Ubuntu :: Meerkat Gcalctool 5.32.0 (default Calculator) Missing Memory Registers
Oct 28, 2010
Ubuntu 10.10 default calculator, gcalctool 5.32. seems to be missing the 10 memory registers it used to have. The geaphic keys for memory functions are missing and control-M does not bring up memory pop-up either. Am I just missing something or have they been removed? I store lots of intermediate results in the registers for use later in calculations.

I have tried to learn how 64bit asm (nasm in my case) works and found, among the many disparate pieces of info on the net, a few vague inferences that floating point registers can be used for other purposes than what they are intended for, example: "64-bit Linux allows up to fourteen parameters to be transferred in registers (6 integer and 8 floating point)." This would be fantastic for string operations/manipulation (I have never used asm for floating-point operations), can anyone shed a bit of light?

I dislike this version of the calculator as it no longer is resize-able, and it no longer stores saved numbers as in past versions.So I want to remove it and use a previous version, butSynaptic wants to remove ubuntu-desktop along with it.That doesn't sound right?

I use Mythbuntu 9.10 with an IMON PAD IR/VFD. Everything is fine except that two buttons (MyDVD and menu) fire their event twice. In that case, I'm not talking about a normal repetition in case of a long button press but they fire their initial events twice.
Here is what irw shows:
0000000029a3d5b7 00 MyDVD iMON-PAD
0000000029a3d5b7 00 MyDVD iMON-PAD
000000002ba385b7 00 Menu iMON-PAD
000000002ba385b7 00 Menu iMON-PAD
I pressed the buttons only once each - and not long enough for a repetition. For all other buttons it's fine. As far as I understand, using the .lirrc file to cope with repetitions is no valid approach (at least it didn't work for me) because the events are all numbered with "00", and not with "00", "01",... - so .lircrc is out of this, right?

I need to set the CR4.MCE bit for all the cores on my system (4). I'd like to write a linux kernel module for that, but I am not sure how to proceed: How do you sequentially access all of the CR4 registers? I have read the Intel manuals and they describe a way to initialize each core, but this is done in the bios.

I am trying to access an OpenBSD system that I have just installed via my PcBSD system by the use of a serial cable. I have been trying both minicom and cu but I am obviously doing something wrong... cu -l /dev/cuad0 returns /var/spool/lock/LCK...cuad0 Permission Denied. Can't Open lock file. all ports busy. And when I try to connect through minicom I either get a similar lock error, or minicom will sit at the connection screen with (offline status). I feel like the answer to my problems is a rather simple one, but I do not know where else to look for information.

Once I setup KDE on Testing and opened Dolphin I reallzed there were no default folders (Documents, Desktop, Music...) and was wondering if this is normal. Other distros like Kubuntu and PCLinuxOS (what a name) have these and I was wondering if they added them or they are part of KDE. Gnome has them on debian but not KDE.
If they are part of KDE and I'm missing them and shouldn't, would manually adding them as I did require mentioning them elsewhere on the system or do applications and such assume they are there?

Starting a few days ago, I am unable to leave my kde session using the "leave" facilities. On a fresh login, I can select the leave button and it pops up the menu as per normal. However, whatever I select (logout, shutdown or reboot) nothing happens. I cannot now select the leave button. I click it but nothing happens.
I checked the log messages and see an error posted by kdm that grub-set-default is not in the path. I issue a find and, yeps, no grub-set-default. A week or two ago, I uninstalled CUPS. Went to make tea, came back to find a huge list of stuff being deleted. I had to abort it and spent a long while re-installing loads of stuff, for instance, even Mozzila. Can't find where to get grub-set-default so anybody know where to get it?

I'm currently reading math courses at home, as opposed to doing it in school, and Swedish schools recommend getting a TI 80 or TI 83 calculator for these math courses. If I'd actually buy one of them, a TI 83 would probably be a better choice since it would last me through more courses, but for now a TI 80 calculator is enough. They are graphing calculators, for anybody that doesn't know.
Anyway, since I'm reading at home, and these calculators are a little expensive, I was looking at software to replace them... The gnome calculator that comes with Ubuntu is a good start, and is probably almost enough for what I will need for now, but it lacks the graphing capabilities, which I will need.
Is there either a more complete calculator, or something to complement the gnome calculator, that will suite my needs? I know I could look through all of the calculators in the repos, but frankly it takes quite a bit of time.

I want to know if it is possible to edit the source code of the programs in Linux. Like, take the calculator for instance. If I want to add a user-defined function to it, how can I do it - if I can do it at all? In general, where and how can I look at the source code of such programs ?

- Axis C++: axis-c-linux-current-bin.
- Xerces (parser xml): xerces-c2_2_0-linux8.0gcc32
- Apache 2: httpd-2.0.64.
I have used Eclipse to compile the example. When I run the calculator client I get the following message on the command line: "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'axiscpp::SoapFaultException' what(): Cannot deserialize the requested element " and warning message:

I'm currently running openSuSE 11.4 (kde v 4.6.4), and after unlocking the mouse cursor from the DOSBox (v 0.74) window, none of the Plasma Desktop Widgets or Components will register mouse clicks until I reboot.
Is there something config-wise I might change to prevent this from happening, or is there an otherwise quick way to restart only plasma using the terminal? Yakuake still drops down, and works, fortunately, so doing this is not a problem.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that all of said applications were installed from openSuSE repos using YaST2.

I decided to switch from chrome back to iceweasel as my default browser. However, when I try to do that (as I used to) via Details -> Default Applications -> Web, iceweasel is not listed as choice.I tried to do it then from the shell with
Code: Select allupdate-alternatives --config x-www-browser
update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser
At least out of evolution or thunderbird, still chrome is opened when clicking on a link.

#!/bin/sh
# run from directory where this script is
cd `echo $0 | sed 's/(.*)/.*/1/'` # extract pathname
