Hardware :: Sudden Printer Malfunction (Device Refused To Work)
Mar 23, 2011
I am using Mepis 8 on my PC and also have a laptop with windows XP installed. I had the laptop connected to the printer (HP Deskjet 930c) on my PC through the Internet Printer Protocol but it suddenly refused to work. I accessed localhost:631 through my broswer on my PC and there was a error message "permission denied on /dev/lp0". Now my printer refuses to work on my PC also. I have tried deleting the printer and rebooting and reinstalling it but the KDE print manager lets me get right to the final stage before informing me it cannot create the printer. All I was trying to find the URL to install on my laptop.

Sometimes when I hotplug a SATA device to/from say /dev/sdb, it malfunctions/times out, and cannot be detected. Then when I plug in another SATA device, it gets detected as /dev/sdc even though /dev/sdb is no longer there. How can I reclaim /dev/sdb in this case?

I had previously been having loads of problems getting my wireless printer to work with Linux [http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1453697]. Everything is working fine now. However, something that confused me is that whenever I tried to ping the printer _before_ I got it working, it would fail with a _different_ IP address. That is, the command 'ping x.y.z.3' would fail with a message saying it was unable to contact 'x.y.z.2'
Now I am looking at my router - for something unrelated - and I've noticed that rogue IP address shows up in the list of connected devices. It has a MAC address but for the device name it lists "<unknown>". Should I be concerned about this? how to figure out what this device is?

I want to use my QTCurve theme for GTK apps. This has worked great for several months on opensuse 11.2, and suddenly it broke. I do not know what made it broke, purhaps some kind of system update...The gtk-Qtcurve engines are installed (both 32 and 64 bit). I tried linking the gtkrc file from /usr/share/themes/QtCurve/gtk-2.0 towards /etc/gtk-2.0 but that didn't help either. I can change the GTK themes to whatever theme, except to QTCurve...

i have both pulseaudio and gstreamer installed, my "multimedia audio controller" claims to be a ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro-1 in the system information window and in the report i generated it says my Audio Adapter is "MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART" PulseAudio tells me Connection failed: Connection refused and the volume control that came with the system says No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found. I am not understanding, here. do I need some driver that i don't have? i installed all the gstreamer plugins that seemed to pertain to volume that i could find. If i am not very much mistaken, I am using Debian Lenny.

I have a machine running with slackware64 13.1 and vnc servers is installed on it. It worked for months until yesterday, when I couldnt connect to the machine remotely.
I have 2 vnc "users" on this machine, root and "user". Each have their own desktop. Root has desktop :1 and user had desktop :2. Simple enough.
VNC servers is started via /etc/rc.d/rc.local with the command:
Code:
Code:
It worked flawlessly. I use the very same configuration on my home server, never had a glitch.
From the "distant" machine, I get this error when I try to connect:
Code:
Unable to connect to VNC server
What has changed so it no longer works? I assume its not a network problem since the machines are all located in my home network and there is no firewall or router in between them.

I wanted some input on chronic problems with Ubuntu:
1. Why does wireless almost never work right on Ubuntu?
2. Why, when Ubuntu just decides to turn off my wireless card, can I not just turn it back on?
3. Why do tar balls almost never unpack right?
4. Why are printer drivers so buggy?
5. Why do my MP3 players and digital cameras not work with Ubuntu?
I spent 3 hours last night trying to unpack a tar.bz2 file so I can run my Ralink network card. It worked fine until my son unplugged my computer. Now my card is disconnected and it will not reconnect. When I check forums no one has a simple answer for something as simple as turning a network card back on. On my Apple, it's simple: click my wireless icon and hit "on." tell me an easy way to just turn my wireless card back on, it would renew my faith a little in Linux.

Since removing the deprecated usblp driver from my kernel I no longer have a /dev/lp0 device, or /dev/usb/lp0. I use these for sending files directly to my printer. Should these be created by udev? If so, why might they not be being created? If not, how can I get a persistent device name for my usb printer?

I have a Epson Stylus SX115 All In One Printer which i connected to ubuntu 9.10 the other day. Upon installation the drivers for the stylus SX 115 were not available, but there were drivers for the stylus SX110 which i then installed. Printing is fine although for some reason even though i connect via usb cable the printer is not detected as a external device. I have to pull out the usb cable without unmounting-what should i do?

After I finished the upgrade, everything is running super slow (I'm actually writing this on my Vista). One thing that I did different during the installation process was keeping my grub's menu.lst file intact so it's the same as it was before (still showing 9.04 on the title). Should I completely reformat my ubuntu partition and install 9.10 from scratch??? (I have a feeling I do)

Today I experienced an weird functioning of rpm on ubuntu. In general, to install any software on ubuntu we use "apt-get" command, but, the problem with it is that it will install the latest version of that software present in the repository. For installing the older versions of the particular software, "apt-get" is not useful. Today I wanted to install the java 1.4 version on my box. I downloaded the rpm.bin file from the oracle Sun site. let us assume that the name of the downloaded file is java1.4.rpm.bin. To convert the file into an rpm format I gave the following command ./java1.4.rpm.bin. This command showed a list of terms and conditions and after accepting, it generated the rpm file java1.4.rpm.
Then I gave the command rpm -ivh java1.4.rpm. After executing this command, I expected java to be installed but it gave me an error like "rpm: please use alien to install rpm packages on Debian, if you are really sure use --force-debian switch. See README.Debian for more details." When I do the following steps same-to-same on redhat and when I gave the command ./java1.4.rpm.bin, java got installed automatically and environmental variable was created. I do not know why ubuntu is not supporting the rpm packages. If we want to use "apt-get" then we have to see the alternative way of installing the older versions of any software.

