Mar 2, 2010

I have an office with +- 20 PC's and would like to change over to Linux. I have decided on Open SUSE for the workstations, and would like to know what will be the best server to use. The work stations are for basic everyday office tasks. The servers main function is data storage.(I would also like it to function as an email server).

Ubuntu :: Libre Office: Can It Read Open Office Documents

Mar 28, 2011

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).

QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?

FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

Ubuntu :: Switching From Open Office To Libre Office?

Apr 22, 2011

I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

Ubuntu :: Get KDE Office Instead Of The Regular Open Office?

Sep 14, 2010

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

[URL]

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Open Suse 11.3 Along With Win 2008 R2 OS - Error "Win2008 R2 Is Not Supported In Open Suse Installer"

Mar 6, 2011

I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

Debian Multimedia :: When Open An Open Office Document From An NFS Share It Always Opens As Readonly

Apr 27, 2010

When I open an open office document from an NFS share it always opens as readonly. This was a problem I had on Arch linux and the fix was to change the locking options in the soffice script but I've tried that fix here and it doesn't work. I've seen a lot of discussions but they all go back to changing the locking options in soffice, has anyone got any alternative fixes or one that definitely works with locking?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: "Basic" But Flexible Graphics Viewer - IrfanView / MS Office Picture Manager?

Sep 1, 2010

I am new to Ubuntu. Overall, I really like it. However, I am having trouble finding a replacement for Windows IrfanView and MS Office Picture Manager. The idea is to simply browse, delete, resize, and rotate photos. F-Spot does OK in the editing, but I cannot delete photos as I browse through them. Also, I cannot seem to be able to find info on a viewer that will allow me to resize a group of selected photos similar to what can be done in MS Office Picture Manager (part of MS Office 2003). GIMP is great for one photo at a time...unless I am missing some of its batch functionality.

Any advice is appreciated. I mainly need a flexible tool for quickly going through photo collections, deleting, resizing, rotating, and perhaps some meta data editing (for categorizing / tagging photos).

Server :: Deploy Updated .conf Files On Multiple Workstations?

Apr 28, 2011

we're about to migrate a set of workstations (ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to a new kerberos/LDAP setup. Basically, this requires the installation of some required deb packages and to copy some new .conf files over the original ones.We made a deb package having these "features":requires the needed other packages as dependenciesbacks up original conf filescopies the new conf files to the right places (i.e. /etc/krb5.conf,/etc/ldap.conf)The problem is: apt-get complains because the deb is "touching" files owned by other packages (kerberos, ldap, etc.). Therefore, the only way to skip this check is either to force apt-get to proceed or using the "replaces" directive in the deb control file, specifying the clashing packages. omething like this:

Code:
Package: <package-name>
Version: 0.9.9

Server :: Ubuntu Workstations Connects To Samba Pdc But Gets No Group Permissions?

Dec 30, 2010

The current situation:there is a samba PDC with ~50 XP workstations, all working fine for the last two years. The goal:Cycle older hardware back into production by installing ubuntu on them. These workstations must authenticate against the domain, and must automatically mount a public, a user, and a department share that contains folders with various group permissions. The added challenge:Since the office where this lan is located is closed for the next week or so, the ubuntu workstation I am testing with is connecting via a site-to-site VPN. This is soon to be mandated as a requirement anyway, so if not done now it will have to be done later anyway. I mention this since it *may* be something that could be interfering with the success of my mission, however, given what does work, I do not think this is my culprit.

What does work:Thanks to winbind, I can log into the ubuntu workstation via gdm with my domain credentials, and thanks to pam_mount my shares do mount correctly. I take this to mean my pam conf files are correct, along with nsswitch.conf.wbinfo -p, -a, -t, and -u work on the workstation. getent passwd returns DOMusers.listwbinfo -p, -t, -Y, -S, -G, -n, -s, etc, all work on the PDC. getent passwd returns a list from /etc/passwd and getent group returns a list from /etc/group.A remotely controlled windows workstation on the lan works as expected.

It appears that winbind is not able to parse the group permissions at all, not for the user, nor for the folders. The hope:is that someone can say that this problem of group permissions not being recognized has a typical cause (though several hours/days of google searching has revealed no such thing). However, I can provide a great deal of supporting information, as I have gone through documentation and testing extensively (though not extensively enough, apparently). For my own sanity, I put most things I tried into a text document so I could review it and look for errors in judgment, that doc ended up being some 1500 lines long, and doesn't include conf files. Rather than flooding this post, if someone is up for reviewing it, I can definitely make it and further supporting info available...

Slackware :: V13 Does NOT Come With Open Office

Mar 16, 2010

On tis end I have a HP G71 laptop and Slackware v13 ...For whatever insane reason Slackware v13 does NOT come with Open Office and the user has to install the program on their own. With that said, I've gone the following route, several times and with zero success ... so you tell me:

.1. <usr> d/l the applicable Open Office files
.2. <usr> unpack the files by way of tar -xvp and end up with *.rpm files
.3. <usr> Switch to the RPM directory and use rpm2tgz to convert the *.rpm files to *.tgz files.
.4. <usr> to <root> su -c installpkg ooo*.tgz and do the same with openoffice*.tgz. All seems to go well here.
.5. <root> switch to desktop directory and remove Debian, Suse and Mandriva files.
.6. <root> convert Slackware file to *.tgz
.7. <root> installpkg openoffice

Using the above noted steps all seems to go well, until after re-booting and starting up "x" as either ROOT or as a USER ... nothing! The "x" window displays show the Open Office files to be there but clicking on them, all I get is a bouncing cursor for a few seconds - then nothing!
