View 2 RepliesI have an Asus EEE PC900. Just installed 10.04 netbook remix and everything works fine straight out of the box. it works great and is a vast improvement on windows xp which was previously installed on the asus. Just one small thing - the battery meter is never accurate as far as time remaining goes - it currently says i have 19 hours 55 minutes to go - unfortunately this is not quite true i suspect. It was the same with 9.10, Does anyone have a solution for this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been tooling around with Fedora with the Fluxbox environment on my old Dell 400SD4 laptop and it works fantastic. I'm still getting a feel for the environment, but one major concern that I had was a battery meter. Being a laptop, it's important to know when I'm almost out of juice. Does anyone have any suggestions for a battery meter for Fluxbox? Preferably one that can be installed through the yum repositories?

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust installed 9.10 followed by a 10.04 upgrade (wouldn't work as a 10.04 clean install). The install and upgrade all seemed to go well.
But now when booting I get a message saying "checking battery state" and then it boots no further. This is a laptop without a battery installed, running permanently from the mains through the charger.
How can I disable this check so that the laptop will still boot without a battery fitted?
getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactions and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery. So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.
Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery Maintenance utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.
I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 11 with Wubi and the progress meter is missing. I cannot see if it's 30% done installed or 60% or whatever. It's annoying.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to get information about whether something is currently played via the speakers? Is there an app that "scans" the VU-meter (e.g. pavumeter) in a terminal and prints out any information about the current "sound-volume" that goes out?I'd like to create a script that prevents my Ubuntu to suspend while something (e.g. music) is played... View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 3 year old laptop with the original battery and its drained pretty bad. The "Battery may be broken" popup was driving me insane and this is how you disable it, in case you are in the same situation as me. Open terminal
Code:
gconf-editor
Drill down to...
apps --> gnome-power-manager --> notify
uncheck the low_capacity checkbox. This should disable the popup for you if your battery has little life left in it. Now, if any knows how to disable the Avahi popup, let me know.
I'm using ubuntu 11.04 and have a DSL connection straight from my local telephone (landline) provider.I need a ubuntu app, preferably a daemon/service (that I can start up on boot) that, in essence, can simply log to a file, on a per session basis (with timestamps of course), the bandwidth I use (download + upload bytes).
I'm not interested in logging site info etc., just want raw data usage so at the end of the month I can run some summary reports on it.Basically I was to see if my ISP is cheating me or not (and in general to control myself on my HUGE ..... + ISO download habbits)..I need nothing fancy, even a basic command will do in which case i'll be happy to write my own basj script for that...
As stated in previous posts I've not long come back to linux, I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good lightweight download usage meter to help track how much of my monthly allowance I have used etc.Under windows I was using one that logged into the Bigpond site and would display usage, how much was left and how many days were left till the end of the billing period.I've done some searching but so far can't find anything similar for linux.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow accurate is the ink/toner meter in the HP printer toolkit (hplip-gui)? The meter says my toner level is "good/ok" and displays a black bar with tick marks, but I'm skeptical of its accuracy. I bought this Laserjet P1006 last January, with a starter cartridge of toner that was rated for around 120 pages (if I recall), and have printed occasionally. I'm afraid of running out of toner right when I need to print something important and time-sensitive. Since it doesn't appear to be possible to look inside the toner cartridge (sorry, this is my first laser printer ), I can't do anything except hope the HP toolbox measures my toner level accurately.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen someone is speaking into the mic, I'd like a "level meter" such as the one that comes with gnome sound recorder, that flashes up and down when a sound is made or somebody talks. This will be done in Javascript, using the brand new "Rainbow API", i.e. inside the browser.I know nothing about audio programming, so - where would I get *started* with something like this? I am a new Ubuntu user (three months so far on Karmic amd64, and very happy with my new OS). I had to do a force shutdown after a system freeze (while viewing video on my tv - dual display - with vlc). Upon restart, I noticed the network connection icon missing from the taskbar; there was an empty "slot" between the evolution and sound icons so I figured the network icon was simply not appearing correctly.
I right clicked in that empty "slot" and chose to remove from taskbar with the intention of putting it back. After clicking remove, the taskbar started a cycle of constant disappear and reappear (about one second between each). The cycle is too fast to allow navigating in menus but I can access the terminal. Being new and all, I don't know how to configure the taskbar through the terminal... fix my taskbar in the terminal?
I hooked up my computer to a TV via VGA and after I was done my icons moved around on the taskbar. Usually the 'kevin' was on the far right. Is there a way to change it back?
