Ubuntu Multimedia :: Any Successful Use Of M-Audio 2496?
Jun 14, 2010
I have been looking for a sound card for stereo classical music. The search has been frustrating. The best-known maker is well known for games and DVDs -- special effects in other words. One card works only on 32-bit distros, not 64-bit. Other cards used to work well with Linux, but stopped several years ago, and all interested parties consider it low priority. Others are priced outside my budget.
From specs and price, the best card for me would be the M-Audio Audiophile 2496, a stereo-only card with reportedly great musical performance. But it is one of those cards that stopped working around 2007, in Ubuntu and several other distros. In the forums it appears to be caused by an incompatibility between ALSA and Pulse Audio, and involves the initialization for the ICE1712 sound chip. So several other M-Audio cards, and cards from other makers, are affected as well. Comments in the Ubuntu forum trail off inconclusively. Some partial solutions have been found that work for some people, but not for all. Some reports say that a return to ALSA or even OSS works. This is discouraging, and I will not spend $100 knowing that a failure is likely.
But the best discussion appears in the Red Hat - Fedora forum for bug 499435. The authors of the ALSA and Pulse systems get into the discussion, and in the resulting ferment, one correspondent develops a workaround consisting of a large change to a conf file, and a couple of little changes elsewhere. The description of the change is followed by several messages reporting success with the card, finally. But please note that this was NOT for Ubuntu. You may find this discussion and the fix via Google by searching "m-audio 2496 red hat". It's right at the top.
The file requiring the big change is
/usr/share/alsa/cards/ICE1712.conf
Looking into the same file in Ubuntu, I found that it contains most (not all) of the revision in Fedora. Perhaps the differences between the distros require the modification to be different. The change log for libasound2 (the package containing this file) has no discernable reference to this change, so I am left wondering about its source and validity.
Still, I am not about to spend $100 without some assurance that the money is not thrown away. So now, the question for which this entry was written: Is anyone out there successfully using an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card with the current release of Ubuntu (10.04 or 9.10), using Pulse, ALSA, or OSS? Everybody posts tales of woe. I'm hoping to hear a few tales of success.

I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 that uses the ice1712 alsa module. This card has always worked flawlessly in every previous version of opensuse. Now in opensuse 11.2, I'm having problems.
KDE System Notifications sound comes out fine. But I can't get any sound from Flash videos or from Amarok. This is with a clean installation of opensuse 11.2 using the 64bit DVD. No matter what I try, I can't get sound to play through this card, except the System Notifications. When I click on "Test" in the "Multimedia" section of KDE's "Configure Desktop", sound comes out fine. The backend currently in use with Phonon is "Xine". I also tried "Gstreamer", with no success.
If I use my motherboard's onboard sound (ALC889 chipset, using the hda ALSA module), then everything works fine. Sound is present everywhere and everything functions as intended.
I tried disabling the motherboard's onboard sound altogether in the BIOS, but that did not fix the problems with my M-Audio card. I need my M-Audio card for audio capture, among other things.

I've just installed Xubuntu last night on a spare drive because I really wanted to try it out. Install and initial setup (upgrades, extras and so on) worked like a charm, then I got to burn an audio cd with Brasero starting from some mp3s floating around my external media drive. The burn process itself went good and the CD is fully readable, but I notice that CD-text is missing.
So, when I added files to the main window of Brasero id3 tags were there (I've seen them, plus I set each and every of them via Easytag before putting the files in my external media drive so I'm sure of that), but once the CD was finished there was no CD-text at all. Maybe I just have to download some additional packages which aren't included in Brasero or have missed some menu item about CD-text?

I tried four cdrs and I can't get my dvd rom or dvd-rw to list the contents even though k3b says it was successful. If I open k3b it see the cdr and say sessions 1 appendable yes. I burned the cdr as multisession. I can only view the contents of the cdr by doing a continue multisession while in k3b. I'm using squeeze and kde.

I have just purchased this audio card. It is a common audio card for home studio musicians or wannabees. Pulse Audio uses the ICE1712 [Envy24] PCI Multi-Channel I/O Controller for this card. In the "Sound Preferences window the hardware selections are only variations of digital options. The gui (software) to control this card is the "Envy24 Control" which can be found in "Specialist tools for ALSA" package. With this package you have options to control the digital to analog conversions necessary.
I cannot active the analog inputs and outputs of this card. S/PDIF outs function but I can not use them to input to my Dynacord mixer.

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.
I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:
Code:
So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:
dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.
okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

I am having some issues with getting Ubuntu Studio 10.04 to work correctly on my system. Everything works fine except sound. I have a M-Audio Delta 66 audio interface and my onboard sound is disabled. When I run the command alsaconf I can see the ICE1712 card without issue. However when I run alsamixer the only option it is giving me is my HD sound from my ATI video card. For some reason it seems the ATI card has locked the audio to it with no way to remove it. I have reinstalled the alsa drivers for my card and can only see it through alsaconf. When I tell alsaconf to configure the ICE1712 card it says it configured it properly.When I run the command envy24control it says no ICE1712 cards were found.

Is there an application that anyone knows about that I can use to convert either an .flv or .ogg file that contains both audio and video to just an audio .ogg file (preferably vorbis+theora) without audacity? I'm fairly certain audacity could accomplish this but it seems like overkill for what I'm trying to do and the computer I'm trying to use does not run it so well.
::EDIT:: I should also mention that I've tried looking on google. I did find downloadhelper extension for firefox which uses ffmpeg to convert the files but I don't see any obvious way to strip the video.

