Ubuntu Multimedia :: "Basic" But Flexible Graphics Viewer - IrfanView / MS Office Picture Manager?
Sep 1, 2010
I am new to Ubuntu. Overall, I really like it. However, I am having trouble finding a replacement for Windows IrfanView and MS Office Picture Manager. The idea is to simply browse, delete, resize, and rotate photos. F-Spot does OK in the editing, but I cannot delete photos as I browse through them. Also, I cannot seem to be able to find info on a viewer that will allow me to resize a group of selected photos similar to what can be done in MS Office Picture Manager (part of MS Office 2003). GIMP is great for one photo at a time...unless I am missing some of its batch functionality.
Any advice is appreciated. I mainly need a flexible tool for quickly going through photo collections, deleting, resizing, rotating, and perhaps some meta data editing (for categorizing / tagging photos).

Is it possible to view picture using ssh tunnel?
I can remotely login to a server via ssh. Is there anything out there that can 'serve' pictures ?
Someone suggests using httpd over ssh, then you can just use a browser to view pictures. However, no httpd is allowed on that server

Also, I must say I really like the feature of QuickTime in MACOS. I think Ubuntu team can improve the current GNOME desktop and provide some like that. 1. make the movie player amd image viewer dockable..window decoration, hide controls...when mouse move over the image, show transparent controls UI.
Currently the Totem, Shotwell(for me, I like F-Spot more than shtwell) and Cheese UI are very different change them, like nautilus elementary.
2. make specified UI of the Music,Picture,Movies in nautilus...such as use clutter view as default view, add extra column,eg. album, artist, starrating.

I have an office with +- 20 PC's and would like to change over to Linux. I have decided on Open SUSE for the workstations, and would like to know what will be the best server to use. The work stations are for basic everyday office tasks. The servers main function is data storage.(I would also like it to function as an email server).

On the best photo tools. I love GIMP for photo editing, but I'm looking for alternatives to the default viewer and manager (currently Shotwell) for downloading images off my camera and organizing them.

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.
It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far.
Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place?
Below is a screenshot of my computer: [URL]
This is also the first time I've installed Ubuntu on my computer, and am keen for it to work.

I have Linux Mint installed on my wife's laptop along with Wine/Office 2003. (she wants MS Office!). Here's the issue: She pulls up a word document in MS Word that has graphics in it. When she prints to her HP 2600N laser printer, the graphics do not print out. She also has blank boxes on the 2nd page that print out solid black. If we open the same document in OpenOffice, it prints fine....but she still wants to use MS Office!

I just installed 9.10, and the "File Manager" seems to not be working. I cant get ubuntu to display a background picture on the desktop, and anything I put on the desktop is not selectable. If I try to access anything under the "Places" tab, it tries to open a window, which read "opening whatever" but nothing happens. I can access files via terminal just fine.

I am using OO 3.1 on Karmic 9.10. When working with Open Office Writer and either graphics or charts, a couple of things happen. First of all, the page position moves around. For example, if I click on a graphic I have inserted or on a chart, the page on my screen may shift up or down by a half inch or so. If I click back out in a text area, the page moves back to where it was. This is very annoying. Has anyone else had a problem like this? I have tried turning off compiz completely but it doesn't fix it

I did remake my minimal installation. My window manager produces no background picture else I did add someone. So i will do it using xorg-xli. I did find the (in other cases usual) xinitrc as /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc but in only refers to an other script
and the other script (/etc/X11/Xsession) does not include some usuable steps to include easily supplementary starting commands.
Where is to do that in Debian SID actually?

OK, So whenever I need to read or write a text file, I'd always use text editor, And therefore and no need for the big and bulky open office, But now that I've un-installed it, It keeps popping up in update manager.
Is their anyway to stop receiving updates for it?

I'm trying to use Pinta Image Editor but I cannot find an option to preview the image, in a viewable size, before I work on it.
what to do in this situation? Prefferably it would be nice to view all the pictures as thumbnails.

I'm converting my parents to ubuntu, so they stop complaining about how slow there windows installation is. I've only come to one problem now. my mom is in love with this Microsoft Picture It program, where she can fix red eyes, chance colors, contrast, tints, ect. Is there a program I can get for ubuntu thats very simple like Picture it? she is extremely computer illiterate, so the easier the better.

Cheese Webcam Booth used to work fine but now it just closes after I open it, Facebook wont load my webcam (but other websites can, and I wanna take a picture. I'm using a Logitech Webcam. I don't know what kind because it doesn't say anywhere on the stupid thing, but it has a spinny thing (to adjust the focus I think) that says "Right Sound" on it, and it also has a microphone.

So some videos works correctly played in VLC (1.1.9), but some doesn't.For instance I tried to play a VMW file (the video codec for that video in particular is : Windows Media Video VC1 (WVC1) ).The file plays with sound, but the picture is just black so no video picture. Now I have the regular codec package installed and in most cases everything works fine, but for instance this video doesn't and there have been similar cases in the past aswell.

my notebook has an external monitor connected with 1280x1024 pixels.
As long as the resolution of the external monitor is set to 1024x768 I can watch video with VLC, mplayer etc.
But once I set its resolution to 1280x1024 all mediaplayer play only sound. This happens on the external screen and on the built-in screen of the notebook. The desktop is extended to the external screen.

I just installed ubuntu 10.10 in a VM and went to change my desktop to something less boring and brown. I see in the desktop wallpaper program that there are certain photos that are in clusters (like you can click the photo and the next photo will come up and so forth). If I set my desktop to this cluster of sorts will it show me the photos sequentially or will it just stick to the first one. If not, is there a way to show this cluster sequentially in my background where it would change say, every minute or so?

I just installed Mythbuntu on my old laptop (lenovo with on board graphics card). I have now the problem that when I connect the TV out to my TV the picture is flickering. It looks like the image is sometimes jumping to the left or right for a fraction of a second. This usually happens when the image is not still, ie I scroll the menue or a movie is playing. I already tried different display settings but that didn't help.

I've been using ubuntu for several years now and one thing I've always have had problems with is getting a smooth picture when viewing videos. I currently have an amd dual core 2.2ghz processor and a H3200 ati graphics card which is more than capable of playing HD and blu ray perfectly in windows. I'm running ubuntu 9.10 with the latest graphics drivers 10.2. If I can movies etc., to play without lag etc., I can finally delete my windows partition. I want to avoid using a virtual machine for now.

When I run from the terminal the error I receive is:

i'm looking for a webcam viewer/recorder that can remove the perspective distortion. (ie a square looked at from an angle becomes a trapezium). Mplayer can remove the distortion but it can only view the webcam, not record to file. Mencoder can record, but not view. But I need to view and record simultaneously (sigh). ...
