Ubuntu Installation :: Unetbootin Successful - No Boot Option There?
Jan 30, 2010
I installed ubuntu on my v13 (SU7300 model, not the ubuntu model) using unetbootin.Installation was successful, but when I restart, the boot loader only gives me the option of starting Windows.I can still use unetbootin until I start windows and uninstall it. After that, if I restart, the only OS option to boot from is Windows.
NOTE: I installed 9.10 using frugal more (no cd, no usb, but rather live from hard drive.)

System is hanging during boot after a successful fresh install via netinstall disk. Never makes it to any GUI or prompt. However, it does still respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL (not completely frozen).Default debian installation with one exception - KDE checkbox was checked for installation. Everything else was default, with "use full disk with GRUB" option chosen. The boot process appears to hang during the service starts. It appears that the start job for "Create Static De..." is not actually ever completing. I don't know how to troubleshoot that any further than I have.
This is running on hardware, it is not a virtual machine. 480GB SSD, i7, 16GB of RAM, AMD R9 390 (I dunno if this is the problem, but it seems a likely culprit). There are no other disks attached. I have verified successful memtest completions (0 failures) and hard disk is intact and working fine (I have swapped for another disk, and the same thing happens as well).
My skill level with Linux is relatively low. I have proficiency using it and programming for it, but not much in the way of troubleshooting/ installation/ drivers.
Here is an album of "screenshots" (phone photos) of the boot sequence in debug: URL....I tried booting straight to console by removing "quiet" from boot options and changing to "text", but it does not alter the outcome in any discernible way.

I installed Debian Jessie (netinst, daily snapshot) on my Acer Aspire V5-123 laptop in the UEFI mode with the secure boot turned off. everything (network, hardware, partitioning, ...) went smoothly to the last step, but after removing the boot media (USB stick) and rebooting, the firmware could not find the boot device ! The only thing I can think of, is that the EFI boot is not set up properly by Debian installer, but I don't know how to fix it.

Alright so I'm currently in the process of trying to transfer a wubi install of ubuntu to an actual partition using LVPM. I need to use unetbootin with parted magic mounted (not sure if that's the right term) to my hard disk rather than a bootable flash drive. So I set everything up, downloaded parted magic ISO, ran unetbootin and selected the file everything installed smoothly. I then restart my computer and unetbootin is indeed in the boot list but when I select it, it remains at a black screen. I left it at the black screen for about ten minutes and nothing happened. I've tried a few times and nothing.

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I'm using Ubuntu Maverick which seems to run ok. The problem is when booting my PC. Often it takes anywhere between two and six attempts to boot before a successful boot. Sometimes it fails with "No signal" before it reaches the grub screen, sometimes is passes grub only to fail 15 secs later with a "No signal".I have an NVidia Ge Force 6600 LE graphics card, with the latest driver 260.19.06.

I have an Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi laptop, that I purchased 5 years ago. It has the following:AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile Technology TL50 (1.6GHz, 512 KB L2 cache)ATI Radeon Xpress 1100120GB PATA HDD hard drive (60 gigs for the C: drive FAT32, 60 for the D: drive, NTFS)I have Windows XP Media Center edition installed on my pc, and I want to install linux. This is my first time installing linux on anything. My laptop's cd drive doesn't work, so I wanted to boot from a USB or from hard disk. I googled around and found unetbootin, which I ran. When I ask it to use the hard disk, I select Debian stable and the one where it loads everything up beforehand, not the netboot. This is because the netboot option wasn't working - it gave me a similar problem. Anyways, I boot up, and I have a choice between unetbootin and windows xp. When I choose unetbootin, it says:
Booting 'Unetbootin'
(hd0,1)
Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xc

I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.
I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.
My system details are:
HP compaqnx9000
Mobile Intel Pentium(R) 4-m CPU 2.20 GHz 219GHz 704MB RAM
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7580A
Radeon 1GP 340M

