OpenSUSE Hardware :: Optical Disc Drive Detected But Doesn't Work?

May 9, 2010

OpenSUSE 11.2 x86_64
KDE SC 4.4.3
Linux 2.6.34-rc6-29-desktop (from KERNEL:HEAD)
HAL 0.5.13-4.2.1
udisks 1.0.0.git20100224-11.1
ASRock G43Twins-FullHD LGA 775 Intel G43 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Samsung 22X DVDR DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223Q (connected via SATA. detected as: /dev/sr0)

Discs are read by the drive when inserted (they are spun and the LED light on the drive lights up) but nothing happens after that.

I disconnected the SATA cable and tried a new SATA cable on a different SATA port and also tried a different SATA power cable but that did not fix anything.

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue On Netbook (With No Disc Optical Drive)

Jan 2, 2010

My girlfriend has a dual boot netbook I set up for her with Vista + 9.10. Her internet service went down yesterday temporarily and she was messing around with the computer to get back online and somehow booted into the Windows Rescue Partition and began the Windows Restore process, then turned the computer off during the middle of the restore process. It's her only computer and she lives 1800 miles away. And since it's a netbook there's no optical drive.

When she boots up now, the netbook goes straight into Grub Rescue mode. I got her to try most of the commands for Grub Rescue, but most of them come back as "Unknown Command". The "LS" command works though, and she was able to get a list of partitions displayed.Does anyone know of some commands she could use try to boot back into 9.10 (assuming it's still there)? Or even boot into Windows? Specifically, is there a simple command that could be combined with "LS" to specify a partition and try to boot into it?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: K3B Doesn't Recognize Disc In Drive?

Jul 20, 2010

My K3B doesn't seem to recognise a blank CD in the drive tray.

I'm on OS 11.2, K3B & codecs from 11.2 packman, and 11.2 KDE4 factory (ie kde4.4).

When I put a blank cd in, the kde4 device notifier shows me a blank cd and offers to create a project with k3b. I create a data project & click burn, the burn dialog has a greyed out Burn button, and the media selector dropdown says please insert an empty or appendable medium.

If I eject & re-insert the disc at this point, the device notifier again tells me I've inserted a blank cd, k3b's dialog freezes for a second (seems to notice something has happened) but still does not list my cd and remains as it was before.

k3bsetup reports no problems. Burning from commandline (cdrecord) works fine. Dolphin also knows about the blank cd. I've burned to these discs before with no problems (K3B used to work quite recently, perhaps 4 or 5 weeks ago). Updates have been applied in the meantime.

Right clicking on the Audio Disc icon that appears on the desktop whenever I load a disc doesn't give me an option to Play using VLC. Is there a way to make VLC the default player for CDs?

May 22, 2010

I dont know when k3b stopped working but have just gone to burn a disk and when opening it tells me

Quote: No optical drive found. K3b did not find any optical device in your system. Solution: Make sure HAL daemon is running, it is used by K3b for finding devices.

I can boot from cd and can mount cds from within Slackware but for some reason k3b insists that i don't have a drive.

It seems like udev/hal is working fine. Also, I can't get KDE to recognize any inserted flash drive or external usb storage device inserted on demand.

Software :: Using UDEV To Automatically Run A Script On Optical Disc Mount?

Mar 1, 2010

I'm trying to get a script to run whenever an optical disc is mounted by the system but can't get it to work. I'm running Fedora 12 64bit and the drive is SATA device sr0.

Following online guides, I created a new rule file called '10-my.rules' in '/etc/udev/rules.d' which contains the following:

Code:
KERNEL=="sr0", RUN+="/usr/local/bin/myscript"

But nothing happens when a disc is mounted. The script itself runs fine manually and is clearly evident when launched so the problem must be the rule file. I've tried changing the name of the rule file in a few incremental steps from 10-my.rule to 99-my.rule to no effect.

I've gathered some information about my optical drive using the udevadm tool.
Here is the result of an info query:

Code:
P: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/block/sr0
N: sr0
S: block/11:0

OpenSUSE Hardware :: CD Drive Doesn't Work?

My CD drive is attached as secondary slave but it doesn't appear anywhere, eg. no /dev/hdd or /dev/cdrom. It is not listet in hwinfo either. I completely re-installed SuSE from network today, so it's the newest version. The drive always worked fine in SuSE 9.x and also booting the Network Setup CD worked properly.

