Ubuntu :: Software Center Downloads Won't Start?

Jan 7, 2010

I've been trying to download some software stuff off of the Ubuntu Software Center, but every time I try it tells me "Waiting for other software managers to quit", and just sits there at 0%. I've been waiting for 45 minutes for it to start the download of Pidgin.I looked in the Processes of System Monitor, and I dunno what other Software manager would be running. The only processes that are running are System Monitor... and then the process"software-center" under the Waiting Channel tab goes from 0 to "do_wait" to "poll_schedule_timeout", and its status goes from Running to Sleeping.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Install .deb Files Any More - Software Center Doesn't Start From Main Menu

Oct 31, 2010

Yesterday, I made a clean install of 10.10 (64 bit). Among others, I installed World of Goo from a .deb file, and it worked fine.

Today, I wanted to install Skype from the .deb file. When I double-click the file, I get a "wait" cursor for ~20 sec, then nothing happens. When I try to start Software Center from the Main menu, I also get the Wait cursor and then nothing happens.

I started software-center from the terminal and the software center opened, despite some warnings in the terminal. I could install some random application from the list. Then I tried to start

Code:

And the software center window showed, with Skype selected. When I clicked Install, there was an error message. Despite the "no such a file or directory" part, I am sure that the file name is correct (I tab-completed it).

This is the error message I received when I tried to install:

Code:

Here are the warnings I received when I started the software center:

Code:

There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks. Please report this error at [url] and retry.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Screen Off Center From Monitor

Jan 24, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an older Biostar IDEQ 200N SFF computer for my son. I am by no means a linux expert and I am having a problem I can't seem to resolve on my own. I am using a CRT monitor, and the image on the screen is not aligned properly with the monitor. Everything seems shifted down about a quarter of an inch or less. Even the usual click areas are no right. What I mean that is order to click on a link or icon, you actually have to click slightly above it. I know the CRT monitor has screen adjustment controls, but this seems to be linux or hardware related. I have tried changing the resolution, and for a brief second after I change the res it does seem to correct the problem, but before I can even tell it to use the new settings, it shifts itself back down. What can I do? Do I need to install different drivers or something else?

Ubuntu :: In XFCE - Prevent Mouse Cursor From Defaulting To Center Of Screen?

Jul 16, 2010

I have a machine running XFCE in a "kiosk" environment. The machine normally runs without a keyboard or mouse, and I remote control it via VNC and SSH.

When the machine starts up, the mouse cursor sits in the center of the screen. I don't want to plug in a mouse or use VNC to move the mouse to the bottom-right corner so that it is not visible, so is there a way to hide the mouse cursor or tell it to move to the lower right when X starts? It would be even cooler if the mouse could be disabled or hidden when no mouse is connected, but re-enabled when someone plugs in a mouse, but that's probably asking too much.

Ubuntu :: Natty Login - With Ati Catalyst Control Center - Screen Goes Blank ?

Sep 1, 2011

I just did a fresh install of natty, installed a few programs along with the ati catalyst control center.

I am having serious login issues, here is what I do:

I am at the login screen right from start-up, type in username and passward and hit enter, screen goes blank, it appears I am logging in, ubuntu plays a sound and puts me back at the login screen. I do not get an "Authentication Failed" error like I would expect. Unable to login as myself or as root.

However, I am able to login if I select the "safe mode," I am not able to login under the normal mode or the ubuntu classic modes.

I suspect that this issue has to do with the ati proprietary drivers, after playing with the settings for a while in safe mode I am now able to login to the normal natty mode without any apparent issues.

Here is what I changed in ati catalyst control center to boot into natty mode:

I disabled the Xinerama and Tear Free options.

Under the 3D settings, I selected the "override application setting" for all the 3D settings I could.

I believe I still have some display issues as I am unable to drag windows from one display to another, my mouse is able to move just fine across displays though.

I also found that enabling Xinerama prevented me from logging into the ubuntu and ubuntu classic modes, but I was able to login to the ubuntu with no effects mode.

General :: Screen Start / Stop Script With Name?

I use a centos VPS with 1gb memory and enough space and brandwidth (if this info is off any use). What I want to achieve is that I can start and quit a process that is running in a screen, with using a script.

Like start.sh that does "screen serverapp1"
and stop.sh that does "kill serverapp1"

I already tried something like that, but it didn't work. The kill command only works with process ID's and that one is variable.
