Hardware :: Connect My Computer To Tv - Use HDMI Or Make It Work?
Nov 26, 2010
I'm triying to connect my computer to my tv and im trying with the HDMI. I connected the cable to the computer and to the tv and it all worked fine. But when i click on my tv the HDMI 1, nothing shows?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 in a Dell XPS M1330 laptop with Intel gma X3100 integrated graphics. I occasionally use it for watching movies in an LCD TV, however when I connect it I can get it to output video fine, but audio is a no go, when I select hdmi audio in the sound options I get no sound.
I'm having problem to get my sound work on my HTPC based on Asus AT5IONT-I Deluxe motherboard. I can get analogue sound out but not the digital sound on HDMI nor optical. I have tried a couple of things I've found on swedish forums, but nothing have worked so I'm ready to start over again from the beginning. I'm a real beginner when it comes to Ubuntu so step by step instructions is preferred. code...
I've seen this problem on dozens of different forums but I haven't found anybody with my specific problem or a solution that has worked. I have an nVidia GeForce 8400GS which I just installed in my Debian box and I can't get the HDMI audio to work. Kernel version is 2.6.32-5-amd64, nvidia driver version is 260.19.36, alsa version is 1.0.21. Output of lsmod shows that nvidia module is loaded. Output of aplay -l code...
I feel like I've looked everywhere on the internet for a solution to this and I just can't find one. It seems that everybody is able to see their nVidia audio device using aplay -l and then the solution goes from there.
I just purchased a new notebook, namely an HP Pavilion dv6, with a GeForce GT 230M. Also, I have a neat 1920x1200 display with an HDMI connector, which fits nicely with the corresponding outlet on the computer. Now I'd like the external display to be the main display when connected, with the internal display as an expansion to the desktop, and the internal display should, obviously, be primary when on its own.
The reality looks quite different: Not too surprising, with the default drivers I got only a 800x600 resolution, but with the correct drivers installed, I got the full resolution on the integrated display. My external HDMI-display, however, is dead. With the xorg.conf file being obsolete I can't really use the configuration app by nvidia, can I?
i want to connect my laptop to the lcd using hdmiI have nvidia video card 9200 gs and the driver is installedafter connecting both together nothing happens!do i have to change anything in the system or display settings?
My Netbook is ASUS EeePc HA900, I already use Ubuntu 10.04 is ok, nothing problems, then I upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10, it is still Ok. But when I upgrade to ubuntu 11.04, it have problems with Wifi, when I connect Internet via Wifi, just input the Password, it make my computer slow to halt, and have to turn the power off to shutdown the computer.
I need to be able to log into (with X enabled) my home computer (running OpenSuse 11.4) from my work computer(running Windows XP). I was originally going to setup ssh on my home computer but then realized that I wouldn't be able to get my desktop this way.At work, we use windows remote desktop connection to log into other computers within our network, but I'm planning on asking my manager if I'm allowed to login to my home computer. If he accepts, I need a method to actually make it happen.I looked at FreeNX which seemed awesome but it doesn't seem to have windows support. To an extent that I would like to only allow my work IP to be allowed to even try an login. The bridge to cross here is the fact that I'm connecting from windows.
I have a G62 HP laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I have updated alsa and everything else I can think of. When I have an HDMI coard plugged in, sound only comes out of the computer (I use VLC).
I have a small 'nettop' computer that only has a HDMI output. The only monitors I have only have VGA input. Is there a way to use a HDMI-to-VGA or HDMI-to-DVI + DVI-to-VGA connection setup to hookup this computer to my monitor?Let me make it clear that I am not looking for a high-quality, high-definition display. This is going to be hooked up to a monitor only until I have the system up and running and then it'll be a ssh-only headless server
In fedora or centos linux is it possible to connect HDMI camera to HDMI capture device [url]. And get the video for playback from Linux? Or still there will be driver issues?
I'm trying to connect my Xbox 360 to my Laptop via HDMI cable, so that I can use Xbox ony my laptop's screen.
I connected my Latop to my Xbox 360 by HDMI cable, but nothing happens, I was expecting the screen to auto-switch or something, so I went to the monitors GUI and tried to find settings there - unsuccessfuly.
Though I had solved this but I was premature. Here are the details. When I use HDMI to connect to my lcd TV it works fine in Windows7. (I have dual partitions W7/Ubuntu),but when I boot into Ubuntu and use HDMI, nothing happens.
lori@lori-laptop:~$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

