Ubuntu Multimedia :: Not Getting Smooth Picture When Viewing Videos

Mar 24, 2010

I've been using ubuntu for several years now and one thing I've always have had problems with is getting a smooth picture when viewing videos. I currently have an amd dual core 2.2ghz processor and a H3200 ati graphics card which is more than capable of playing HD and blu ray perfectly in windows. I'm running ubuntu 9.10 with the latest graphics drivers 10.2. If I can movies etc., to play without lag etc., I can finally delete my windows partition. I want to avoid using a virtual machine for now.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Video On XBMC \videos Have Sound, But No Picture?

Jul 31, 2010

I am having problems: videos have sound, but no picture.I'm using a Gigabyte motherboard with integrated ATI video, and I've read before that XBMC (and Ubuntu in general) don't like ATI too much. Is there any hope left to make XBMC work?I've tried the following:1. Fresh Ubuntu installation, default ATI drivers. Result: when starting a video, audio is okay, but no video. Also, visibly slow graphics even while navigating XBMC menus

2. Installed ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver via System->Hardware drivers. Result: significantly accelerated menu navigation, but no video still. Note: having no problems watching videos via VLC or Totem Movie Player (after downloading proper codecs)3. Fresh Ubuntu installation, then downloaded and installed ATI's proprietary Linux drivers from ATI's site (ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run). Result: yippee, I see some video, but wait: no color!! (all videos are in sepia-like mode)

4. Followed these instructions to install the unofficial ATI drivers. Result: total failure, XBMC won't even start, says something about the need to have proper hardware OpenGL acceleration.System info:GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G mobo with ATI Radeon HD 4200 onboard graphicsAMD Phenom II X2 550 processor4 gigs of DDR3 RAM Ubuntu Lucid 32 bit (2.6.32-24-generic-pae)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Firefox Smooth Scrolling And Video Flickers?

May 27, 2010

I'm using the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop 64-bit distribution. Hardware is the Dell Vostro 1015; laptop with Intel (g)45 express chipset with Intel x4500MHD graphics accelerator. Celeron 900 2.2ghz single core, 1GB RAM.

The issue is I have smooth scrolling enabled in Firefox. And whenever I scroll the page, it's very choppy/laggish/not smooth at all. When I go on ..... to watch a video, any slight scrolling will cause it to flicker like crazy. The effect reminds me of when I run Windows without installing drivers for the video card.

Now I wanted to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue, so I installed Windows7 and did the exact same thing. Everything runs smoothly, I can smooth scroll no problem, and video playbacks without any flickers whatsoever. It is a lower end laptop, which is basically for the occasional ..... and web browsing.

I will try the 32 bit edition in the meantime to see if it helps. I was under the impression that 32bit limits your maximum ram to just under 4GB. (I planned to upgrade the laptop a bit)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Use Xbox 360 For A Smooth Media Center Experience?

Oct 11, 2010

I've been looking around for the past week, but I have yet to find anything yet that provides a media center solution using Ubuntu + Xbox 360, comparable to Windows 7 + Xbox 360.

I want to drop Windows 7 completely on my media PC, and just use Ubuntu (or Linux Mint). I've tried ushare, XBMC, Moovida, and a few other apps. Either they don't support sharing, or it's difficult to configure, or it is a cheap looking solution.

Is there no way to use my Xbox 360 for a smooth media center experience, similar to how it functions as a Media Center Extender for Win7, while replacing Win7 w/ Ubuntu?

I'm even open to commercial Linux solutions, I'm just hoping to be able to drop Win7 if possible..

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Smooth 1080p On VDPAU Mplayer On Hardy 8.04.4?

Dec 5, 2010

I had a problem playing full HD videos (1080p @ 30 fps), frames dropped, CPU utilisation (on 1 of 2 CPUs) maxed out etc.As I'm still stuck on Hardy I didn't find much stuff that directly answers my question on how to play this... After hunting about a bit the following two links gave me some idea of what needs to be done, namely install a new version of Mplayer that supports VDPAU (NVidia's hardware video acceleration solution).

