I am using MSI X620. I just intalled ubuntu 10.04 in it. Everything is fine except my DVD drive. The dvd drive doesn't work at all! When i press eject button ..nothing happens and there is no light blinking in the drive....when i load windows it works fine though! do i need to install drivers or something?

I use it as a headless server and the power button had always worked.at first, I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 and everything was working great but I decided to reinstall the os on a new HDD. then when I want to shutdown the server, I need to login with ssh and shutdown it with "halt -p", the power button doesn't do anything. I connected a monitor to the server to see what's happen on the screen but nothing... no message. nothing in the error log.I tried to add apm force_off=1 in the /etc/modules but still not working.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy CD drive is attached as secondary slave but it doesn't appear anywhere, eg. no /dev/hdd or /dev/cdrom. It is not listet in hwinfo either. I completely re-installed SuSE from network today, so it's the newest version. The drive always worked fine in SuSE 9.x and also booting the Network Setup CD worked properly.
May there be missing packages? What do I have to check next?

I bought this 3 months ago and everything worked fine. However, I went to plug it into my computer and nothing came up in the file manager, the Flash drive was not detected.
I have PC running Fedora 15 and I have a iMac. The Flash drive didn't work for any of these. However, I have other Flash drives that I have had for many years and they still work. I have also tried different usb ports.

I installed a 30 gig hard drive for extra storage space. It is currently using the ext2 file system. When looking at it in gparted, there is a key icon next to the drive. I would like to use this drive for storage with programs running in WINE, but can't even see the drive from there. From the normal OS, I can see and mount the drive, but can't use it for anything.
I am going to go out on a limb and guess that the key icon means it is locked somehow. How do I unlock/use this drive? Is there a command to use in the terminal, or within the Disk Utility that will do it?
I have a hard time mounting two external drives on my Suse 11.3. When I use the device notifier gadget both drives get mounted in /media/<drive name>, the vfat drive is read-only though. However, I would like to mount both drives under /<drive name> in separate directories and rw. I looked at the devices in /dev/ and entered the device name to fstab, set the mount point, file system (vfat, and ntfs-3g) and set 'rw,noauto,exec,user,sync 0 0'.
This way I could mount my vfat drive read-only under /<drive name>, but not the ntfs one. After a reboot i noticed that the external drives get different IDs in /dev. E.g. what I had in my fstab under /dev/sdc1 got /dev/sdf1, and /dev/sdc was unknown. I am doing something wrong here, what worked in 11.0 does not seem to work here.

I bought a new CDROM drive, as recommended by HP. It still doesn't work. I can open and close it now; so that's changed. But it still doesn't appear as a drive, and I can't use it.
Here's as best as I can describe it:
When starting up, the boot order doesn't recognize the cdrom drive, but I can open and close the drive during this time.
In Windows 7, I can't open the cdrom drive, and it doesn't recognize it in device manager, disk management, or my computer.
In Ubuntu Linux, I can open the cdrom drive, but it still doesn't recognize the cds, and it won't mount.
If I reformat everything, would my cdrom drive work again? Can I reinstall Windows without a cdrom drive? I've deleted the upper and lower filters as was suggested in Google searches. Took the disk drive out and checked that it was installed correctly (no reason it shouldn't have been). Still: nothing works.