I have a printer that is not getting a device node assigned at boot. The printer is attached with a USB to Parallel (IEEE-1284) adapter cable. When I plug in the usb cable when the machine is running, the printer is assigned the device node: /dev/usb/lp0
I am guessing that during startup, the printer device is not detected since it is plugged in over an adapter cable which may be considered a device in itself? This is for a retail store, and we rely on the printer to pop the cash drawer open, so it kinda has to work without a "secret handshake".Unfortunately our workstations do not have Parallel ports. I would be happy to share terminal output, udev info, I'll write you a poem but I could sure use a helping hand- I'm stumped!

I installed Kubuntu 9.04 recently which I thought was jaunty, but my apt sources list had Karmic Koala as the repos. Updater told me 9.1 was available so I used updater to upgrade my system. Normally I'd use apt-get dist-upgrade. Since then, apt-get / amarok and updater won't access the all the repos. Apt-get stalls at ip 32.1.3.136.

I would like to ask something. Today my network Internet access suddenly slowed down, after inspecting the problem the hard way we disconnected one of our servers(ip=190, debian squeeze) from network and the network was alright again. When we plugged it back in, following symptoms were observed: computer 190 pinged gateway app. each 6th time. gateway(debian lenny) pinged computer 190 app each 6th time whole network Internet access was slowed down, local network functioned just fine
While pinging themselves, i ran iptraf on icmp packets on gateway and I saw what i thought was ping attack, lots of echo request coming from external address to computer 190. Blocking that address in iptables didn't help but restarting the gateway did, network Internet conenction is at full speed and gateway and computer 190 ping just fine.
My question is, what steps should I undertake in similar case (it's second time in 2 months) - to debug similar problems. Is it even possible for ping DOS to this kind of damage?

I am running Ubuntu on an Acer 5742 laptop and running XP on Oracle Virtual box and plugged in externally (keyboard, mouse etc...) I have lost ability on both the laptop numeric keyboard (only the numeric keys) and the external keyboard when plugged in. This happened while I was working in Virtual box and running Windows XP.
When the laptop is on its own the numeric keyboard doesn't work (only numeric keys) either. I have toyed with the number lock and I have un-installed and re-installed both"keyboard input methods" and "input method switcher" within Ubuntu software centre to with no change. Not that I bought the damn computer for the numeric keyboard but it should work.

My hard drive's file system has become totally mucked up. I had a few partitions on it, 0 is XP, 1 is vista, 2 is Debian, and 3 is the data. I know that it's this hard drive because when I disconnect it, any liveCD runs ok. After failing to boot puppy linux (liveCD), xp (bootmgr not found), debian (ended in kernal panic), I tried GPARTED. The xp and vista partitions are listed as existing, but they show a problem flag, gparted says they are corrupt, and they are not listed as having a start, end, or any data. However, the main data partition does list a start, end, size, and data space used.
I need to either format those or get into something that will let me access the data partition. Gparted either hangs on boot or doesn't recognise the mouse so I can't reformat the bad partitions. Are there any programs that will ignore the bad partitions and let me access the good ones? Any time I go into a linux distro it either ends up in kernel panic or the mouse doesn't respond. It's hard to explain. With GPARTED, sometimes it hangs at the third line, sometimes it fails at "mounting hard drives", and sometimes it makes it to the GUI but I can't use the mouse. Debian alternates between these as well.
If I keep trying it looks like I can boot, and it will recognise the partitions, but I can't use the mouse. I'm kind of familar with bash, is there a way to start up the terminal with no gui? If I could get a terminal up with a hotkey in the GUI or just start up from a terminal (no gui), I could type mv dev/sda3/ or whatnot. If I could get into a terminal of gparted I could format the bad parts of the drive to see if that would work. Otherwise it looks like I'm going to have to zero out the drive with the WD diag tool. The data isn't life or death, but it would save me some time.

When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

My printer is connected to another PC. If I run Windoze I can do a network connect, but with Linux, even though I've set up the samba connection I can't print. If I send a print job I can hear the printer "getting the info", but then it just hangs. Having to load the print job onto a thumb drive, shoving the drive into the host PC, etc. is not what a PC geek wants to do.

I have tried all the usual stuff like: apt-get cups-pdf and similar things.
Of course I use the proper way (like sudo, etc.) The point is I can't print PDF files. Have a look at the image:
<snip>
I have also modified to the cups-pdf.conf file and have directed it to /home/{USER}/PDF And yes the aforementioned folder (i.e. PDF) exists at its proper place.
So I think the main problem is "P2POutputStream" error which you can see in the image.
