Ubuntu Multimedia :: CD / DVD Drive Doesn't Work Randomly
Jul 20, 2011
i'm new to ubuntu, i've only had it for about a month and i've had no problem putting audio or blank cds in, and suddenly, the icon stopped showing up and banshee music player wont show that there is a cd inserted. and i've looked around every where for a way to solve this to no luck so thats why i'm asking now.
I had a script before my machine broke recently that would allow me to select a folder then randomly copy MP3's from that folder to a USB drive. I cannot seem to find it again, the closest I came to is one called 'Randomcopy 0.6b' which has been modified for iPod Shuffle, and also the non-iPod version of the same script which appears to run fine but copies a bit too fast and nothing is placed on the device.
I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?
When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:
I am using MSI X620. I just intalled ubuntu 10.04 in it. Everything is fine except my DVD drive. The dvd drive doesn't work at all! When i press eject button ..nothing happens and there is no light blinking in the drive....when i load windows it works fine though! do i need to install drivers or something?
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a 16GB USB-Stick using the Startup Disk Creator. After booting from it, I saw the progress dots running on the start screen running for ever (30 minutes until I switched off my Laptop). The whole time the in-use LED of my Harddrive was on. What is Ubuntu doing so long on my Harddisk? How can I manage, that it will work properly?
My CD drive is attached as secondary slave but it doesn't appear anywhere, eg. no /dev/hdd or /dev/cdrom. It is not listet in hwinfo either. I completely re-installed SuSE from network today, so it's the newest version. The drive always worked fine in SuSE 9.x and also booting the Network Setup CD worked properly.
May there be missing packages? What do I have to check next?
Code: HP Mini 210 Fedora 15 - latest updates I bought a HP USB Flash Drive v117r 16GB
I bought this 3 months ago and everything worked fine. However, I went to plug it into my computer and nothing came up in the file manager, the Flash drive was not detected.
I have PC running Fedora 15 and I have a iMac. The Flash drive didn't work for any of these. However, I have other Flash drives that I have had for many years and they still work. I have also tried different usb ports.
Once thing that is positive in my /var/log/messages I get the following:
Code: Jun 18 18:01:59 stevenet kernel: [95007.342161] usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 29 Jun 18 18:01:59 stevenet kernel: [95007.981728] usb 1-4: New USB device found, idVendor=03f0, idProduct=af07 Jun 18 18:01:59 stevenet kernel: [95007.981743] usb 1-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
I have a hard time mounting two external drives on my Suse 11.3. When I use the device notifier gadget both drives get mounted in /media/<drive name>, the vfat drive is read-only though. However, I would like to mount both drives under /<drive name> in separate directories and rw. I looked at the devices in /dev/ and entered the device name to fstab, set the mount point, file system (vfat, and ntfs-3g) and set 'rw,noauto, exec, user, sync 0 0'.
This way I could mount my vfat drive read-only under /<drive name>, but not the ntfs one. After a reboot i noticed that the external drives get different IDs in /dev. E.g. what I had in my fstab under /dev/sdc1 got /dev/sdf1, and /dev/sdc was unknown. I am doing something wrong here, what worked in 11.0 does not seem to work here.
I bought a new CDROM drive, as recommended by HP. It still doesn't work. I can open and close it now; so that's changed. But it still doesn't appear as a drive, and I can't use it.
Here's as best as I can describe it:
When starting up, the boot order doesn't recognize the cdrom drive, but I can open and close the drive during this time.
In Windows 7, I can't open the cdrom drive, and it doesn't recognize it in device manager, disk management, or my computer.
In Ubuntu Linux, I can open the cdrom drive, but it still doesn't recognize the cds, and it won't mount.
If I reformat everything, would my cdrom drive work again? Can I reinstall Windows without a cdrom drive? I've deleted the upper and lower filters as was suggested in Google searches. Took the disk drive out and checked that it was installed correctly (no reason it shouldn't have been). Still: nothing works.
OpenSUSE 11.2 x86_64 KDE SC 4.4.3 Linux 2.6.34-rc6-29-desktop (from KERNEL:HEAD) HAL 0.5.13-4.2.1 udisks 1.0.0.git20100224-11.1 ASRock G43Twins-FullHD LGA 775 Intel G43 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard Samsung 22X DVDR DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223Q (connected via SATA. detected as: /dev/sr0)
Discs are read by the drive when inserted (they are spun and the LED light on the drive lights up) but nothing happens after that.
I disconnected the SATA cable and tried a new SATA cable on a different SATA port and also tried a different SATA power cable but that did not fix anything.
I have a Macbook 2,1 since 2007. Last week my hard drive just died, so I decided to replace it with a new one, no problems with that. The problem came when I had to install an operative system, because my DVD drive has been broken for a year and a half now. I know we can easily install MacOSX from an external usb drive, but I don't have a big enough pendrive at the moment. So I went for Ubuntu. I have managed to get an Ubuntu 10.10 live usb stick working like charm, if anyone is interested. I just downloaded the latest i386 iso and followed this advice by pxwpxw for the 32bit EFI.
