Debian Multimedia :: Sound Volume Low Despite Alsamixer At 100 Percent
Aug 1, 2010
I've got a Toshiba L650, Debian testing/unstable, KDE4.4.5. The sound worked when I first installed everything (played a movie in dragon player, etc), but shortly thereafter it stopped working. It seems like the hardware is okay (all hardware is recognized, all relevant modules loaded, volume in alsamixer at 100%, the system beep -- set in the BIOS -- works), but I still can't get sound to play. Once or twice, right before KDE shutdown, I could hear the exit sound, but that's it. Last night I exited KDE (without hearing a sound), shutdown kdm, then:
mv $HOME $HOME.backup
mkdir $HOME
and restarted kdm and kde...still no sound! I created another user, and still no sound!

My microphone wasn't working so I entered alsamixer to amp up it's volume and see what's wrong. Not sure what I did wrong but now the gnome volume control applet in the Indicator does not affect system volume at all.I can even mute it and it will not mute anything. The volume controls in alsamixer work fine and changing the volume in alsamixer affect system volume immediately. What could I have done? How can I get back volume control inside gnome?

since updating my laptop to 10.04, I can't get any sound out of my headphones. If I plug the jack in, the sound from the loudspeakers turns off, but the headphones stay quiet.
I have run alsamixer and in fact the volume for the headphones is stuck to zero, and it's not possible to increase it.
My hardware config is posted here: [URL]
What I find funny, is that amixer reports that I don't have the capability of regulating the headphone volume:
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Capabilities: pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Mono:
Front Left: Playback [on]
Front Right: Playback [on]
I have also used the AlsaUpgrade script to get the latest version of alsa, but it still doesn't work.

When i installed Ubuntu, everything worked fine, sound drivers installed automatically and volume was perfect. Then one day as I was talking to a friend on skype, I tried changing the output to speakers from my headset during the call and i didnt get any output. I tried changing a few settings, can't remember which ones exactly until I noticed someone had pulled the audio cable from the back of my PC. I replaced it but I started getting very very low sound.I found out about alsamixer and when I ran it, I found that the volume on that device was turned down, i turned it up and voila! sound back to normal. However, now when I reboot, my sound goes down again. I have tried deleting the asound.state file and running the save command, "sudo alsactl store 0" I think, as someone suggested, but no cigar.

At Ubuntu 10.04, I amplified sound maximally using alsamixer and volume icon on the menu bar but I want to amplify further.
VLC can amplify sound upto 400% but only inside VLC.
Are there any such program to amplify sound in general at Ubuntu 10.04?

I am not getting any sound with rythembox. My sound levels are mute with some of the bars in alsamixer. I do not know how to adjust the bars to unmute, or to raise the sound once unmuted.

We had to reboot a server in the middle of a production day due to 99% iowait (lots of processes in deep sleep waiting for disk iops). That's never happened to us before. It had been 363 days since the last fsck, so it started automatically on reboot. It hung at 4.8% on a 2TB LVM2 volume for about an hour. I killed the fsck and rebooted the server. The second time, it went past that point and is currently at about 62%. First, what causes e2fsck to hang like that? Second, is there any danger in killing e2fsck, rebooting, and starting it again?

I've just switched to slackware from opensuse (and before ubuntu) for few days. Everything is ok , no, is awesome when I was doing my job on run level 3. However, I found there was no sound when I booted it to run level 4 (xfce) trying to play some music on yesterday. After googled a lot, I thought there must be some wrong with my alsa driver, because I couldn't adjust the PCM volume from either alsamixer or amixer. In fact, there is even no PCM section in it, but two sections named "IEC958" and "IEC958 D" instead with no "pvolume" capability. Here is some outputs:
Code:
bash-3.1# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xefffc000 irq 21
[Code].....
ps: I've reinstalled alsa-lib, alsa-oss, alsa-utils from the installation dvd, no use

I'm running squeeze (last updated today), and everything has been working great. There is only thing that would simplify my life minutely..Anybody know how can I have the volume buttons on my laptop change the "pcm" channel volume rather than "master"? If they could control pcm, then I could adjust the volume coming out of my headphones or my computer speaker (both controlled by pcm, but not master...seems strange to me) with just one click.I tried to find this info online, but all results seem to refer to an older version. The simple "click here, set this" solution no longer is possible.

I ran openSUSE way back since version 7.3, before that I was on Redhat 6 and briefly at 5 before that. I know my way around Linux pretty well but two problems with Fedora are bothering me right now. I'll begin a separate thread for each one to keep things clear. The first problem is with sound. I remember having problems with the Intel ICH7 chipset and pulseaudio on openSUSE, but the problem I have with Fedora is different. Sound works, but each time after rebooting, I have to open alsamixer to turn the master volume up from zero. Being an openSUSE user, I am comfortable with KDE, so I am running KDE 4.6.1 as my DE.Two sound devices have been detected, one is the Intel soundcard, which is recognized as snd_hda_intel. The primary sound device, according to alsa, is my Logitech UVC cam.

