defined. I went back and checked all the steps and I am sure I followed everything in the guide.
Here are some quirks (not sure if they are bugs or not) In step 5 of the disc partitioning, it says to select the bootable flag and set it to yes (I am assuming). I press enter over that options, the screen flashes really quickly to a progress bar, but then comes back to the options screen and it still says bootable flag is off. No matter how many times I do it is says "off".
Also, and here is the bigger problem I think. - So the guide says to select the free space in each drive and then select Automatically Partition the free space, which I do, and it comes back and looks formatted accordingly - has 975.6 GB ext4 / and 24.6 GB swap swap. No Problem there.
BUT - whenever I do the same thing to the second drive, the partitions on the first seem to disappear. Meaning, it doesn't say free space, and has two partitions listed, but the / and the swap (last items in each row) have moved to the second drive partitions. I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to be since the pictures in the linked guide to not show what it looks like after that. THis is driving me crazy and I have to have it set up in RAID 1 and unsure as to what it is I am missing.
Will a Linux operating system lose data during a power failure as does a Windows operating system?
(If yes.) This has not come up before but I'm going to be doing some work I don't want to lose.
Could you either point me to a backup tutorial or give me the quick overview of preserving stuff with Ubuntu?
I have 6 hard drives that have 9.10 and 10.04 on them. Not as a dual boot, but some hard drives have different versions on them. When I have plugged the drives in a couple of weeks later, the grub is gone and system will not boot. I get like a grub 1.5 error and that is all the options I have. Does anyone one know why this happens? Nothing on the drives but the O/S to get rid of windows. All drives worked perfect until they were removed and installed later.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.

It takes a good minute and a half to boot to the Plasma desktop and it even seems to run faster off of the LiveCD.His system easily meets the specifications to run Kubuntu (4 gigs of RAM, decent NVIDIA graphics card) yet it slows to a crawl immediately upon booting. Does anyone know how to fix this? The hard drive is a Western Digital MyBook, 475GB model.

The Verbatim flash drive will boot my Dell Studio XPS and my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook. It will NOT boot either of my Dell Dimension 4600s. The Dimension 4600s respond with a message "Missing operating system" when I try to boot from the Verbatim drive. The Firefly works on all machines and I configured Kingston 1GB and 2GB Data Travelers which also work on all machines.
What file system should I use to partition a slow and old hard drive? I know that ext2 was best for old computers which mine is not but I am using an old hard drive for extra storage and I was curious if anyone knew if using ext2 or ext4 would show any performance differences.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 160Gig and a 40 Gig drive.I would like to install the system on the 160 Gig, and use the 40 Gig drive as a storage for backups or whatever.It appears in the installation process that I am required to use a mount point, which would then turn the drive over to the root system, which would not allow it to be totally available to me.I just want to format it to ext3 filing system.Coffeecat, if you are out there and see this, strange things are happening to the 40 Gig drive - it says it is using 2 gig, but it is totally empty of all system files, hidden files, trash, etc. and it is being imaged in the media folder in root. I believe I have messed this install up to the point of no return and think I should go ahead and start over.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I'm dealing with large numbers of computers that need to have identical windows installations put on them, I love using Symantec/Norton Ghost to image the NTFS partition (just making the .gho file the size of the disk I've used, instead of the 160/320GB full volume size), and then uploading it automatically to a windows share.I'd love to be able replicate this exact process with Ubuntu. I have one computer that's ready to go, and a few dozen more that I'd like to quickly get that same image on.
I've heard that there's a command called dd that can make disk images, but I'd really like some sort of boot disk that can allow me to make an image, save it, then run the boot disk on another computer to allow me to reconnect to the server and dump that image on that computer. Ghost 4 Linux doesn't have a network/server component, I think.even if such solutions cost money, I'd love to know if they exist or not.

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have minor problem with upgrading a hard drive. I am running an old pentium lll with two hard drives. On the first hard drive I have two partitions of around 90GB each. On the first partition is installed winXP and on the second partition I have Suse 10.3, both booted by grub and living happily side by side. My second hard drive (which is formatted for windows is only 4GB.
My problem arises when I try to replace the 4GB with a 80Gb hard drive. When I disconnect the 4GB drive the system fails to boot up and complains with error 21.
I have a serious problem with my computer. I had once shut down my windows forcefully( i.e. using the button) and now i am now not able to login to windows again. I tried installing linux from the booting cd but was not possible also. Now when I start my computer I get an error message. What to do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on an old IBM T21 laptop. It starts very happily, and I am able to partition the disk & copy the files to the HDD. However, when it loads the desktop there is an icon for the CD drive (and install disk). Everything appears to be fine, but I don't see any confirmation of the installation being completed. The CD drive does not open when the button is pressed. When I restart the laptop, I get the message 'operating system not found'. Starting the machine using the CD works fine. The disk shows that the partitions have been created, and I am told that Ubuntu 9.10 is installed.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI formatted my 2nd hard drive(IDE) inside of windows. So I had a clean 80 GIG HDD. I downloaded the wubi installer and allowed it to have 30 GIGs of the newly formatted hard drive. I restarted it and it just used my 250GIG SATA drive. I then restarted and pressed esc. to make it use the 80 GIG and it said operating system not found. I then deleted it and tried again. Same result. I then reformatted it marked it as active and installed Ubuntu again and it did boot the 80 but it said the NTLDR is missing.

I have been trying to find an answer for the past 4 hours, and I am stressing out right now. I bought a IBM Thinkcentre Celeron 2.8ghz off ebay, and when I turn it on it had no operating system. It says: "1962: No operating system found. Press F1 to reboot." I press F1, and it just did they same thing. Came up with that message.
Then I searched on the net for some answers on how to install ubuntu onto a computer without an operating system, and they said to enter BIOS menu and boot the ubuntu from the USB. So I turned the comp back on, and I pressed every button on the Computer except F1, and it did nothing. I dont know how to get into the BIOS menu.
