Feb 21, 2015I deleted by mistake my /www/ directory in terminal with rm -rf command. Is there a chance to get it back? I tried with TestDisk but I can't find it.

Debian :: Recovering Data From Deleted Partition
May 16, 2010I was trying to delete a logical drive in windows xp and the damn disk management tool in windows not only deleted my other windows partition but also my linux /data ext3 partition. Now I have a unallocated space in place of these partitions. The data is still there but the entries in the partition table have been removed. So how do I recover my partition. I was trying to use the following tutorial. [URK]
I used the sudo parted /dev/sda -- and then rescue START END command and could get back the /data partition. But it gives me the following error while mounting the partition. mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7, missing codepage or helper program or other error. In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.
What does this mean. How to I fix this? Also when I try to recover my windows partition using parted it scans for a while and then does nothing. It doesnot ask for writing the lost partition in the partition table. What do I do?
Ubuntu :: Recovering Deleted 9gb 7z File
Aug 17, 2010A friend had a 320 gig hdd he wanted me to back up. I saved all the files in a folder "Documents & Settings" and even made a 7z archive out of it. I used a 1tb mybook and copied the files to it then tried to delete it. Now i had recovered the files using ubuntu, but moved them to my windows partition. When i got on windows 7 and tried to delete the directory "documents & settings" i got an error saying some files had names that were too large or something like that. So i went on ubuntu and deleted the files from my windows partition without moving them to the ubuntu partition.
Well my 1tb drive just broke so i lost the files on there. Now im trying to back the files up using ubuntu. I am running scalpel at the moment, and it hasnt found anything at all. I really dont know if i set up the configuration file right. I just started scanning my other hdd that contains the linux boot. It has just started so i am not sure if it will find anything or not.
But incase it doesnt, how do i set up the config file to find the file? There are two things i deleted off of my windows partition. a 7z file archive which was the 9GB directory "Documents and Settings" zipped, and the actual folder Documents and Settings.

Ibe faced similar cases before, and on windows ibe used Recuva with mixed resutls, but. Is there an application in linux i can install on my opensuse 11.4 box to do the same task? Can you guys recommend good linux software (available for suse) that will do this? I read about "TestDisk", but ibe never used it.

Mar 21, 2010I need to get back two avi movie files but I've deleted hundreds and any recovery might try and drop them back on my small hard disk and overwhelm it! I know the files include the word 'Archer' but I'm using Formost, which is very easy to use, but it doesn't seem to allow for the searching of specific files by name. I can recover by type ie, avi, jpeg, pdf.....
Are there any recovery programs that will list files in a table so I can pick the ones I want to recover or do a search in Terminal for my 'Archer' files?

Aug 9, 2009I'm trying to install windows xp on a hard drive that has fedora installed. When I booted the windows xp cd, it would get stuck on a blank black screen after displaying the words ""Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration."I searched for that problem and the solution to it seemed to be to clear the mbr. I tried doing that in fedora from the terminal using: dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda1 bs=446 count=1That didn't work. I kept getting this message:0+0 records in0+0 records out0 bytes (0 B) copied, 2.2978e-05 s, 0.0 kB/sAt this point, I backed up all my data in fedora thinking that I would delete the fedorainstallation and start anew with xp and then reinstall fedora.
I had an old slackware cd around that I thought I could use to run fdisk from and delete the partitions for fedoraen I did that I found that it wouldn't recognize anypartitions. I kept trying to print out the partition table and it would display nothing.But I can view the partition table when I run fdisk from the terminal in fedoraUnfortunately I lost the cds I used to install fedora long ago and I don't have any blank cds that I could write isos to. So, my question is would there be any disastrous consequences if I deleted the fedora partitions from the terminal while running fedora?

Jul 27, 2010I've spent the entire day trying to install virtualbox. My dkms is newest version, my gcc is newest version, my headers seem to be in order, and it still won't install. BUT that's not my problem. As I was trying repeatedly to install, I noticed it said "group vboxusers already exists". So brilliant me, thinking that was my problem, went and deleted it, and then headed to synaptics to uninstall virtualbox (again!) so that I could try to install it (again!), only to find myself locked out.
The exact message I get is

This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) is already running. Please close that application first.I've worked really hard on this install, and don't want to start over with a fresh one unless it's absolutely necessary.
Ubuntu :: Deleted All Desktop Menus / Panels - Cannot Open Terminal
Apr 30, 2011I've basically gone and messed up my entire desktop. The curious (idiotic) me was experimenting with the desktop, and went and somehow deleted all the panels. After 3 days of frustration, I've been unable to recover any form of menu or panel. So far, I've tried restoring the defaults from the terminal. Unfortunately, I can't open a terminal window. I can run it using Ctrl+Alt+F2, but it refuses to open any windows or run any programs. Most commands give me some form of 'cannot open display.' I can't minimize windows without losing them so my workspace is a mess, I can't run nautilus as root so I can't access Synaptic, and the list basically goes on and on.