Debian Squeeze 6.0.0 on a Thinkpad T43, sound volume is not synchronized between the laptop volume buttons and GNOME's Volume Applet. So if I turn the volume all the way down with the physical buttons, the volume applet may still indicate 75%.I did not have this problem in Debian Lenny. Pressing the volume buttons used to show a volume bar on the screen, as did pressing the mute button.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio EC laptop. I am having problems with my volume being very low under Ubuntu, even if I turn all the options to full, I can barely hear it. This happens both through the built in speakers and through headphones. I know it is not a hardware problem since both work fine in Win7 dual boot. Also, this problem occurs both in Rhythmbox and chromium.

I had a problem with sound, but after googling and installing a couple of files, I finally got sound from ..... and in aqualung. However, still nothing from audacious or amarok. When I open them with a terminal, there are no error messages. In audacious, the visuals show that the song is playing...the volume is at 100%, but no sound. Same with amarok.

I use headphones and have an MCP73 sound device; am running OpenSUSE 11.4.
On each restart, I get no sound. I have to go to YAST, Hardware, Sound, Other, Volume. The 'Other channels', Front slider is at 0%. If I slide it up to 100%, my headphones start working. At this point the Help text says to press 'Next' to save the settings, but there isn't a 'Next' button...just a Cancel and OK. OK keeps the new setting, but apparently doesn't save it permanently.
What can I do to avoid having to reset this slider every time ?

I recently purchased an external USB audio card [URL] All worked fine except the volume that comes out is BLASTING, and changing the master volume does nothing. Individual applications let me change their volume, but this is extremely anoying and often leads to me accidently blasting the room.

This is my third Ubuntu installation, and even with identical hardware, sound volume is dramatically less than under Windows. I turn every slider up all the way, and it is still less than half as loud as Windows.

When the opening little music plays during start up, the first half of it is loud, but halfway through, the sound cuts to about half volume. Everything else afterwards is also very quiet. After boosting the volume output to 150%, and boosting VLC's audio output to 200%, the audio is still barely audible on my laptop. I've gone into alsamixer, and it's at max. I once found how to reset the audio card, and the sound was normal again, but only until I shut the laptop off, and next time, it was the same as always.
I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, and using an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. Don't know what my sound card is.

I just recently installed ubuntu so I'm quite lost on some stuff. This little annoyance comes from the volume levels in Ubuntu 10.04. I have partitioned my computer to have dual boot into windows and ubuntu, so I know the problems are not related to the hardware itself as everything works just fine in windows. I am using a Dell Inspiron 9400, for reference.
The multimedia keys on the computer respond correctly but on the lower three volume settings sound completely drops out as if I had muted the computer. I went into the Alsa mixer to see if I could configure these sound levels and sure enough the master volume was down to zero, PCM and LFE are also low . I changed the settings of the lower levels but when I press on the volume up or down media keys to switch level the settings get reset. I tried just changing one level, exiting and saving through alsactl but it didn't stick. Even after reboot the settings are back to the zero volume on the first levels.

I am running KDE 4.6 in Debian Testing. Is there a way to increase the sound (i.e. more than the standard 100%)? The current settings with my speakers seem a bit too quiet in some cases.
I found a way to do it in PulseAudio, but I don't think Debian's KDE build is compatible.

Upgraded via Update Manager from 9.10 sound-previously-working-just-fine-system. Now, for example, running any audio-producing app (Rythmbox is a good example but its the same for anything including out of a VirtualBox XP install or with MythBuntu): The main volume control functions, but goes from muted to full volume in just 4 steps; raising it higher has no effect. It gets stranger: in Alsamixer or gnome-alsa-mixer I can see that lowering the desktop volume control to mute causes Master, PCM, Front, Surround, Center, LFE, and Side all to go to zero. Raising the desktop control one step causes all of these but Front to go to 100% instantly. Increasing the desktop control by a few more steps causes Front to step to 100%, after which no further volume increase is perceived. It's as if each step in the desktop volume equals some 25% of the Front setting, and 100% of the others. The audio setting in System, Preferences, Sound, Hardware is "Analog Stereo Output."
If I click 'Mute' on Master in the mixer then all the speakers mute, but unmuting Master does not unmute anything else. Only after I move and release the mouse-down state from the master volume do the other channels unmute. The volume control in Rythmbox, on the other hand, works seemingly correctly (maybe its going thru Pulseaudio?) And as an aside, why are there no controls for Pulse if it sits on top of ALSA?
I'm really confused by this, as all of it work as "expected" while running 9.10. Here is some output from this system (an ASUS M4A78T-E):