May there be missing packages? What do I have to check next?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mount External Drive - 11.0 Doesn't Seem To Work

Aug 31, 2010

I have a hard time mounting two external drives on my Suse 11.3. When I use the device notifier gadget both drives get mounted in /media/<drive name>, the vfat drive is read-only though. However, I would like to mount both drives under /<drive name> in separate directories and rw. I looked at the devices in /dev/ and entered the device name to fstab, set the mount point, file system (vfat, and ntfs-3g) and set 'rw,noauto, exec, user, sync 0 0'.

This way I could mount my vfat drive read-only under /<drive name>, but not the ntfs one. After a reboot i noticed that the external drives get different IDs in /dev. E.g. what I had in my fstab under /dev/sdc1 got /dev/sdf1, and /dev/sdc was unknown. I am doing something wrong here, what worked in 11.0 does not seem to work here.

General :: USB Audio Detected But Doesn't Work

May 3, 2011

you have an onboard soundcard that you have or may not have disabled in the BIOS, and you intend to use headphones with a USB sound card with headphone and microphone jacks (or no mic jack, it doesn't matter), but you notice that the headphones are detected. Alsamixer provides an interface to control the volume, etc etc, but still the headphones do not work..In my case, the module snd_hda_intel was being loaded for my onboard soundcard that I had disabled in the BIOS before booting the computer for the first time, and even though I tried to "activate" the USB headset in alsamixer, I still couldn't get the headset to work.

Solution as a trial: Open a terminal, and look to the code section for what you need to type.A big missing key to my puzzle is how to simply restart and/or reload a module so that it isn't necessary to unplug and plug back in the USB device. Can't I just re-discover the USB devices? (or other such hardware, such as a PCI card, or otherwise inaccessible component?)

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Can't Make Floppy Drive Read Disc Automatically

Oct 24, 2010

Not sure if anyone uses floppy drives anymore much. I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0

and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?

Hardware :: Optical Drive - Dvd Drive With Longevity?

Apr 15, 2011

Is there any dvd drive with longevity? The boxes in this "normal" house have had 100% failures on dvd writers and readers in recent years. I'm an electronics guy and know why this happens - minute changes in the careful balance on the reading head, not helped by the facts that:

1. low grade adjustable resistors are often used

2. The range of adjustment is far too great, making it impossible to retain a stable preset value.

3. Optical diodes lose forward voltage drop over time. If they start at, e.g. 1.2V after some months or years the forward voltage will be down to 1.0V. This changes the current, hence the brightness.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: DVD Drive Not Detected?

Mar 16, 2011

I have been using Fedora for a while. I decided to upgrade, and that I wanted to do a network install, but I didn't want to go for Fedora 14 when 15 comes out in a couple of months, so when I found openSUSE 11.4 was released this month, and also supported a net install, I decided to go for that. Yesterday I downloaded the net install CD. I burnt it from Windows. It burnt and installed successfully. When I got into the system this morning, it doesn't detect my DVD drive at all. There is no device for it in /dev, nor is anything shown by /usr/sbin/hwinfo --cdrom. When I insert a CD/DVD, it (the drive) detects it, but does nothing more. If I boot to Windows, it works fine. It is connected properly (I built it myself, and upgraded the drive about six weeks ago). The DVD drive is a LG GH22LS50 SATA one, connected to the SATA3 port on a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 motherboard.I found this in dmesg:

Code:
[ 1.528777] ata2.00: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
[ 1.528789] ata2.01: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)

There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

Fedora Hardware :: Optical Drive Does Not Read Any Cd

Mar 31, 2010

I have a strange problem with my DVD player. The problem: My device seems not to read any CD (it does read DVDs). Prologue: On a previous installation I had the same problem. But after messing up with that system I made a re-install, and the problem was gone. So I wasn't concerned about the problem any longer. That would be fine, but recently I had to make a new re-install to have space for windows. (I know, I'm a sinful man) But now the problem is there again. And it even is there under windows.

Question: In how far is the hardware damaged or is it a software problem since it once worked? Hardware data:

-Systems: Fedora 12 & Vista
-Laptop: Dell Studio 1555
-Drive: Optiarc Model: DVD+-RW AD-7640S Rev: HD18

What I have been doing to fix the problem:

-I made an update of the firmware and bios with the files provided by dell
-cleaned the lenses (with a clean disc)
-checked log files (both windows and linux)

After setting udev to debug logging I received this

If I boot with the media in the optical drive, it works fine.
