I'm currently reading math courses at home, as opposed to doing it in school, and Swedish schools recommend getting a TI 80 or TI 83 calculator for these math courses. If I'd actually buy one of them, a TI 83 would probably be a better choice since it would last me through more courses, but for now a TI 80 calculator is enough. They are graphing calculators, for anybody that doesn't know.
Anyway, since I'm reading at home, and these calculators are a little expensive, I was looking at software to replace them... The gnome calculator that comes with Ubuntu is a good start, and is probably almost enough for what I will need for now, but it lacks the graphing capabilities, which I will need.
Is there either a more complete calculator, or something to complement the gnome calculator, that will suite my needs? I know I could look through all of the calculators in the repos, but frankly it takes quite a bit of time.

I want to know if it is possible to edit the source code of the programs in Linux. Like, take the calculator for instance. If I want to add a user-defined function to it, how can I do it - if I can do it at all? In general, where and how can I look at the source code of such programs ?

I have followed the calculator sample tutorial and cannot get the the calculator client working, the problem appears on the server side. I am working on Linux, I am using:
- Axis C++: axis-c-linux-current-bin.
- Xerces (parser xml): xerces-c2_2_0-linux8.0gcc32
- Apache 2: httpd-2.0.64.
I have used Eclipse to compile the example. When I run the calculator client I get the following message on the command line: "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'axiscpp::SoapFaultException' what(): Cannot deserialize the requested element " and warning message:

My main problem right now is doing floating point arithmetic within a bash script, with variables.Right now I have a folder called "myExamples" with a script called "run_example" that runs with no issues.I plan to(1) create many folders inside [myExamples], that are named [example10] [example11]...each containing an identical copy of (run_example),(2) modify Line 172 of each copy of (run_example)...in one copy, it would be 3.00, the next copy would have 3.05, etc. (This part doesn't work!)How can I use the available calculator bc code to do floating point operationsMy code is below -
#!/bin/sh
# run from directory where this script is
cd `echo $0 | sed 's/(.*)/.*/1/'` # extract pathname

Ubuntu 10.10 default calculator, gcalctool 5.32. seems to be missing the 10 memory registers it used to have. The geaphic keys for memory functions are missing and control-M does not bring up memory pop-up either. Am I just missing something or have they been removed? I store lots of intermediate results in the registers for use later in calculations.

I am using the script below but need to make it to show the result in a html popup window. The script is Free and I don't think Kristina will complaint by making it more versatile.
The problem I have is that the script moves to a standalone window to show the results. I am interested in making it "popup' a window with the results.
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
# NOTE: You must change the line above to point to the path to Perl
# on your system.

snappy title to grab attention. maybe not stupid, but bleeding difficult to use, talk about a non-obvious, non-intuitive interface; I want to enter a hex value, and have the calculator convert that to decimal. So, I use the pull-down, choose 'hexadecimal', enter the hex value, then change the pull down to 'decimal', expecting to see the decimal (base 10) value. What do I see? The display just adds the hexadecimal base to the end of the hex value I just wrote! Where's my decimal (base 10) number damn it? I can't for the life of me work it out.

Neither Ubuntu's Unity or KDE respond to the function keys on a regular Apple USB keyboard. I can plug in a non-Apple keyboard and they work just fine. What needs to be changed or configure so that F1 and company on the Apple keyboard work as on other keyboards?

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;
When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.
Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

I had a thread about installing on a Mac and decided to go the VirtualBox route and everything is running splendidly EXCEPT for the fnmode setting in /sys/module/hid_apple.
The problem is that the directory hid_apple does not exist for me to modify the settings for the apple keyboard. I'm assuming that when installing in VB, Ubu assumed it was a PC. Anyone know of a way to get the keyboard config directories in there so I don't have to hit Fn to do Alt-F2? Also, I tried to create the directory (sudo mkdir) and it returned "Cannot create directory...no such file or directory", but not in so many words.

I've had a Apple Powerbook G4 for a while now, but being mostly a Windows user I've never used it. I remember when it ran it's native OSX (Which I can't for the life remember) Probably Tiger? Anyways... I tried installing Ubuntu on it about a year and a half ago, the installation was botched and I left it sitting there with no purpose in life. :O
So I've decided to dust the laptop and give it another go. I've progressed a little further with my Linux experience, having installed and tested a few distros and even switching over to Ubuntu 9.10 for about 4 months. Enough of my life story and more to the point.Has anyone installed Ubuntu, or any distro for that matter on the Apple Powerbook G4? I know there are different versions of the G4 and I'm not entirely sure what my version is, It's the 1.6Ghz version with The Nvidia card (Err I think) and extra Wireless card installed. I am not very capable with Mac - After checking Apples website I believe it's the 15inch.
I've read the FAQ thread and will begin trying to install Ubuntu tonight at home, I just wanted some suggestion and some pointers in the right direction. What distro would be most suitable for my hardware? and What is easiest to set up?

I have been using ubuntu since 10.04 version and configure with compiz to activate the corners, cube, etc. No problems with that. When I upgraded to 11.04 these things were not working but honestly I did not care that much and was just playing with compiz, so I was playing with an option in compiz about the size of the icons in the new 11.04 launch bar, just when I clicked it my top bar and launch bar are gone and not coming back after rebooting many times. BTW I already uninstalled compiz via terminal and the same problem is happening, maybe important for you to know (alt+f2 or other shortcuts not working except for ctr+alt+t)

I installed it yesterday. It worked well. I was able to log into windows without any trouble and restart into Ubuntu without a hitch.
This morning I launched Ubuntu as usual vi GRUB. I was asked to install about 135 upgrade files, which went withou an apparent challenges. I then went through the restart and noticed that there was an extra two choices in GRUB, but I just left it to launch Ubuntu automatically. Which it did.
I then messed about with the appearance settings. Noticed a some more updates were waiting which included 49 files. I went through the updating process and restart.
GRUB worked well, and I was soon loggin in with username and password.
The Ubuntu Screen became visible with the flashing horizontal line and about 3 seconds later everything froze. I waited for several minutes - I timed them - but still no progress - everything remained frozen.
I switched off the machine completely, as I knew of no other way to get out of this situation. I rebooted and when GrUB launched I booted into windows 7 with absolutely no problems.
I used restart in windows and then allowed GRUB to boot into Ubuntu. Once more I was able to log in but soon after the Ubuntu Screen appeared and the horizontal line flashed for a few seconds, everything froze. This time I waited five minutes before switching off the machine by disconnecting at the mains.
I am now using windwos 7 to make contact

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 and i want to make some icons on the desktop to launch various telnet sessions. So i make a .sh using vi test.sh and then put in telnet 180.9.x.xx and save and quit. Then i chmod 777 it to make it executable and then moved it to my Desktop folder. But when i double click or right click and open with konsole nothing happens. I know it is probably something stupid which i have overlooked but when i have done this in Ubuntu in the past it has worked.
