Ubuntu :: MPlayer Blank And Will Not Close?
Apr 5, 2010
I opened MPlayer, two boxes opened, both a blank and will not close. System manager does not show it and "ALT-F2" typed xkill and clicked on bottom tray button does nothing. I opened second MPlayer and it closed but not first one.

2.6.34.6-54.fc13.i686mplayer is install. Most of what I find on the web is playable but if someone sends me a wmv file, I save it and run > mplayer abc.wmv. mplayer pops up, looks like everything is ..... and just sits there - black screen - click on the play> button - blink - nothing.

This should be a very elementary question. I have a URL like http://SERVERNAME/file.wmv. When I enter it in "Open Location" in gnome-mpLayer it connects to the server and plays the stream. But when I run
mplayer "URL"
in the terminal I get a crazy endless loop of
Playing URL.
Resolving SERVERNAME for AF_INET6...
Couldn't resolve name for AF_INET6: SERVERNAME
Resolving SERVERNAME for AF_INET...
Connecting to server SERVERNAME[xxx.xx.xxx.xx]: 80...
Cache size set to 320 KBytes
I think my usage of mplayer in the terminal is correct, since I can watch other URL's.It's only this specific one that doesn't work (I am not authorized to write the URL because they want it to be private. So my question is: Does anyone know why I get this loop? Or is it possible to see how mplayer is called by gnome-mplayer and what output messages it generates?I use gnome-mplayer 0.9.9.2 and mplayer 1.0rc4-4.4.5 on Ubuntu 10.10.

When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.
Specs:
Toshiba P205-S6337 Laptop
Ubuntu Karmic Koala
2.39 GB of RAM

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

Is there a way of closing just 1 folder. I open documents folder then open a folder that's in documents then open a folder that's in the 2nd folder, if I want to close any of those folders it closes all of them. I know I can right click on a folder and select open in a new window which I then can close without closing all folders,is there a setting that let's you always open folders in a new window by double clicking on the folder?

This is probably a really simple fix but tbh since I installed unity I'm stumped.
I didnt like the unity desktop so I've gone back to the classic desktop but I have no bar above my windows with the max/min/close option.
To add to that issue, sometimes windows open with their menus under the panel at the top of the screen so there is no way to move or close them

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04. But I have a problem. I am not able to close the apps or programs I open. The bar with the close, minimize and ( fill screen botton, what ever ) is gone! I'm not quite sure what I did.. I enabled the Cube in compiz, and the wobbily windows, and then the bar dissapeared. I put everything back to what it was, but the top bar on the widows is gone.

I'm running Ubuntu in a virtual machine inside win7. I've installed the game FreeCol, played a bit and when i try to quit the game doesn't close. I can continue playing but i'm basically trap in the application. Is there any keyboard command i can use to force quiting the application? Or any other idea on how to proceed? Could it be a limitation of the virtualization?

If I Ctl-W, it sometimes closes a tab and other times it has no effect. This relates to browser windows. If I select the command from the menu in FF, it always works and then the next Ctl-W works. The first Ctl-W closes a tab too. There is no obvious pattern, sometimes a sequence of Ctl-Ws will close a series of tabs.
Tried a new keyboard, but that didn't make any difference. Other browsers, even in a VMware window running Win 7, shows the same behavior. However, once a long sequence of tabs were closed without any problem with Safari in Win 7.

Upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 recently. (Now that was a mistake...) Problem occurring now that when I close lid of my laptop (Asus K40IN series) , which I set to suspend, it won't wake up (and I have to shut down and reboot). It used to be fine (in both Windows and 10.04) though so must've something to do with the upgrade to 10.10.

This makes me feel like a total n00b but I'm trying to figure out how to replace an XML close tag (such as </pagenum> ) with the same XML close tag followed by yet another close tag. (I want every occurrence of '</pagenum>' to be replaced with '</pagenum></p>').
I've tried using something like this:
Code:
sed 's/</pagenum>/</pagenum></p>/' old.xml new.xml
What am I missing? Please forgive me. I'm diving head first into RegEx.

I was having a problem with the tabs in Firefox 4, on Ubuntu 11.04 x64. No matter what I did, whether it was clicking the "X" button, hitting Ctrl+W, looking for a "Close Tab" option in the menus, I couldn't close any tabs in Firefox 4. I started disabling extensions, and first, I disabled the "Global Unity Integration" extension, and lo and behold, after a restart of Firefox, the problem is no more.

Also I'm sure i am hardly, barely, not even almost reaching the full potential of Linux recording,is their anyone who9 could explain something that annoying?Sorry to be asking so much.I have been a musician and songwriter for over 20 years and due to my illness i never could quite record, but thanks to you guys my dreams are coming true!

I shut down using ALT + SYSRQ + R, S, E, I, U, then B for a soft shutdown. I have used Ubuntu before, but this is a fresh install after having problems with the computer. Computer is a Dell 2400.

I'm having a problem running Mplayer in Ubuntu 9.1. I've installed and uninstalled several times. Mplayer refuses to open from the applications menu.n I attempt to open from terminal it comes up with the following: mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libavcodec.so.52: file too short I've also tried other players such as Gnome Mplayer to play the video and it plays really fast with no audio or video. This has really been the only problem i've run into since switching from windows to linux two weeks ago.
