Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 - Connecting Computer To CRT TV
May 24, 2010
Not the best idea to dive into the Linux world on my first ever HTPC build. Anyway, here I am. I am trying to connect my computer with a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 to an older CRT TV. My video card has (2) DVI ports as well as an S-Audio port. The TV has S-Audio and the white-yellow-red RCA's. I bought an S-Audio cable today but I cannot get the "detect monitor" option in system>preferences>monitor to detect anything other than the actual monitor I also have hooked up at the moment. I haven't even begun to focus on audio yet, but I expect that to be much smoother than the video side of it.
PC specs just in case:
Gigabyte P35-DS3L
Intel E8400
Generic (2) 2GB RAM
XFX 8800gts Alpha Dog
Razer Barracuda AC-1
WD 500GB

I'm trying to get audio from a keyboard into my computer. I have a 1/8' to 1/4' adapter, and I can hear the sound from the other end when I connect my earphones to the keyboard, but if I connect it to my computer's microphone port, it doesn't even recognize something connected there. Sound preferences tell me that there are two microphones connected (two built-in microphones), and so does Jack. How do I get it to detect the keyboard? I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, if that's of any relevance.
[edit] I also tried connecting this computer to another computer (i.e. Speakers are connected to computer 2, a 1/8' cable goes from the speaker's earphone socket and into computer 1's microphone in). I expected the sound produced by computer 2 to go to computer 1 like regular microphone input would, but it still didn't detect anything and persisted in telling me that there are only two sound inputs on the computer.

I have 2 computers in my house, on my network. I want to connect to one computer to the other using SSH. On one I installed "OpenSSH-server". "OpenSSH-client" was already installed. I go to the other computer to try to connect to the "server" computer and I enter in the terminal:
Code:
ssh username@192.168.0.33
It never connects. The text input "bar" keeps blinking, it never connects and I get the "Connection timed out" message.
how I can connect to the "server" computer? What am I doing wrong? And if I edit my "/etc/ssh/sshd_config" file to listen to port "12345" how do I get the other machine to connect to that port?

I have Ubuntu server installed on my old machine, which has no avahi running. I want to be able to connect to it by hostname. Is it possible. I have a tp-link TL-WR941ND router, but it doesn't seem to have any related options. How can I do it? Is there another way?I know I can add them on by one to the host file, but that is not what I want. Also that wouldn't work well with DHCP, and new hosts.

I am trying to connect to an apple computer wirelessly to get access to the internet.. If no encryption is used on the network (gateway?) set up by the apple computer I can connect just fine and browse the internet.
-If a WEP encryption is introduced I cannot seem to connect... even though the WEP keys are identical.
-I have tried both WEP 128 passphrase and WEP 40/128 key... -Have tried the WEP passphrase being both just numbers in case that mattered.

This problem started a few days ago. Whenever I attempt to connect to a wireless connection via network manager, my computer completely crashes, going to a black screen with no input from keyboard or mouse. It forces me to reboot using the power switch. Everything works fine when I connect to an ethernet cable, so I am sure it's a problem with my wireless driver.
I already tried (successfully) reinstalling the ath9k driver via compat wireless as was the advice from other forums, but this had no effect. I'm currently running opensuse 11.4, and haven't had this problem until a few days ago
This problem seems a bit ridiculous for a task as simple as connecting to a wireless network, so I'm convinced that either there is some sort of relatively simple way of fixing it, or windows really is the only decent operating system out there..

Update: I found the name of my software that came with keyboard: Cubase Ai4
How can I connect usb-piano to my computer?
I recently bought a yamaha KX8 keyboard. It does not, however, have any built in speakers, but must be connected to something in order to play.
It come with a USB cord and some weird windows software, that must be running in order for the keyboard to make any sound. Now that software seems VERY complicated. I merely want to play the "piano" instrument.
I was wandering if there is some kind of SIMPLER software (maybe open source) that will allow me to connect this keyboard to either windows or linux os?

