View 2 Replies View Relatedsince updating my laptop to 10.04, I can't get any sound out of my headphones. If I plug the jack in, the sound from the loudspeakers turns off, but the headphones stay quiet.
I have run alsamixer and in fact the volume for the headphones is stuck to zero, and it's not possible to increase it.

What I find funny, is that amixer reports that I don't have the capability of regulating the headphone volume:

I have also used the AlsaUpgrade script to get the latest version of alsa, but it still doesn't work.
i read through and spent an hour trying to fix my maudio mobile prei tried uninstalling and reinstalling alsa. i tried getting a new updated also from their site and installing it.and no luck. put the error message i got from trying to run alsamixer in the title.i dont know why it says that there are no alsa drivers when ive tried to install them 2 different ways

At Ubuntu 10.04, I amplified sound maximally using alsamixer and volume icon on the menu bar but I want to amplify further.
VLC can amplify sound upto 400% but only inside VLC.
Are there any such program to amplify sound in general at Ubuntu 10.04?
When i installed Ubuntu, everything worked fine, sound drivers installed automatically and volume was perfect.Then one day as I was talking to a friend on skype, I tried changing the output to speakers from my headset during the call and i didnt get any output. I tried changing a few settings, can't remember which ones exactly until I noticed someone had pulled the audio cable from the back of my PC. I replaced it but I started getting very very low sound.I found out about alsamixer and when I ran it, I found that the volume on that device was turned down, i turned it up and voila! sound back to normal.However, now when I reboot, my sound goes down again. I have tried deleting the asound.state file and running the save command, "sudo alsactl store 0" I think, as someone suggested, but no cigar.

My speakers and headphone works fine but my microphone is not working, a common problem. Usually i solve it through alsamixer. However my Alsamixer shows only " Master PCM S/PDIF Capture " (see pic)! And no microphone option. Does anyone knows what is going on?

I was having trouble with using my T500's internal microphone, and I figured out that if I run alsamixer in terminal, and if I increase the level of "internal mic," then it works fine. Now the problem is that it seems periodically the setting reverts and I lose the mic volume and I have to re run alsamixer and do the setting again.
Is there any way I can set this setting in KDE, and preserve the setting once it is done?
How can I stop Mplayer from messing with my alsamixer settings?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a Toshiba L650, Debian testing/unstable, KDE4.4.5. The sound worked when I first installed everything (played a movie in dragon player, etc), but shortly thereafter it stopped working. It seems like the hardware is okay (all hardware is recognized, all relevant modules loaded, volume in alsamixer at 100%, the system beep -- set in the BIOS -- works), but I still can't get sound to play. Once or twice, right before KDE shutdown, I could hear the exit sound, but that's it. Last night I exited KDE (without hearing a sound), shutdown kdm, then:
mv $HOME $HOME.backup
mkdir $HOME
and restarted kdm and kde...still no sound! I created another user, and still no sound!
I have a Creative SoundBlaster live SB0490 USB sound card. Alsamixer only shows a mic channel for this card although it has a line in. Is this because it is not supported or how it is meant to be? I have problems with no audio out on a program which directly accesses the card as hw:1 although it is actually using it and wonder if this is all related. Strangely I can play sound through the card using rythmbox.

I can't get flash controls to work. If the video auto-plays, it starts just fine, if not, I'm out of luck. I've tried reinstalling flash through the software center. Even if it autoplays, I can't control volume or pause or anything. I'm at the mercy of whatever is already there. I have both a 64bit 10.04 install with firefox 3.6.6 and flash player 64bit version 10 and a 32bit 10.04 netbook edition with firefox 3.6.6 and flash player 10.1. They both are missing the overlay controls.Here's an example link:The pbs kids site has the "BIG" button which allows me to go fullscreen, but then I just get audio on the 64bit machine. I haven't tested that on the netbook version yet.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHow do i change the channel gnome-volume-control controls? I want it to control pcm but it controls master front. There used to be a setting right in the sound preferences but i think it disappeared with the 9.10 upgrade or at least i can not find it anymore. I've looked on the at gnome alsa mixer while changing the volume and master front gets controlled while pcm is always set to max. The problem with this is that master front does almost nothing to change the actual volume.
If i control pcm with the alsa mixer the volume range is fine. I've found a manual for gnome-volume-control on [URL].en and the pic there actually looks like i remember it looking. But i can not get to that screen. What i have looks completely different. Its a window with the tabs Sound Effects | Hardware | Input | Output | Applications. But there is no sight of any channel settings and the only slider there does the same as the applet one.
Im running 11.3 w/ KDE 4.6. I was using Kmix today without issue and accidentally (perhaps out of curiosity) clicked the 'close' box on the tab which presented all of the volume controls. The thing is, I cannot seem to find out how to recreate it. I seem to recall there was some option to create multiple volume control tabs, but I cannot locate.
Could someone point me in the right direction on how to recreate the tab or delete the kmix settings/config which I assume would re-create defaults?
After trying to unsuccessfully install OSS4, it seems I've broken ALSA and have no sound. I've uninstalled the oss4 packages and rebooted, and now alsamixer reports "cannot open mixer: no such file or directory". Here's the output of aplay -l: List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices aplay: device_list:244: snd_ctl_pcm_next_device PulseAudio also doesn't find any hardware devices, though it is able to play to the Apple Airport Express down the hall. I'm running 10.04 64-bit on a Thinkpad X61.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.

On a Lenovo Thinkpad R400
When I load up Ubuntu and I open any of my music players and click on a song in the library the song wont load until I go into Places>(hdd with music). Is there any way I can load this hard drive and the other hard drive I have without having to first open in in the Places menu? The same problem goes for pictures I have stored on another hdd. I can't load them in Picasa until I have first opened the hard drive through the Places menu. I would like these to be read from start up so that I can skip this step.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just switched from XP to Ubuntu 9.1 on a relatively old computer (6-9 years?) yesterday, and everything worked like a dream. I've used my computer twice today and nothing seemed to be going wrong...but then came the problem. I haven't toggled with the settings too much since I'm still very new to Ubuntu, but whenever I log in with my password, the GUI doesn't automatically start up. I get the terminal in the right left-hand corner instead, and none of the fixes I've found so far have worked. I usually get some variant of an error message or my hostname doesn't exist.
I've tried:

I've got a lot of computers, and have some with Windows7. One is 32 bit, and the other 64 bit Windows7. I've used Ubuntu for a while. I think my first live CD was from 2006. I have 2 computers that run Ubuntu as their only operating system, and have had a Ubuntu web server. For some reason, when I try to run a live CD on either of these Windows7 machines, install hangs. I've tried different CDs, and even different versions of Ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Matlab into /opt/matlab and the file to run the program is located in /opt/matlab/bin and is called matlab. I created a file:
#! /bin/bash
/opt/matlab/bin/matlab
and placed it in /usr/bin.
From there, I can run matlab by typing 'matlab' in a Terminal window. My problem is that I created a link in my start menu with the command 'matlab' but all I get is the splash screen for 5-10 secs then the program crashes out. However, when I run it from a Terminal, it loads up just fine.
After to trying make a Multiboot live USB using MultibootSystem, my Ubuntu (10.10 install in Windows 7) is not booting anymore. I have moved the folder c: ubuntu (to saved my data) uninstall Ubuntu and reinstall it still nothing. I have the grub but when I select Ubuntu I have the following error message:
