I ran Computer Janitor and I thought it deleted things I don't use anymore so I deleted those things and I read somewhere that Computer Janitor does delete important things, how can I be sure that I didn't delete anything important?
View 7 RepliesThis is a bit weird,but in thinking about cleaning up my hdd, which has a single install of 10.04/EMC2 on it,I took my first look at Computer Janitor.When it opened, it seemed amazingly basic, in fact just two panes with no indication of what the few entries were indicating.The "About" tag in the Help menu indicated that it was version 1.13.3, but Synaptic tells me that version 1.14.1 is installed.A bit of reading in the Forum suggests that this is not highly thought of, anyway, so I shall leave it alone.As I'm currently having other issues with this installation, and am about to do a clean install, I thought I'd drop this pebble in the pond, and learn a bit more before my next turn around.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just ran Computer Janitor on my computer and I think it broke Synaptic. The program was cleaning up some files, but then it froze halfway through and I had to force it to quit. Since then, I can't open Synaptic package manager, the Ubuntu Software Center, nor Computer Janitor itself. When I do they either freeze and I have to force them to quite or they just don't show up on the screen, but they're stuck running in the background because System Monitor reports the processor is running at 100% and so I have to go in manually and kill the bad processes running in the background. Restarting doesn't change anything.Running Lucid Lynx on a HP dc7100, P4 3.2 Ghz, 2gb RAM.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI ran the Computer Janitor to clean things up a bit, and found that the list of "unused" items is pretty long, ~141.Among the items listed, I found Maxima, Pari-GP and Gnuplot, which are used by Sage, which I use all the time.Is this possibly a mistake? I'm currently using a binary form of Sage, rather than the one available via apt, so maybe these aren't currently being used?Also listed were cpython, ipython and a lot of python-*; does that seem right?

View 6 Replies View Relatedive got a windows partition and a ubuntu-10.10 partition. i just tried to reinstall windows on the first one - but things didn't work out properly. after the first restart the pc just hung in the first boot screen - it wouldn't boot from the windows cd or the harddrive. every time i restart the computer it just hangs in that screen. i can't even choose to boot from cd/usb to use a livecd and rescue my files on the ubuntu partition. its like the keyboard doesn't work anymore. ive tried both a usb keyboard and one of the old kind with the prongs. so i cant get into ubuntu.
here's the screen, it pops up a second after i restart. usually the pc just boots up a couple seconds later and i can choose beteen win/unbuntu; or i can just press 'esc' and choose to boot from usb. but now nothing is happening, the keyboard doesn't seem to work, and it wont go passed this screen.*edit* actually the keyboard is working, because ctrl-alt-del restarts the computer, but thats about it..
I just installed Debian, after having some experience as a Ubuntu and Mint user. I'm not sure if this is normal, but my installation didn't include neither 'make' nor ' gcc', which I thought were very basic programs. They where in the cd though, I installed them through apt. I realized that they weren't there when I tried to install the drivers for a D Link DWA 525 wireless card. I was able to install the drivers on Ubuntu, but I can't do it on Debian. When I try to 'make' it, there is an error. I don't recall the exact error (since I have to reboot back and forth in order to get internet access, I won't post it right now).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 11 on a server with 2 equal sized disks. I used the gui installer and didn't make custom setting changes to the partitions. One of the steps asked for me to choose the disks i wanted to use for this installation. I selected both disks and after the installation Fedora only sees one volume the size of both disks combined.Do I now have software raid0 or do I have something else?

since I've updated my computer to natty amd-64 it didn't turn off. The blue Kubuntu-Screen appears. When I move to TTY1 I will somtimes see the message I'm going to halt now and somtimes a message that some Runlevel Processes will be killed. But the computer will never turn off.

I accidentally removed windows when I was installing debian so I would really love to get rid of it because its not supportive with a lot programs and games I was using on windows. I have a Dell Netbook which came with Ubuntu Linux 8.3 (I think) in 2008. The drive is a SSD 3gb unit and the drive was nearly full when I received it. There was only 758mb free on the drive and I wondered why they would sell a computer with so little free space on it. When the updates was installed the drive was full. Is there a way to retrieve some space on the drive without deleting programs which came with the computer? I have tried ordering a new drive online without getting one, including Dell itself. In Windows you can delete old files which will free up some space and is wondering if the same thing is possible under Linux?

I would like to make a bash script that does this automatically and having trouble with it. Note that I am writing my very first bash script. What I need to do is make a script to delete the following:
Delete everything in /home/$exp$num/$dir
when "exp" could be either "rt", "ic" or "sp".
"num" could run from 1(single digit) to 45 and dir is "profile" and "work".
This is what I tried to write:

After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!
Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo to Canonical. But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT. Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out) I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume. I also cannot make my computer hibernate, and if I try to put it to sleep when it's on critical power, it will continue waking up again until it runs so hard out of power it just dies.

I used to have Windows Vista on it, but over time, I believe it became clogged with too many programs and so I wiped the hard drive and installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS about 2 weeks ago. However, ubuntu many times seems to run slower than vista did. I have 4 GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3MB Cache, 800MHz FSB), 320GB HDD, 128MB nVIDIA GeForce 8400M. Ubuntu recognizes me as having dual processors at 2.1 GHz and 3.4GB RAM, but when I'm watching a simple video, whether online or locally on the computer, my CPU usage invariably jumps to 100% and it lags. Sometimes, even simple word processing makes it slow significantly.