I know, as of 2008, no support, but I'm wanting LTS so I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10. I'm trying to use 7.04,s CD/DVD creator to burn the Iso to a CD. I've tried desktop, and alternate, both by bittorrent, and every time I attempt to burn to a disc, it takes 10 minutes with useless spinning, saying "Preparing to write disc" and then it stops, locking the CD drive and having me to restart the system to get it running again. I've run on 2.0x, 1.0x, and 8.0x, all failing. I could really use help. I'm running a Dell Dimension 4500S, Pentium 4, 512MB ram, with a Cyberdrive CW058D CD-R/RW, SCSI, and IS a burner.

Thought that I would share my story of trying to get a USB thumbdrive to boot ubuntu on my MacBook Pro. I originally bought a 32Gb flash drive thinking that it would be as simple as throwing ubuntu on and pressing go. I soon found out the hard way that Apple won't let you boot BIOS(Legacy) OS's from a thumbdrive. A long learning curve later, I could successfully boot the ubuntu Kernel from my thumbdrive alone. I partitioned my drive into 4 partitions an EFI boot partition(1) a fat32 boot partition(2) an ext4 filesystem(3) and a HFS+ rEFIt partition(4).
After following the steps put forth on [URL] I was able to configure grub to properly load the ubuntu kernel, however, it would crash every time I tried booting. I edited my grub.cfg file to load /bin/sh on startup, and that got me to boot into an SH shell, but nonetheless startx would not properly load. A headache and a half later, I discovered that ubuntu does NOT like being booted from EFI. I could have continued these shenanigans and tried to get ubuntu to boot using EFI, but I took the lazy route out.
Apple does not let you boot USB from BIOS, but it does, however, let you boot CD's from BIOS. I burnt a copy of the "Super GRUB2 Disk" from [URL]. Poped it in my CD tray, held 'C' when booting, grub2 loaded, pressed 'detect os' and it booted. Everything works great, video drivers, usb drivers, everything is exactly like if ubuntu was on my HD, and to be honest the speed is GREAT - I would almost go far enough to say that it is faster than booting from a HD, the only issue is that without a SWAP partition, the memory fills up rather fast, and sometimes you have to wait for that to catch up.
To recap:
Step 1: Install Ubuntu to a thumbdrive just like you would a HD
Step 2: Burn the "Super GRUB2 Disk" from supergrubdisk
Step 3: Hold 'C' when booting -> detect OS's
Step 4: Boot from Ubuntu on you Flashdrive, Enjoy!

I'm having a strange issue with a RHEL 5.2 system with SE Linux. I can scp files to it, but I always have to hit ctrl+c to end the scp process. The file transfers 100% and everything, but scp just hangs there for a long time, or until I kill it. If I wait until it dies on its own, its exit value is 1. I'm not sure if it'll help, but here is the output when I add the verbose option. $ scp -v create_users.sh rhel5.2-server: Executing: program /usr/bin/ssh host rhel5.2-server, user (unspecified), command scp -v -p -t .

After that, if I restart, the only OS option to boot from is Windows.
NOTE: I installed 9.10 using frugal more (no cd, no usb, but rather live from hard drive.)

Problem: Ubuntu freezes up 30 seconds or so after a successful login.
Background:I am running a Compaq Presario SR5030NX. It has had issues for a while with running Ubuntu properly. My computer suffers from this bug. I have managed to get the LiveCD running by adding the following to my boot parameters:
Code:
vga=792 i915.modeset=0
When I was running the LiveCD I found that it would freeze after about 30 seconds. I solved this problem by again changing the boot options. This time I:Press F6
Check noapic, nolapic, and pci=noacpi
I then proceeded to install Ubuntu.
My problem arose when Ubuntu did not modify grub.cfg to match the setting I needed in order to boot. I managed to modify in some of the settings correctly, I believe at least, but not all of them.
In its current state Ubuntu is able to boot, but freezes 30 seconds or so after a successful login. If I do not graphically login, I do still have access to VTY1-6. The machine does not freeze until a successful graphical login has been made.
Below is the relevant section of my grub.cfg:
Code:
menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,2)
code....
On another note:
The liveCD I have been running for 6 months is BackTrack 3 Final. Which does not have this issue at all. I would wager a guess that BackTrack 4 does though as it is based off Ubuntu instead of Slax.

I just installed lucid, Ubuntu 10.04. The first time I screwed it up by removing the CD to early. Do not remove CD until the tray opens by itself or until the system restarted. The second attempt took only 21 minutes. The only input required from me was the time zone, my name and password. After it restarted I had to right click on the network icon and enter the name of my router (Belkin) and the open "edit connections" and enter the network password. All done.
I did have one questionable moment though. When I clicked on "restart" I got a black screen with this message scrolled all the way down the screen...
"(123.2#####) end request: i/o error, dev sr0, sector 46####".
The pc was froze up, or at least stalled at this point. I hit the reset button and all was well. Is a repair recommended or was that just a technicality that really meant nothing? I intend to continue this thread with updates as I reload all my garbage.

Although, on PC boot-up, no dual-boot option appears.Can I assume a dormant Ubuntu installation on this partition?

After 8 years of using Mac, which I do enjoy, I decided to jump into the open source community. So I bought a brand new Thinkpad SL510 and installed Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) using the entire disk, thus erasing Windows.
The installation process was very easy and the system generally works great. It's fast and I love the interface.
Just encountered one annoying issue which I don't think I should be confronted with, using a freshly installed Unix-based OS: a few times, the system entirely froze. I couldn't move the mouse pointer anymore, the keyboard no longer responded (eg. when hitting Shift Lock the light didn't come on). Waited for several minutes but nothing happened at all. So I had to turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button.
This has only happened a few times so far, but a few times too many. When it happened, I only had Firefox open, or Firefox and Twinkle. The last time it happened, the screen colours gradually went gray before everything came to a halt.