I ran "yum update" and then hit the Ctrl+C to cancel when I realized that I need to specify a package to update, not all of them, but when the console returned suddenly I lost the connection, when I try to reconnect to the machine, it says /bin/bash not found !! even when I try to issue commands from the VPS control panel, it reports that the commands are not there
I can issue a ticket for the ISP to resolve this, but I need to know the risks before I do this, I have no backup on MySQL and 2 live web applications, although they are still running, I am afraid if I restarted the VPS everything will be gone.

May 17, 2011I have carefully made daily backups using rdiff-backup, so in the case of needing to restore I can do so.
But I deleted a directory yesterday, and made a backup in the evening. Therefore, the directory is not in the latest mirror, but in the incremental backup from yesterday.
Now I need to restore the directory. But I cannot figure out how to!
I can see the directory in yesterday's incremental backup; i.e., the following works:

Where [backupdir] is the backup (mirror) directory, and [nameofdir] is the name of the directory I'm trying to restore.
So, I have tried to restore. This is the type of thing I have tried:

Where to-restore.lst holds the name of the directory to restore (in rdiff-backup's format) and [restoredir]is where I want the restored directory to go to.
But, I get errors like:

Useful file specifications begin with the base directory or some pattern (such as '**') which matches the base directory. Well, obviously the file specification doesn't exist in the [restoredir]. That's because I'm trying to restore it! If I try to create an empty directory first, it complains:

General :: Deleted Root Directory - How To Recover System Data
Feb 27, 2010I have accidentally ended up in deleting my root directory while I blindly fired command while watching movie.
I fired following command
#rm -rf ~/<SPACE>*.out
instead of this command
#rm -rf ~/*.out
Things already done:
1) Created /root directory relogged to get some of basic settings of gnome and Desktop.
2) Things went well now when I login my desktop ,gnome environment and other things looks to be working well only prompt on my terminal has changed. I can fix it any ways.
Things I want to ask:
1) I haven't studied much about contents of /root directory to best of my knowledge is it like other user's home directory with some basic configuration files for mostly required applications. SO my question is have I lost any thing important system file or something?
2) If I have lost any important configuration or system data how can I recover it without reinstalling whole system? (My opinion about this is, It is quite possible but to do so, as far as I know capabilities of linux. But I still want comments from experts before I try any things on it because I don't want to backup my whole HDD and reinstall the whole stuff again for me and also my sister's stuff in MS.)

Oct 12, 2014I have a dual boot machine (Windows 7 and Debian). W7 and debian are on the same HD but on different partitions. The debian partition is an LVM encrypted one.
The W7 needs reinstalling, and as I understand the process will overwrite the debian bootloader (grub).
Question: Is there a way to save the current bootloader and recover it after I've reinstalled W7, so I wont have to reinstall debian from scratch?.
I plan to re-install W7 on the same partition it is now, without overwriting the debian partition.

Nov 4, 2010I'm running Debian Squeeze AMD64 with full disk encryption and LVM. After reinstalling Windows 7 I lost GRUB from the MBR. I managed to install GRUB after following this guide and using an Ubuntu 10.04 graphical installation disc, but I only get to a GRUB CLI when booting, so I can't actually choose an OS there.
I tried following this guide but I'm stuck after "# Mount the partitions to /mnt/root" and don't know what to do.
Does anyone know how I can fix GRUB so I get to choose between Debian and Windows 7 there?

Apr 25, 2010I was trying to install Debian 5.04 on a Mac G4, and in typical geek tradition, I didn't RTFM. During installation, I nuked all existing partitions, creating new to my liking. But as I learned later during the installation process, yaboot needed a NewWorld partition, so I can't boot the installation. I don't have any OSX CDs with me (this is a used G4 I purchased of craigslist) with which to create a HFS partition.I've re-run the Debian installer, which lets me create a partition that is supposed to be of type 'NewWorld', but the installer does not seem to like it or recognizes it.
