running 10.04.2, on a Lenovo G550, I am experiencing an intermittent problem, in that after every reboot, and some wake after suspend, the internal mic has muted. I have to open alsamixer to reset its level, and then it's fine till I reboot and sometimes it is fine after a suspend, but not always. How do I get alsamixer to "remember" the setting?

I have a hp 500 laptop(quite old) and when i plug in the headphones it plays sound from both the headphones and the laptop speakers. This doesn't happen when i'm using windows xp. if there are any threads about this please direct me to them if not give me advice on what to do.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've decided to get back into using Suse as my primary OS! I'm almost there, only a few minor issues to work out remain. One of these issues is with my audio drivers. My audio is working for the most part. I have sound coming from both my speakers and the front-audio jack. When I plug headphones into the front jack the audio is muted; however, unless I unmute the audio I won't get any sound from my headphone jack. The volume is shared. How can I give headphones a separate volume control? Or just completely mute my speakers when I have headphones plugged in. Using alsamixer, Headphones are disabled. Which seems odd. View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 11.4, but skype seems to mute all other application streams when a call is active. I can manually unmute them, but it is rather annoying especially when listening to music in the background using Amarok since everytime a new track starts it creates a new stream and is muted again.
I installed pavucontrol just to see if it had more options then kde's built in multimedia settings, but it doesn't (just has the cool how loud is the volume currently). I like the individual application (stream) volumes.
What is the best way to disable start up sounds? I hate being in a quiet place and having the start up sound go off on my computer. I've tried muting before shutting down and that works 40% of the time when i start up again. I do dual boot os, so will changing something in Ubuntu mess with mint or vice versa?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an external (USB) sound-card attached to my laptop, through which I generally want all of my sound routed. By and large, the device works wonderfully - with one minor (but annoying) quirk: almost every time the computer reawakens from suspend mode with the device plugged in, something in the OS automatically mutes all sound coming from that device. Note that Ubuntu does NOT restore control to my on-board sound chip - so whenever this happens, I'm left with a machine that's basically universally muted, for no good reason. Of course, I can just go into the volume control panel and unmute the external card - but I'm getting a bit tired of having to do this each time I turn on the machine.
Anybody have any ideas as to how I can force Ubuntu to NOT mute the external card?
I recently upgraded from FC11 to FC14 by backing up /home, saving the output of "rpm -qa", repartitioning, installing FC14, restoring /home, re-running "rpm -qa" and installing packages that I had before.
But I noticed that the nice GUI mixer that I had before which could allow me separately muting the speakers (conneced to "front" jack) while leaving the signal to the headphone

I have a Gateway NV52 with an internal microphone and internal webcam. On Windows, both work fine, but on Ubuntu I can only get the webcam to work. I never used one on Ubuntu (using Karmic Koala 64 bit) before, so I may be overlooking something.

I have already upgraded my ALSA Drivers using the latest 1.0.23, and in alsamixer it shows the iMic and Capture devices correctly, however in sound recorder and in Skype I get nothing but a low hissing sound. I believe this is a pulse audio problem and not ALSA since I didn't have a problem in Kubuntu 9.04 using ALSA which I had previously to this.
In sound config pulseaudio shows that there is only one input and one output device which I figure should read 2 input devices since there is also a mic jack on the laptop. Either way it is really annoying not to have use of the Mic.

When I turn the i-Mic on I can hear the echo of myself coming out the internal speakers but it still won't record anything even with the Capture control on and at full volume.
I've got a Gateway CX2724. The sound works perfectly out of the speakers and headphones, but I can't get the internal mic to work for the life of me.

When I use alsamixer to turn "mux" all the way up and have my headphones plugged into the microphone jack (don't have an external mic... ) in the front of the computer, I am able to record things but the volume is greatly muted. Perhaps the external jack is set to default for the microphone instead of using the internal mic?
I also have the output for alsa-info.sh if you want it - this was mentioned in the alsa configuration file (/usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt). Info about alsa-info.sh here.

I have a HP Pavillion dv4 1313dx that has been running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 wonderfully, but I am getting nothing out of the microphone.
I am a VERY beginning user (All I really know how to do in terminal is copy/paste, cd, ls, and, chown) and if I can fix this easily, I'd love it.
I already know to check the sound preferences, and nothing is picked up on the microphone, but I think it's there.
I had the problems with the external speakers not working in Ubuntu 10.04 on ThinkPad Edge (Intel), my friend advised to upgrade to the kernel 2.6.35.15 and it . But!.. in those kernel version internal microphone is not working, though it works in 2.6.32-24-generic-pae.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've spent the last couple hours trying to figure out how to get my SoundBlaster XFi card working, but somehow in the process seem to have now also broken my on-board sound which when I first installed did work. I have no idea how as I hardly touched anything.Both cards are recognized in Sound preferences, sound is not muted there nor in Alsamixer. But neither produce any sound at all now.
Searching around the forums it seems that as of now my XFi should, kind of, work out of the box, but I've had no such luck.I'd really like any advice possible on getting my XFi with headphones to work in 10.04, but if this can't be done I'd atleast like to find a way to fully reset my sound setting so my on-board will work without having to wipe this partition and reinstall - there Must be an easier solution than that.
My Toshiba Satellite L305D is running Ubuntu 10.10. The internal microphone doesn't work - if I try to record something, I just hear some clicks. According to the terminal, my audio device is:

When I click open alsamixer, the boxes for Front Mic, Mic Boost and Beep are empty. When I go to Preferences => Sound => Hardware I get a choice of Analogue Stereo input, output and duplex - as well as off. I go for duplex. When I go to sound => input, the microphone mute box in unchecked and the single volume bar is at a maximum. There are no choices - the one choice, Internal Audio Analog Stereo, is checked. As it's only once choice, it can't be unchecked.
yesterday i was on videos, and i had headphones plugged into the headphone socket on my laptop.i unplugged them a few times because they were needed elsewhere, but on the last time i unplugged them, the sound didn't return to the internal speakers. i plugged the headphones back in, and there was sound out of the headphones, but not speakers. i rebooted the laptop, still to find sound only out of the headphones. i then was very bad, and booted into wingdoze, and still sound only out of the headphones.
i've tried doing the muting channels in alsa-mixer as well. muting didn't work. i've also tried cleaning the headphone socket with ispopropyl alcohol too. and removing the bios battery and battery and ac adaptor... just incase it will do a reset of some description. no. still nothing.

edit: the "mute" media button light appears to be lit, however pressing it only feeds a software into the computer, and doesn't turn the light off. i'll try playing around a bit more. edit: i just discovered that if you hold down the m key on alsamixer to mute/unmute the "external amplifier" channel, the light flashes! this is beginning to look promising. edit: if i unmute the external amplifier before i log out, it stays unmuted until i log back in again. what can i do to stop it from muting as soon as i log back in again?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI can get sound out of my machine just fine, but for some reason, no matter what audio player I use, every time I change the song or pause playing half my speakers will kill sound and it will seem like the sound profile has reverted to Analog Surround 5.0 Output. When I check my sound configuration it still lists 5.1, and I have to select another setting then change it back to 5.1 to get my speakers all functioning again.