Discs are read by the drive when inserted (they are spun and the LED light on the drive lights up) but nothing happens after that.
I disconnected the SATA cable and tried a new SATA cable on a different SATA port and also tried a different SATA power cable but that did not fix anything.
My Ubuntu system drive is starting to throw up S.M.A.R.T. errors. I have two partitions on the drive (/home and /) and grub in the mbr. Is there a way to exactly clone this drive to another one so I don't need to reinstall or re-setup anything?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Macbook 2,1 since 2007. Last week my hard drive just died, so I decided to replace it with a new one, no problems with that. The problem came when I had to install an operative system, because my DVD drive has been broken for a year and a half now. I know we can easily install MacOSX from an external usb drive, but I don't have a big enough pendrive at the moment. So I went for Ubuntu. I have managed to get an Ubuntu 10.10 live usb stick working like charm, if anyone is interested. I just downloaded the latest i386 iso and followed this advice by pxwpxw for the 32bit EFI.
The only thing I had to change in the boot.cfg was the name of the iso and -very important- changed initrd.gz for initrd.lz. The live usb works great. But I decided to do an installation on the hard drive. I installed it using the whole hard drive and didn't get any errors. But when I boot the macbook it doesn't detect anything. I guess I need an EFI bootloader or something to make it work. I've tried to follow this guide but it seems to be intended for someone who already has MacOSX and the Ubuntu installation working. I just want to install a bootloader or whatever I need from the "outside" (from the live usb I'm using). I tried to just throw reFit into the main hard drive's root folder but it doesn't work. I think that maybe creating an HFS+ partition and installing reFit in it may work, but I don't think I can create that kind of partition from the Ubuntu usb and I also need a working MacOSX to run the enable.sh. I've also read of elilo but I've seen that it hasn't been updated for 3 years
I have two old windows 95 computers. The problem is I have files and programs that have specific settings that I need. The computers are old and I want to just make a copy of the hard drive and insert it into virtual box. How can I do this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm installing Ubuntu to be used as an NFS storage server for my VMWare ESX servers. I've got a server that has two 2TB drives in it. The hardware raid controller isn't an option because it only sees up to 1TB of each drive. So, I'm trying to figure out to do this using either LVM or Parted. I don't know much about doing this, and LVM was the first thing I tried but it didn't seem to do much. It looks like it just created a smaller partition to install Ubuntu on. It didn't ask me what I wanted to do with the rest of the drive space. I've messed around with Parted and am not sure what to do, to be honest. I found a few blog posts but most started off assuming that I knew how to get to where they were starting from.
It's just two drives, /dev/sda /dev/sdb
I am currently using windows xp, but I have acquired another hard drive and wish to install ubuntu to it, unfortunately i do not have a working cd drive. I have loaded the newest iso in daemon tools and it asks me if i want to install it in windows, or restart my computer to do a full install. i wish to do neither. i want to install a full copy to my other drive with the virtual cd drive. I have found alot of help dealing with installing it on the same drive as windows or something that would require a floppy drive. this task seems like it would be alot simpler than installing on the same drive, buy maybe not. Did i miss a tutorial somewhere?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the Fedora-15-i386-DVD.iso and want to install Fedora 15 from it. I don't want to use the LiveCD version since it doesn't have all the packages. So I follow the tutorial given here under the section titled "How to Make a bootable USB Drive to Install Fedora instead of using a physical DVD ". Everything finishes off well. However. when I boot my computer using the USB, it says "USB doesn't have operating system. Safely remove and reboot".
Now, what to do? I also didn't get the line the tutorial saying, "You should now have a bootable USB stick which will run an 15 install. When you boot the stick, you may also add askmethod to the boot line and select a hard drive install and select the drive as /dev/sdb1 (or your USB device drive) and the path should be / " What am I supposed to do?

The last time I tried software RAID 1 (dm-x) under lvm, it was very fragile. Systemd could not start it,and then an update to mdadm put a stake through its heart. So I know that does not work.
I have a 7.9 TB logical volume I've created from 8 1 TB RAID 0 devices. The volume is formatted with XFS so I can resize when ready. However, I think I want to do something that is not possible. I have 2.5 TB free on my logical volume. I'd like to shrink the volume down to be 6 TB by getting rid of 2 of the 1 TB devices in the physical volume. However pvmove seems to require free extents in order to work. Do I need to add 6 TB of storage, pvmove everything onto it, and then decommission the original 8 1 TB physical devices from the volume?

I need to add a second physical drive with Windows 7 on it to the boot options in Lilo. If it's not a config file, how do I add a second os to it ? I know that the /dev/sd[abcd] devices are created in the order they were inserted, but say you have all four plugged in at boot time, or further, they can be plugged and unplugged in real time. At times, /dev/sdf, /dev/sdg, etc. are created as well. I'm ignoring external hubs for now.
I need to know which drive is plugged into the "top port on the front panel", etc, by physical location. From dmesg I can check right after booting and get the physical assignment of a PCI device, say, PCI 0000:00:10.3, as being assigned to the EHCI usb bus. From /proc/bus/usb/devices, and the "T:" field, I have learned that the physical connectors I'm interested are known as USB Bus 1, Port=00, Port=01, Port=04, and Port=05.
From lsusb I can see all sorts of information from the USB point of view, but with no /dev/sd references.
From /proc/scsi/scsi, I can see what scsi devices have been created, with a count consistent with the number of flash drives plugged in, but no USB data.
So, I can get lots of information from the USB storage point of view, and lots of information from the SCSI point of view, but nowhere can I find how to correlate them. In other words, if I want to mount the drive plugged into a given physical slot, how can I find the /dev/sd device I need to mount? udev isn't really interesting here, because I'm just looking for the information that udev would use to answer the same question.
I've done some heaving exploring in the /sys and /proc filesystems and have not yet found where the USB and SCSI worlds intersect.
The closest I have found is (where "Port" is the physical port number from above):
This seems to have some mapping to the physical port and references a "/dev/sd[a-z]" value, but I don't know how reliable it might be, nor do I know if my having to increment that physical port by 1 is meaningful. Anyone have a simpler approach?

This works in virt-manager when I boot the physical usb device a virtual disk with a usb bus and it works flawlessly, but when I plug it into a physical machine the cdrom detects fails to mount /dev/sdb1 as fstype=iso9660.
I successfully installed OpenSUSE on a 4gb pen drive using the instructions contained within this portal. However, for the life of me I can't figure out why the persistent feature doesn't work.

I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
