Ubuntu :: Deleted VBoxUsers Group Now Locked Out Of Synaptic / Terminal

I've spent the entire day trying to install virtualbox. My dkms is newest version, my gcc is newest version, my headers seem to be in order, and it still won't install. BUT that's not my problem. As I was trying repeatedly to install, I noticed it said "group vboxusers already exists". So brilliant me, thinking that was my problem, went and deleted it, and then headed to synaptics to uninstall virtualbox (again!) so that I could try to install it (again!), only to find myself locked out.
The exact message I get is

This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first.I've worked really hard on this install, and don't want to start over with a fresh one unless it's absolutely necessary.
After installing VirtualBox, add yourself to the Vboxusers group in System -> Administration -> Users and Groups.Then re-boot your computer!Otherwise you will spend hours (like me) wondering why your USB devices are not available in your guest VM.I just did a complete install on a new, larger hard drive and had forgotten this simple fact. Doh!
I followed some badly-spelled online instructions to get rid of the last panel (because I'm using Avant Window Navigator instead), which had me do this: Ok some people realize that the gnome panel in ubuntu is very annoying and if your like me you dont want it there anymore, so you wnat to get rid of it (only suggested if you have something like AWN ), ok first push alt+f2, then in that type gconf-editor inside of it. Now in that a box should apear. Click on apps, thenGnome, then session, then required sessions. Then there should be a file called gnome -panel right click it then choose edit, then make it empty. then save it press ctrl+alt+delete, then it should not be there but if it is run killallgnome-panel, and to run it again type in gnome-panel. I did it, and now I cannot startup. ( I just get a 'busy' cursor on a blank screen.)
Ubuntu 9.04 works fine, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx without problems, it runs fine but after a while the screen starts flashing and the only way out is to reboot with ctrl-alt-del. First of all I get a pale purple screen with blocks of random colour in the middle then it goes on to flashing between two screens. In one the top half of the screen is vertical black and white stripes and the bottom half is black, in the other it is a terminal screen with this distributed across it:

On the latest occasion the text was "could not write bytes: Broken pipe" repeated all over the screen, followed by "checking battery state".
This is not a big problem, but a while ago Synaptic stopped starting from menu.I have to start terminal and there type Code:sudo synapticHow can i repair this?
In synaptic package manager when I expand "Details" tab (at the time when some software is installed or removed), I can see a terminal. I want to capture the output of terminal into a file. I tried to highlight and right click. But there is no context menu(copy, cut)
Any time i try to install anything from terminal or synaptic i get this error message saying:

If i try to open the software-center the cursor changes but it does not open. This all started when it upgraded to Karmic Koala. There might be two seperate issues but i cannot install or uninstall at all.
Urgent: on reboot, the Fedora 11 lower bars reach about 70-80%, then I get the message:

Just in case this is relevant, yesterday I spent several hours attempting (and failing) to build IcedTea in order to run a Java web service that required it. After the failure occurred, I exited Linux and went to Windows Vista to run the web service, and found that Vista cannot support 64-bit Firefox, so I rebooted to Linux, and ran make clean on the Iced Tea installation, which balked because a stamps directory could not be deleted because it was not empty; I followed this by make distclean which made the same complaint. So I manually deleted the files in the stamps subdirectory, ran make distclean "cleanly", and then rebooted to reach my current very unsatisfactory state.
I'm trying to install windows xp on a hard drive that has fedora installed. When I booted the windows xp cd, it would get stuck on a blank black screen after displaying the words ""Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration."I searched for that problem and the solution to it seemed to be to clear the mbr. I tried doing that in fedora from the terminal using: dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda1 bs=446 count=1That didn't work. I had an old slackware cd around that I thought I could use to run fdisk from and delete the partitions for fedoraen I did that I found that it wouldn't recognize anypartitions. I kept trying to print out the partition table and it would display nothing.But I can view the partition table when I run fdisk from the terminal in fedoraUnfortunately I lost the cds I used to install fedora long ago and I don't have any blank cds that I could write isos to. So, my question is would there be any disastrous consequences if I deleted the fedora partitions from the terminal while running fedora?
I've basically gone and messed up my entire desktop. The curious (idiotic) me was experimenting with the desktop, and went and somehow deleted all the panels. After 3 days of frustration, I've been unable to recover any form of menu or panel. So far, I've tried restoring the defaults from the terminal. Unfortunately, I can't open a terminal window. I can run it using Ctrl+Alt+F2, but it refuses to open any windows or run any programs. Most commands give me some form of 'cannot open display.' I can't minimize windows without losing them so my workspace is a mess, I can't run nautilus as root so I can't access Synaptic, and the list basically goes on and on.

I switched to Ubuntu a few months back and now have a problem I can't figure out and would like a little guidance. When trying to run Terminal or Synaptic I get the following error... E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
Now I have set up a terminal server at work, with Ubuntu 10.04LTS and Free NX terminal server. All works great, over all expectations. But I have some file permission problems. In the home folder I have mad a folder where files that all users should have full access to is put. The problem is that when a user puts a file there, only that user have full access to that file, other users only have read rights. How can I make it so that all files put in this folder have full rights for members in the group "staff"?
How can I create a user group that restricts Internet privileges to only members in the group, then I will assigns certain applications to join the group for access to the Internet.

I have a text file that currently has around 150 000 usernames in it. I need to somehow group them into smaller groups of 1000 and then add that value into the DB. for example user xzy group 1 (hopefully the groups will be digits incrementing)

I have a group (GROUP) with a number of users. I recently added a new user (NEW). NEW is able to read but not write group files, whereas all the other users in the group can read and write to the group files. The permissions for the group files indicate that all members of group should have write permission -rwxrwxr-x
/etc/group indicates that NEW is a member of GROUP ... GROUP:x:501:GROUP,OLD,OLD2,OLD3,OLD4,....,NEW

Don't know if it matters, but both OLD and NEW write to the GROUP files over an internet connection. why NEW can't write to GROUP files? Is there a maximum number of members in a group that I might have exceeded?
I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem.It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.
I need to create a group that has the same permissions as the users group. Can I have the new group be a member of the "users" group to inherit its permissions?
I have a number of users, categorised into various groups. I would like one of those groups ("developers") to be in the wheel group as well. I don't want to just copy the people from the developers group into wheel, because then when that group changes I'll have to change it in two places. Is there a way to specify that anyone in developers is in wheel, and have that be dynamic?
