Ubuntu :: Does Windows Image Backup All Partitions?
Jan 17, 2011It says "This backup could take up 172 GB of hard drive space" and my C: "Used space" is at about 172 GB. So will the Ubuntu partition be backed up?

Sep 21, 2010I plan on creating a backup of my Windows installation using DriveImage XML (unless you have a better idea ) then wiping my hard drive clean, creating a new partition for the backup install to live, and then installing Ubuntu on another partition. Is there a method of restoring my Windows backup to partition 1 by using the live cd? Then of course I can install ubuntu to partition 2.

Aug 23, 2010I've bought an Eee with WindowsXP preinstalled. Naturally my first thought was to exorcise the demon (Windows) with cross, stake and holy-water (and perhaps some garlic), but since I've already have paid for it, I was wondering if I can chuck it elsewhere... My thought is to use dd to make a raw-image of the harddisk -- either the complete harddisk (e.g. /dev/sda) or the partition with Windows (e.g. /dev/sda1) -- compress it (it should be mostly nothing, right), and store the image on some other drive. I don't expect any trouble with this... What I wonder about, is if it will be possible to restore Windows from such an image -- e.g. dd-ing the uncompressed image back to the disk, (probably) using the whole disk (/dev/sda)... Will it work? Or is there something that will prevent it from working? I intend to make a full image of the disk; MBR, partition-table, partitions and all... It's a rather small harddisk, so I' opting-out dual-boot... (besides, it's not like I intend to use Windows...)

Feb 9, 2011I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I tried to reinstall Ubuntu 10.8 with no success, & also XP with "R" for repair again with no success.

Jan 6, 2010If I use Clonezilla to backup my Ubuntu partition I get all sorts of problems trying to re-install Grub2 after image reinstall. If I backup the whole HD will this include Grub so when I re-install the image I get the whole thing back again?

Fedora :: Restored Partitions From Backup / Now HAL Fails
Jan 12, 2010I was trying to do a yum update from F10 to F11, which I screwed up early, but decided to try to fix along the way. I eventually gave up, and decided to restore the system from backup and restart the process.Thing is, however I try to do this, the HAL daemon fails on bootup, which prevents the system from properly going into runlevel 5. It actually does boot to the KDE login screen, but then refuses mouse or keyboard input.
The file systems look right after restore, and I have used this backup and restore procedure many times successfully. It's just a simple tar copy of the individual file systems: boot, root, usr and var. I also backup /home, but had no reason to restore it. tmp is also a mounted fs.At first, I simply overwrote the existing filesystems with the backup data, but thinking this is what was causing the problem, I recreated the file systems and restored to bare metal. Same problem.After that, i thought that perhaps the problem was that I'd only restored boot, root and usr (not var) not realizing that var is important to HAL, so I then erased and restored var. Same problem.The next logical move would be to erase and restore all four file systems simultaneously, but in addition to being very time consuming, I'm not sure it will do any good. Plus, the problem itself has become interesting.I also know that any sane person would have done a fresh install from the F11 disks by now, but what fun would that be? I can't help but feel there's a simple solution I'm overlooking. Any Ideas?Special bonus question: Due to some hardware changes, the default network device (eth0) no longer actually exists on this box. The actual network device is now eth1. Any idea how I can bring this up in runlevel 3 so I can at least get the damn thing back on the network?

From within Linux, what's the most risk-free way of imaging these two partitions and saving them to a single image file or archive? I want to preserve the entire partition because I have no idea what I may have forgotten to copy. What is the most suitable program that can do this?
Is there any way to run the partition in a virtual machine at a later date?
After this is done, I want to delete those old partitions and extend my Linux ones.

May 13, 2011To make a very low level backup of my laptop prior to upgrading it, I decided to create an iso of the harddisk; while it is doing this, but a bit too far to just cancel and start anew, so I cannot test it out right now I decided to post here.
of course, there are partitions on /dev/sda (there's a swap for example)I may (am pretty damn sure I will) want to access the files within the iso, and that's where I wonder how to tackle that; I'm thinking along the lines of setting up a loopback device (losetup) but I don't think that that will be enough to recognize the partitions. Any thoughts? (or just re-create an image of /dev/sda1 ?)

Oct 1, 2010I have decided to remove Windows from my disk, but I want to keep my current install of Ubuntu.
One possibility that sprang to mind was to make an image out of my Ubuntu install.
Since I dual boot, the disk is numbered "SDA2" (extended) "SDA5" (root) and then there is Swap. (Windows is the first part of the disk)
One question sprang to mind:
If I make an image out of it, what happens to the numbers? Will there be any conflicts? Not to mention the question of which program would be best (and easiest to use, preferably with a GUI, since I want to save time, not learn code).
And if I would go for a binary dump to an external disk (to put it back when the destination disk is empty), would the same problems arise? Or would that bring even more problems, like the issue of the swap partition, which I would have to receate, since it wouldn't fit on the "dump disk"?
This is all because the whole thing sounds very similar to placing the ubuntu partition to the front of the disk, which, as I have been told, is not a good idea.

CentOS 5 :: How To Restore From Image Backup
Apr 21, 2011I have 4 different servers with exactly the same hardware. I set up one of them to have a centos install with all the basic stuff I'd like running on each one. I then created an image of the harddrive with the operating system, and stored it on an external drive. I used dd to copy the external image to one of the new machines. It worked fine, everything booted up as normal and with a few tweaks everything was great. The problem is that the drive is rather large (500gb) and it takes days for dd to copy it over. I decided to try a different route, I booted to a usb (using the linux distro on the ultimate boot cd pre-loaded with gparted). There are two partitions on the external drive, a small (100mb) partition which can easily be copied over with gparted, and the larger 480+gb lvm partition.
Gparted doesn't support lvm, so I used fdisk to create a new lvm partition on the new machine, and then pvcreate/vgcreate/lvcreate to re-create the same volume groups/logical volumes that are in the image on the external harddrive. I rsync'ed all the information over from LogVol00, and made the same swap partition LogVol01 (which took WAY less time). I disconnected the hard drive and renamed the volume group to VolGroup00 (initiall I named it differently, since linux doesn't like having the volume groups named the same). I can mount the LogVol00 partition and see all the files as they should be. But when I try and boot up, it doesn't even go to grub, I just end up with a blank screen and blinking cursor. How to make the drive bootable? Alternatively, a better strategy than using dd to restore this image??

General :: Creating Image Of Drive Partitions
Jan 6, 2011I have what I thought was a simple task of creating ISO images of my Windows 7 system partion and boot partiton (the C drive) on my physical hard drive that I could use to load Windows 7 onto a virtual machine. Anyway, I'm running Ubuntu off the CD drive and I can see my drive partions (checked using the fdisk -l command). I have tried many iterations of the mkisofs command, but no matter what I do I get the error message: unable to open disk image file 'dev/sdb/win7sys.iso'. I don't understand why it's trying to open an ISO file it is supposed to be creating. The -o FILE option sets the output file name, so the message makes no sense to me. Below is an example of a simple and longer version with more options that I have tried to create an image of my sytem partiton (sda1) and save it on an external drive (sdb) with the file name: win7sys.iso (the next step I think would be to create or merge both partition images as one iso file for the VM). But I can't get past this error.
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

* Note that the output after the -o parameter is the desired destination /dev/sdb (my external drive) for the image file and /dev/sda1 is my Windows 7 system or boot partition (sda2 is what Windows sees as the C drive).