also when I open the Gnome Alsa Mixer, under the HDMI tab, there is just a blank screen. I believe I have the latest Alsa releases.
I went out to buy myself an nVidia G210 yesterday in order to play Quake Wars. I installed the 260.19 (latest from RPMFusion) nVidia drivers and 3D effects worked along with the game. What didn't work is the sound. I am using an HDMI cable to connect my monitor to the computer. It seems as though ALSA is not letting the digital stream through because when I play an audio file in Rhythmbox, PulseAudio Volume Control shows that the speakers are blasting music. This is strange, since nothing is coming out.
aplay -l: Quote: [alex@alex01 ~]$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 1: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1
[Code]...
I am currently employing card 2, device 3 in my PulseAudio configuration (/etc/pulse/default.pa). How can I make ALSA read the digital stream from my HDMI cable?
Off and on for some time now I've been using a Toshiba x205-s9359 laptop with (11.4/KDE4.6) during the day as a general purpose laptop using the onboard LCD and in the evenings to run XBMC to play movies on a TV using an HDMI cable (no cable TV on our little island & Satellite TV is poor in the rainy season).
The video card is an NVidia GeForce 8700M GT with NVidia's proprietary driver v. 275.09.07 (installed the "hard way").
Audio info:
Code: ~> aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC268 Analog [ALC268 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[Code]....
Now the Audio/Video both go to the TV via HDMI if it's connected prior to boot, if not the laptop works normally.
If you try this with XBMC don't forget to go to set the XBMC settings to "HDMI" as needed.
MythTV Records fine but will not play the recorded shows and I can not watch or open the TV. Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS lucid Runing a pcHDTV HD-5500 Video card Using on Board Video from an Asus M3A78-EM with onboard ATI Radeoon 3200

I have Gateway P-7807u laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed, it has HDMI output and I use it to connect to my TV-set. The problem is - not working sound via HDMI, in sound preferences I've chosen duplex digital output, but no success, but picture works well.
I am having trouble getting sound to work through hdmi, I changed the device in the kde settings for multimedia and it now works in Amarok but Mplayer and VLC are refusing.
This is the error i am getting with mplayer:
I have disabled my sound card in the bios to save confusion (on my part) Upgraded my kernel to 2.6.37. My gfx card is a NV gt 430 xt
I have Lenovo SL500 with ubuntu 10.10. Also i have installed latest GeForce 9300M GS drivers from NVIDIA site. NVTV is also installed. When i want to connect to LG 32LE4500 trough HDMI i get no singnal message. I tried to configure with nvidia-settings but no positive results. Also i have tried with bigger SAMSUNG screen but no results... am i doing something wrong? Or, is this problem with NVIDIA (or ubuntu) HDMI support. If it is, where can i find information when will be bigger support for HDMI with NVIDIA and ubuntu?
visit the link [URL] and read specifically the HDMI Audio section. Don't worry if you are unable to test for the sound. Connect the HDMI cable from the laptop to your LCD tv. This should be trivial. Make sure you switch your TV to HDMI input from its menu options. After enabling the HDMI configurations on your laptop using Step 1. Click on System--> Preferences --> Sound. Click on the Hardware tab. By default it might be set to Analog Stereo Duplex. Go to Output tab. Change the Connector drop down from Analog Speakers to Analog Headphones. Go back to Hardware tab and select Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output. Function+F5 would direct the video output to your TV. Incase you have a problem redirecting your video output to the TV. Restart your machine with the HDMI cable connected to your TV. With the configurations you would be able to hear sound from your TV. Have a blast! I have tried this with Acer 5738 it might work with other Laptop configurations as well.
I am trying to install Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 on a System using a Radeon HD based graphics card with HDMI output connected to a HUGE TV. The Ubuntu installer does not appear to support this setup.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with an EVGA nForce 730i Intel mobo with onboard HDMI. Video output works. Audio output does not. I'm trying to output both to a Samsung HDTV.
I tried booting to a bootable drive with Ubuntu 11.04, and no audio.
I've essentially tried everything in every other thread. I'm using alsa mixer, I've muted S/PDIF, my settings all have HDMI output selected.
sudo modprobe snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi results in:

Also tried aplay -D to play a .wav, and heard no sound, but also encountered no errors.
I just got a new Dell monitor (U2715H), and even with beta Nvidia driver (355.06) on Debian testing x86_64, it doesn't detect highest resolution (2560x1440) when connected over HDMI to Nvidia Geforce GT 620. I have an HDMI 2.0 compliant cable, and according to Dell reps, the monitor should support 2560x1440 over HDMI.
Some suggested using xrandr to set the video mode explicitly. I tried doing it, and first got a EDID file with nvidia-settings, and run edid-decode. Where is what I got there:
Code: Select allDetailed mode: Clock 241.500 MHz, 597 mm x 336 mm 2560 2608 2640 2720 hborder 0 1440 1443 1448 1481 vborder 0 +hsync -vsync
So I used those values to make a new mode in xrandr:
Code: Select allX Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode) Serial number of failed request: 31 Current serial number in output stream: 32
I occasionally use a DisplayPort->HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my AV-Receiver, however I only get the picture to the AV-Receiver, but no sound. I read that not all DisplayPort->HDMI cables support sound, so I tested Windows7 on the same machine and it transmitted sound over that cable just fine. So I conclude that it is a Linux driver problem.
So I generally wonder whether this can be made to work easily or not. Does anyone here have experiences with this topic, especially with nvidia graphics cards managing the display port? (I did find older posts about HDMI audio, but they were all concerned with ATI graphics.)
pavucontrol / phonon do list a "High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)"-device, but sending sound to it does not do a thing. Furthermore, my dell laptop only has a displayport, but no HDMI connector.
