Ubuntu :: Malfunction With Power Meter Ubuntu 10.10

Oct 18, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition on my HP Compaq Presario V3018TU Note Book PC.It is working fine. The problem is with Power Meter.It shows battery Charged in Icon, though it is discharging. Also after clicking on it, it should show % battery power. But it only shows (estimating).Is there any way to fix this ?It was working fine with Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: 9.04 To 9.10 Upgrade Malfunction

Nov 25, 2010

After I finished the upgrade, everything is running super slow (I'm actually writing this on my Vista). One thing that I did different during the installation process was keeping my grub's menu.lst file intact so it's the same as it was before (still showing 9.04 on the title). Should I completely reformat my ubuntu partition and install 9.10 from scratch??? (I have a feeling I do)

Software :: RPM Malfunction On Ubuntu (APT-GET Command)

May 9, 2010

Today I experienced an weird functioning of rpm on ubuntu. In general, to install any software on ubuntu we use "apt-get" command,but, the problem with it is that it will install the latest version of that software present in the repository. For installing the older versions of the particular software, "apt-get" is not useful. Today I wanted to install the java 1.4 version on my box. I downloaded the rpm.bin file from the oracle Sun site. let us assume that the name of the downloaded file is java1.4.rpm.bin. To convert the file into an rpm format I gave the following command ./java1.4.rpm.bin. This command showed a list of terms and conditions and after accepting, it generated the rpm file java1.4.rpm.

Then I gave the command rpm -ivh java1.4.rpm. After executing this command, I expected java to be installed but it gave me an error like "rpm: please use alien to install rpm packages on Debian, if you are really sure use --force-debian switch. See README.Debian for more details." When I do the following steps same-to-same on redhat and when I gave the command ./java1.4.rpm.bin, java got installed automatically and environmental variable was created. I do not know why ubuntu is not supporting the rpm packages. If we want to use "apt-get" then we have to see the alternative way of installing the older versions of any software.

Ubuntu :: Numeric Keyboard Malfunction On Acer Laptop

Mar 25, 2011

I am running Ubuntu on an Acer 5742 laptop and running XP on Oracle Virtual box and plugged in externally (keyboard, mouse etc...) I have lost ability on both the laptop numeric keyboard (only the numeric keys) and the external keyboard when plugged in. This happened while I was working in Virtual box and running Windows XP.

When the laptop is on its own the numeric keyboard doesn't work (only numeric keys) either. I have toyed with the number lock and I have un-installed and re-installed both"keyboard input methods" and "input method switcher" within Ubuntu software centre to with no change. Not that I bought the damn computer for the numeric keyboard but it should work.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Grep VU-meter From Terminal

Is there any way to get information about whether something is currently played via the speakers? Is there an app that "scans" the VU-meter (e.g. pavumeter) in a terminal and prints out any information about the current "sound-volume" that goes out?I'd like to create a script that prevents my Ubuntu to suspend while something (e.g. music) is played... May 2, 2010

I have an Asus EEE PC900. Just installed 10.04 netbook remix and everything works fine straight out of the box. it works great and is a vast improvement on windows xp which was previously installed on the asus. Just one small thing - the battery meter is never accurate as far as time remaining goes - it currently says i have 19 hours 55 minutes to go - unfortunately this is not quite true i suspect. It was the same with 9.10, Does anyone have a solution for this?

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Usage Monitor Meter

Jul 24, 2011

I'm using ubuntu 11.04 and have a DSL connection straight from my local telephone (landline) provider.I need a ubuntu app, preferably a daemon/service (that I can start up on boot) that, in essence, can simply log to a file, on a per session basis (with timestamps of course), the bandwidth I use (download + upload bytes).

I'm not interested in logging site info etc., just want raw data usage so at the end of the month I can run some summary reports on it.Basically I was to see if my ISP is cheating me or not (and in general to control myself on my HUGE ..... + ISO download habbits)..I need nothing fancy, even a basic command will do in which case i'll be happy to write my own basj script for that...

I installed Kubuntu 9.04 recently which I thought was jaunty, but my apt sources list had Karmic Koala as the repos. Updater told me 9.1 was available so I used updater to upgrade my system. Debian Configuration :: Network Malfunction After Possible Ping Attack

Apr 8, 2010

I would like to ask something. Today my network Internet access suddenly slowed down, after inspecting the problem the hard way we disconnected one of our servers(ip=190, debian squeeze) from network and the network was alright again. When we plugged it back in, following symptoms were observed: computer 190 pinged gateway app. each 6th time. gateway(debian lenny) pinged computer 190 app each 6th time whole network Internet access was slowed down, local network functioned just fine

While pinging themselves, i ran iptraf on icmp packets on gateway and I saw what i thought was ping attack, lots of echo request coming from external address to computer 190. Blocking that address in iptables didn't help but restarting the gateway did, network Internet conenction is at full speed and gateway and computer 190 ping just fine.

My question is, what steps should I undertake in similar case (it's second time in 2 months) - to debug similar problems. Is it even possible for ping DOS to this kind of damage?

Debian :: Console Only Session - Hard Drive Malfunction

Jun 16, 2009

My hard drive's file system has become totally mucked up. I had a few partitions on it, 0 is XP, 1 is vista, 2 is Debian, and 3 is the data. I know that it's this hard drive because when I disconnect it, any liveCD runs ok. After failing to boot puppy linux (liveCD), xp (bootmgr not found), debian (ended in kernal panic), I tried GPARTED. The xp and vista partitions are listed as existing, but they show a problem flag, gparted says they are corrupt, and they are not listed as having a start, end, or any data. However, the main data partition does list a start, end, size, and data space used.

I need to either format those or get into something that will let me access the data partition. Gparted either hangs on boot or doesn't recognise the mouse so I can't reformat the bad partitions. Are there any programs that will ignore the bad partitions and let me access the good ones? Any time I go into a linux distro it either ends up in kernel panic or the mouse doesn't respond. It's hard to explain. With GPARTED, sometimes it hangs at the third line, sometimes it fails at "mounting hard drives", and sometimes it makes it to the GUI but I can't use the mouse. Debian alternates between these as well.

If I keep trying it looks like I can boot, and it will recognise the partitions, but I can't use the mouse. I'm kind of familar with bash, is there a way to start up the terminal with no gui? If I could get a terminal up with a hotkey in the GUI or just start up from a terminal (no gui), I could type mv dev/sda3/ or whatnot. If I could get into a terminal of gparted I could format the bad parts of the drive to see if that would work. Otherwise it looks like I'm going to have to zero out the drive with the WD diag tool. The data isn't life or death, but it would save me some time.

Software :: Hplip-gui's Toner - Ink Meter

May 31, 2011

How accurate is the ink/toner meter in the HP printer toolkit (hplip-gui)? The meter says my toner level is "good/ok" and displays a black bar with tick marks, but I'm skeptical of its accuracy. I bought this Laserjet P1006 last January, with a starter cartridge of toner that was rated for around 120 pages (if I recall), and have printed occasionally. I'm afraid of running out of toner right when I need to print something important and time-sensitive. Since it doesn't appear to be possible to look inside the toner cartridge (sorry, this is my first laser printer ), I can't do anything except hope the HP toolbox measures my toner level accurately.

If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again.
The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).

acpi_listen detects the button press.

Any thoughts?