Thought that I would share my story of trying to get a USB thumbdrive to boot ubuntu on my MacBook Pro. I originally bought a 32Gb flash drive thinking that it would be as simple as throwing ubuntu on and pressing go. I soon found out the hard way that Apple won't let you boot BIOS(Legacy) OS's from a thumbdrive. A long learning curve later, I could successfully boot the ubuntu Kernel from my thumbdrive alone. I partitioned my drive into 4 partitions an EFI boot partition(1) a fat32 boot partition(2) an ext4 filesystem(3) and a HFS+ rEFIt partition(4).
After following the steps put forth on [URL] I was able to configure grub to properly load the ubuntu kernel, however, it would crash every time I tried booting. I edited my grub.cfg file to load /bin/sh on startup, and that got me to boot into an SH shell, but nonetheless startx would not properly load. A headache and a half later, I discovered that ubuntu does NOT like being booted from EFI. I could have continued these shenanigans and tried to get ubuntu to boot using EFI, but I took the lazy route out.
Apple does not let you boot USB from BIOS, but it does, however, let you boot CD's from BIOS. I burnt a copy of the "Super GRUB2 Disk" from [URL]. Poped it in my CD tray, held 'C' when booting, grub2 loaded, pressed 'detect os' and it booted. Everything works great, video drivers, usb drivers, everything is exactly like if ubuntu was on my HD, and to be honest the speed is GREAT - I would almost go far enough to say that it is faster than booting from a HD, the only issue is that without a SWAP partition, the memory fills up rather fast, and sometimes you have to wait for that to catch up.
To recap:
Step 1: Install Ubuntu to a thumbdrive just like you would a HD
Step 2: Burn the "Super GRUB2 Disk" from supergrubdisk
Step 3: Hold 'C' when booting -> detect OS's
Step 4: Boot from Ubuntu on you Flashdrive, Enjoy!

I already have the .iso file and an 8GB flash drive but everytime i try to use unetbootin, it says installation is complete and my flash drive is ready to use (all this took only 5 secs! weird!). And when i open my flash drive, nothing is there and the used space is 80KB...its really empty

I have a MSI a6000 Laptop (that has given me a lot of problems installing Ubuntu.
I finally had to run Ubuntu from a CD in nomodeset
Then when I go to install Ubuntu the only options it gives (regarding my harddrive) are to format my whole hardrive or do the partitioning. I have seen screenshots though where there is a third option on the same page to install ubuntu alongside a prior OS and dual boot.
Does anyone know why the "install alongside a prior OS (dual boot)" option doesn't show up?

My old HDD died. I have 10.10 installed on a usb stick. This is a full installation not a LiveCD. I downloaded the live CD and Unetbootin.
Can I use unetbootin to create a bootable 'LiveCD' onto a partition of my new hard drive?
Without a CD drive, I can't think of any other way to get an installation onto my new HDD
EDIT - got ubuntu installed but had to do it at work, so i am still curious as how one would proceed with only a USB (full installation) and a blank HDD with no access to any other computers.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP Media Centre Edition system. On the Step 4 of the installation which usually gives you the option to partition the disk but it only gives me the option to Erase the entire disk or specify partition manually, although this also doesn't allow anything other than totally erasing the disk. I'd ideally like to keep my Windows and I have installed Ubuntu before (but 9.10) on a different system.

But upon restarting, i wasnt give the option to boot ubuntu. It just keeps loading windows. I went back to my bios and chose to boot from both hd's, but nothing is happening. With the hd with ubuntu on it, it wont load up.

I was wondering to restore on old laptop to working order. This laptop is an old early 2000's Sony Viao, which I found in the trash. Still powers on, and can boot the latest Ubuntu LiveCD. The issue is that it did not have a harddrive in it, and I really do not want to shell out money for a drive for a laptop this old, but would still like to bring it back into service as a thin client or general purpose web/email terminal. The BIOS does NOT have a USB boot option, and every tutorial I have seen requires that in order to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick (which is what I do have). What I am wondering is, is there any way to just keep the LiveCD in the drive and use that to boot the kernel, etc, and then have it look for the rest of the filesystem on the USB stick?

My misses wanted XP putting back onto her laptop, which had Ubuntu 10.04 installed using the whole drive. So I created a partition for it, and install XP onto it, but now it now longer gives me the option to choose between Ubuntu or XP. I know I need to reinstall GRUB but I am not sure on how to do it. Can anybody give me a step by step guide on how to do this please?? The simplest the better because I am not too hot on Ubuntu, unfortunately.

I'm in exactly the same sticky state. Was running my new Ubuntu 10.10 build alongside my original Windows 7 partition, but now the Windows 7 boot option has disappeared following a trip to the update manager Tried the Update Grub2 command to no avail. (e.g. sudo update-grub) What is weird is that I now have two Ubuntu boot options i.e.
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-23-generic"
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-23-generic" (Recovery Mode)
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic"
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic" (Recovery Mode)
"Memtest86+"
I ran the same boot_info_script from as per a similar post (and above) in the hope you wizened peeps may see something I clearly can't. p.s. I'm as noob as they come and fearful of most areas of linux at this point.

No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

I gave up on XP - not the place for long sob stories - and decided to try Ubuntu. I know nothing, so I chose the 10.04.1 because it said stable... made a CD, took it to the problem computer, tried several times to load, then noticed that "Wubi" loaded from windows. I hunted down a 10.04.1 Wubi, and it seemed to read rather well. No error messages, told me to remove the disc. I did, told me to reboot. I chose ubuntu and it froze with the words :
Completing the Ubuntu installation:
For more installation boot options, pres 'Esc' now...

I waited, nothing. I put the CD in, nothing. Now what?
