Sep 1, 2011I downloaded Debian Stable last night, and everything appear to go smoothly. Today, I booted up the new OS to try it out for the first time. As I was exploring a few of the features, I decided to pull up a web browser. No internet connection.
No big deal, I thought, as I searched around for a way to connect wirelessly. I couldn't find a way to do so. I consulted one of my more Linux savvy friends, who advised me to pull up the terminal and enter a command to start the network-manager. According to the terminal, no such file currently exists on my system.
This is a bit of a conundrum for me, since I am on my university campus with no ethernet cord to attempt a direct connection. Is there any way to get the network-manager onto my computer? Also, did I mess up somewhere in the installation, or did someone not package the file with CD1 for some unknown reason?

Jul 10, 2010I've just installed Slackware 13.1 and am using a VESA framebuffer on a dv5-1251nr HP laptop with standard hardware.
In bash when I browse the command history using the up/down arrow keys the input line changes rather slowly.
For example, when I am on the history command

The terminal input line deletes each character from the beginning and changes something like this:

Is instant.
The effect does not happen with VESA turned off. I've used VESA on other computers without this problem.

Jun 2, 2011I have a pull-down corner on both of my gnome-panels. If I hover my mouse over it, i even get the resize cursor, but you can't actually resize the panel. I'm also seeing them on my screenlets. See the shot below:
The pull-down corners are in the red boxes. It's very clear in the top box on the gnome-panel; it's a little harder to see in the bottom one on the weather screenlet, but it's there. I have a bottom gnome-panel, too, and it's on that one, as well. I just recently noticed them, but I'm not sure where they came from. Does anyone know how to get rid of them? It's not really causing any problems. It just bothers me because I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I've tried searching the web and the forums for a solution but I'm having a hard time finding anything because I don't know the official name for that design element.
Fedora :: Deleted Partitions From The Terminal?
Aug 9, 2009I'm trying to install windows xp on a hard drive that has fedora installed. When I booted the windows xp cd, it would get stuck on a blank black screen after displaying the words ""Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration."I searched for that problem and the solution to it seemed to be to clear the mbr. I tried doing that in fedora from the terminal using: dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda1 bs=446 count=1That didn't work. I kept getting this message:0+0 records in0+0 records out0 bytes (0 B) copied, 2.2978e-05 s, 0.0 kB/sAt this point, I backed up all my data in fedora thinking that I would delete the fedorainstallation and start anew with xp and then reinstall fedora.
I had an old slackware cd around that I thought I could use to run fdisk from and delete the partitions for fedoraen I did that I found that it wouldn't recognize anypartitions. I kept trying to print out the partition table and it would display nothing.But I can view the partition table when I run fdisk from the terminal in fedoraUnfortunately I lost the cds I used to install fedora long ago and I don't have any blank cds that I could write isos to. So, my question is would there be any disastrous consequences if I deleted the fedora partitions from the terminal while running fedora?

Jul 27, 2010I've spent the entire day trying to install virtualbox. My dkms is newest version, my gcc is newest version, my headers seem to be in order, and it still won't install. BUT that's not my problem. As I was trying repeatedly to install, I noticed it said "group vboxusers already exists". So brilliant me, thinking that was my problem, went and deleted it, and then headed to synaptics to uninstall virtualbox (again!) so that I could try to install it (again!), only to find myself locked out.
The exact message I get is

This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first.I've worked really hard on this install, and don't want to start over with a fresh one unless it's absolutely necessary.

Apr 30, 2011I've basically gone and messed up my entire desktop. The curious (idiotic) me was experimenting with the desktop, and went and somehow deleted all the panels. After 3 days of frustration, I've been unable to recover any form of menu or panel. So far, I've tried restoring the defaults from the terminal. Unfortunately, I can't open a terminal window. I can run it using Ctrl+Alt+F2, but it refuses to open any windows or run any programs. Most commands give me some form of 'cannot open display.' I can't minimize windows without losing them so my workspace is a mess, I can't run nautilus as root so I can't access Synaptic, and the list basically goes on and on.

May 1, 2011Running Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.

Aug 26, 2011I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
Ubuntu :: Deleted Files On USB Drive Not Actually Deleted?
Jun 7, 2010I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem.It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.