[URL]

Luckily I had a NVidia video card that supports VDPAU and I had installed the NVidia proprietary drivers before [URL]To check if your NVidia card supports VDPAU please look at the proprietary driver release details.

Quote from Wikipedia:

"Currently only second generation of PureVideo HD bit-stream processor in some of NVIDIA's GeForce 8 series and later graphics cards hardware that has support since the Beta device driver version 180.06.[4] Unsupported hardware from the GeForce 8 series includes the 8800GTS 320/640MB editions and the 8800GTX. Later cards based on the G9x series cores e.g. the 8400GS and the 8800GTS 512mb (G92 core) are supported."

I usually play using VLC but was put-off from trying to upgrade that to CDPAU support because of this little detail from the Ubuntu forum links above:

Quote:

"VLC is available with vdpau by way of VA-API, in this PPA:[URL]However, to install it you'll have to upgrade your precious and very touchy ffmpeg packages. There have been a couple of SONAME upgrades since Karmic's ffmpeg was released, and this will inevitably result in breakage of anything that A) uses dynamic ffmpeg, and B) is not rebuilt against the new version, ie. every package that's on your system that didn't come from that PPA."

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Minimum Graphics Requ'd For Smooth MTS (1080-50p) Video Playback?

May 21, 2011

I got a Geforce 8400GS 512MB with a 2.8 Ghz quad core system on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. MTS videos from my camcorder, which are AVCHD 28 mbit encoded don't play back smoothly using the nvidia proprietary driver (195.36.24). I compared with Windows XP, and concluded that it must be my not terribly high powered graphics card (silent, w/o fan) that must be too weak - the rest of the system is really quite fast. The software isn't really the issue either, I don't think, especially since the latest VLC under Windows XP doesn't do it, either.

Do people have experience what kind of a graphics can can power such video to play back smoothly? I am considering a 1 GB Asus Geforce GT520 with 1GB DDR3 (the 8400 has DDR2) - since it is also silent and I have a compact HTPC (a Shuttle), so shouldn't run too hot and I don't like loud fan noise.

I'm not sure if it is the larger and faster graphics RAM, or a fast graphics CPU (GT520 has 810 Ghz versus 8400GS has 500 Mhz) that will make the difference...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Superbowl 010 Online Viewing?

Feb 1, 2010

how it is possible to watch the superbowl on linux natively? I am in charge of the computers at a school for mainly american students who are studying in my country, the school wants to enable them to watch the superbowl, tehy gave me a page with system requirements which seemed to suggest that it was just a flash movie player.

However when actually browsing to the demo I was confronted with an OS warning, at first I thought it was just a "stupid" me message like Yahoo-mail telling you that they haven't tested the rich version on your OS, but when browsing there with useragent set to winXP it turns out that you need the "MoveMediaPlayer". If left with no choice I guess I will install it together with firefox in wine, but I'd much rather have a different solution, also does anyone know if this player works well in wine?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mini-lag When Viewing Video Looks Like It's A Few Frames Too Little Per Sec

It's a powerful machine and I've had no problem what so ever to watch full hd videos on windows 7 but all videos, no matter the resolution, has a very small stutter which is annoying but not making the videos unviewable. But I'd prefer not having it at all. I have tried setting the VLC video output to x11 but there is no difference. It's a screen tearing problem, that was fixed by setting the option "Tear Free" on in ATI Catalyst Control Center.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Bulk Video Converter For Viewing On The Ipod?

I've been working on a small program to perform a very specific and useful task of quickly and efficiently converting videos to go on any Apple Ipod or Iphone. This includes both classic and 5th generation Ipods as well. Ibulk is a command-line only program but incredibly easy to use and runs off FFmpeg with AAC functionality. The program comes with a Read Me file which will explain its options and instructions in concise detail. Ibulk converts several videos in its input folder to the desired H.264 or XviD video encoding to its output folder. All videos are created in mp4 format with 160Kbps 48000Hz audio sound quality (highest setting an Ipod can handle) and both video encoders at the highest bitrate an Ipod can handle with the exception of some videos which will be auto-adjusted to meet the Ipod's requirements. Ibulk is written in the native unix/linux language and so it should work on any linux distro.