Is it better to use a Usb to Serial Adapter Cable or a PCI Serial Port Card when attaching a serial port modem to a computer that doesn't provide onboard serial ports?I am leaning toward the USB to Serial Cable but do they work as well as a Serial Port Card? I have a US Robotics business class external serial modem that that I'd like to keep using for dialup internet connections. Here are the devices I am thinking of using:
USB To Serial Cable: KINAMAX CB-RS232 (Prolific Chipset)
PCI Adapter Card: SYBA SD-PCI 15024 --single port chipset=SB16C1052PC1

ive installed ubuntu for netbook on my laptop, everything went fine, it installed ok, and it was all good, until i tried clicking on the icon im supposed to click on to get conncected to wifi. where it's supposed to have various wireless networks it says "device not ready (firmware missing)" and ive tried everything i can think of to get it working, but it wont work. the same thing happens with my desktop computer, but with ubuntu desktop 10.10 and linux mint... but with the desktop, its probably just a case of finding drivers for my specific wireless adapter, in which case can anyone tell me where i can find the driver for a belkin F6D4050ea for linux?

I was taking a peek at the active connections shown by the Firestarter GUI and noticed the following (the source is my computer):
SourceDestinationPortServiceProgram
192.168.0.11266.235.133.4280HTTP
I closed all Internet related apps and the connection persisted. After a reboot it did not reconnect (yet). The IP address appears to belong to esomniture.com - some sort of web analytics company. How do I prevent my computer from connecting to these rascals. I have found a lot of documentation regarding stopping inbound connections to services on my computer but not the other way. I have various filtering addons installed in Firefox however, this connection seems to be at a lower level as no program is specified as being responsible for the connection.

I have a dell CPi laptop that I only want to use for connecting to my office computer via freenx. The laptop has a pcmcia wifi card, 4gb hard drive space, 128mb ram, and is a Pentium II 400mhz. Can you recommend a linux distro for me? I won't use any features other than freenx and wifi, so i'm sure this laptop is fast enough for that.

I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

I need to be able to log into (with X enabled) my home computer (running OpenSuse 11.4) from my work computer(running Windows XP). I was originally going to setup ssh on my home computer but then realized that I wouldn't be able to get my desktop this way.At work, we use windows remote desktop connection to log into other computers within our network, but I'm planning on asking my manager if I'm allowed to login to my home computer. If he accepts, I need a method to actually make it happen.I looked at FreeNX which seemed awesome but it doesn't seem to have windows support. To an extent that I would like to only allow my work IP to be allowed to even try an login. The bridge to cross here is the fact that I'm connecting from windows.

My network comprises three PC's .... Windows XP, Windows 98SE and Ubuntu 9.04 running SAMBA. All PC's are configured WORKGROUP=WORKGROUP. The network connection To/From XP/UBUNTU via SAMBA Shares works perfectly OK. However, despite scouring all forum information regarding changes to Win98 ENCRYPTION, (Registry change re: DWORD "EnablePlainTextPasswords"), the Win98 PC refuses to connect to UBUNTU. The UBUNTU PC can conect to all the Win98 shared folders OK. I have disabled my Linux Firewall (Firestarter), I have run SMBCLIENT to check the user password for Win98 and it is validated OK. The Win98 error message is ....
"\Inspiron 510m is not accessible. The computer or sharename could not be found. Make Sure you typed it correctly and try again."
My samba.conf file is as follows ..... Any help or assistance PLEASE !

I recently installed XBMC and Boxee on my Linux laptop, but neither of them are connecting to the internet. Since I'd like to try XBMC first, I'll talk about that here. When I run the program, I do not have a Live TV icon or link on the side. I can see my Music, Programs, Settings, Pictures, Video and Weather links on the sidebar, but my Weather page is blank as in I do not see any weather forecasts or whatever else ought to be on that page. I thought that maybe since I was running XBMC as a user there might be some permissions issues, so I ran "sudo xbmc" and received an error message "Do_Wait: DRMWaitBlank returned -1, IRQs Don't Seem to be working correctly. Try adjusting the vBlank_mode configuration parameter." No idea what that means. I've tried connecting both via Ethernet and my WiFi.

Just upgraded to Lucid (32bit), pulse generally seems to work ok: I get sound out, I can see various apps connecting via the Sound Preferences dialog (audacious, flash via alsa interface, etc.), and my mic seems to work fine too.
However, when starting skype (v2.1.0.81 which defaults to pulseaudio if it's running), it isn't able to output any sound and I never see a connection appear in Sound Preferences. Don't really want to force it to use Alsa or anything like that; I'd be fine with pulse if it would just work.
I've tried installing the .deb from the skype site as well as the official ubuntu package, with the same result. Any idea why pulse seems to be working, but skype can't seem to use it properly?