The only thing I had to change in the boot.cfg was the name of the iso and -very important- changed initrd.gz for initrd.lz. The live usb works great. But I decided to do an installation on the hard drive. I installed it using the whole hard drive and didn't get any errors. But when I boot the macbook it doesn't detect anything. I guess I need an EFI bootloader or something to make it work. I've tried to follow this guide but it seems to be intended for someone who already has MacOSX and the Ubuntu installation working. I just want to install a bootloader or whatever I need from the "outside" (from the live usb I'm using). I tried to just throw reFit into the main hard drive's root folder but it doesn't work. I think that maybe creating an HFS+ partition and installing reFit in it may work, but I don't think I can create that kind of partition from the Ubuntu usb and I also need a working MacOSX to run the enable.sh. I've also read of elilo but I've seen that it hasn't been updated for 3 years
It's been almost two months since this problem started. I'm running 9.10, Karmic Koala, with all updates. I was hoping one of the updates would just fix this problem.
The microphone does not appear to work at all. It seems to exist because I have a choice for "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" under "sound preferences," but I don't know how else to check whether this is true. Sound Recorder does not record anything and Skype does not capture any sound from me.
how to run commands in the terminal and I consider myself an intermediate user, I just don't know anything about sound.
I have a problem with the BBC iplayer. I've upgraded ubuntu to 10.04 and iplayer has stopped working. The iplayer desktop refuses to run, both when the desktop (or menu item) is clicked, and also when a download is clicked on the iplayer site. I've tried uninstalling AdobeAir, and reinstalling. Also, I've completely removed AdobeAir and Iplayer and reinstalled. Still nothing. I'm running 10.04 on a Lenovo 3000 N200 with an Intel Centrino dual core. Flummoxed I'm flummoxed.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, using Audacity 1.3.12 beta... and trying to get it to work with a USB Mic.
In Audacity ALSA I/O preferences, I can select the USB mic. But when I record, the input meter stays at about half-way and does not fluctuate when I speak into the microphone... I can hear myself very faintly on the playback... but it is very quiet and there is a loud buzzing. There are no mechanical reasons for this buzzing, such as computer fan, etc...
Also, I cannot find the USB mic in Ubuntu Sound Prefereces...
i just installed ubuntu netbook remix 10.04.1 on an aspire one 532h netbook, and everything works great except i cant get the mic to work with skype. i know the mic is working correctly because i tried it in sound recorder and was able to record and playback my voice.all sound levels are where they should be, and everything seems to be in order. i'm using the latest beta of skype also. i installed pavucontrol but that didn't do anything.because the mic is working, i'm beginning to think it may be a problem with skype.
I needed to switch from Win7 starter to Ubuntu 10.10 remix netbook edition) as Win 7 became more disappointing than it even was I'm praising Ubuntu for many things but having one issue: unable to detect my CD/DVD USB connected external drive, hence impossible to load any software that I was hoping to use with my netbook. ve read on Internet that it apperas to be a bug in the Ubuntu 10.10 netbook version - has anyone have any solution to this problem? I'm willing to experiment a bit as I'm in a desperation to get my software going! cheers
l installed thelatest beta version of skype from officila skype on my ubuntu 9.10,but my webcam doesn' t work and l can not see other webcams, lt work correctly with amsn and cheese
I am experiencing a strange problem. I have two vga monitors and a ATI Radeon HD 3300 embedded on my motherboard. My embedded graphics card has a vga and dvi output. When I plug my monitors in (one uses a dvi to vga dongle) only the one with out the dongle gets a signal. I can swap which monitor uses the dongle and still only the one that does not use the dongle gets a signal (both monitors work, only if they are not using a dongle). Both Ubuntu and Windows are having trouble displaying video, but no trouble detecting the monitors (display settings show both monitors but do not tell me good resolutions for them). My friend has a different dvi to vga dongle, his only has about half of the dvi pins while mine has all the pins. Could the problem be that my dongle has all the dvi pins
just got this netbook like 2 days and tried out windows 7 which it came with but hated it so i switched to ubuntu netbook remix but i noticed i cant use skype on it which is pretty important for me. i basically just reinstalled it and or osme reason it worked this time
I'm running xubuntu 10.04 and I've installed media codecs as per the " Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto " thread. I also have faac, libfaac0, faad, and libfaad2 installed. But when viewing some videos or trying to transcode to anything with the aac codec I get the "no AAC" error. How can I fix this?
It partially works but I got a couple of issues (using 10.04 x86-64). I use it with a Stereo headphones and a mic.
1) It only outputs in 7.1/5.1 mode and only on the left headphone. If I reselect 7.1/5.1 while an audio stream is playing then I get stereo back. I've checked with Ubuntu 10.10 live CD and apparently the left channel is mapped to front, while the right is mapped to sub-woofer. How can I fix this?
2) The mic doesn't work. When I select the Xonar D1, I can choose between Analog Input, Analog Line In and Analog Microphone. When I switch between those I can hear a click coming from my pc, as if something HW is switching. I tried playing around with alsamixer but it doesn't work. Any idea how to make the mic work?
Using Lucid and most things seem to be going OK but I can't get the computer to take the line-in signal.
It's an AsRock M3A785GMH/128M mainboard (ALC888 Audio) and I'm on Lucid 64-bit.
I've checked the jack's in the right socket, that the input is elected in both the normal ALSA volume control and pulse, and that the volume controls are turned up.
I know also that there is a signal going into the line-in lead!
The web cam on my Dell Inspiron mini 10 doesn't work properly. Cheese only takes very dark pictures but no video and the main screen stays dark all the time. Skype transmits a very dark image, too. How can that be tweaked.
