I just installed ubuntu 10.4 and when I close my laptop, it does not go to sleep. The hard drive is still on and the computer is still working even after I have closed it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I clean installed the netbook remix of 10.04 , all went well, until I removed the power cable.
While off mains the netbook will randomly sleep, I really can't seem to find a trigger for it.
In the power settings I have changed various options to alter this but nothing seems to affect this.
This machine had xp on previously without a similar problem, so I am ruling out a faulty lid trigger. (Doesn't happen with powered on mains)
I have a Hitachi SimpleDrive (LS-1000-EMEA) it has an "Auto-sleep" function which I believe is controlled by the enclosure itself.The problem I'm having is that when the drive goes to sleep Ubuntu does not seem to be able to wake it up again. I am running Karmic 9.10 as a stripped down install with XBMC as a front-end. I cannot access the drive at all when it does this.
I'm not sure if the problem is that the drive is formatted as NTFS. I notice that when the drive is connected to my Mac or PC it resumes no problem (with a slight delay as the drive gets out of standby) but with Ubuntu it just seems to stop responding. When I reboot the drive is not mounted by Ubuntu. Physically, the blue LED indicator on the drive is frozen (i.e. lit-up) rather than flashing as it normally would. I have to actually unplug (from the mains) and plug it back in for it to work.I have tried using sdparm, but as I say I think the sleep function is controlled by the enclosure and thus sdparm gives me no standby options.
I put power settings to never, but the screen still goes to sleep and moving the mouse you have to login.What I really want is no login screen, and I suppose if you were watching a vid it would go dark?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was using wicd on a spotty network, the house blocked a lot of the signal from moving around, so wicd was having major issues with that AP. Later I was trying to connect to another AP but wicd couldn't connect plus it was saying the spotty network's name was the one it was connecting to. Although I didn't try before I left/gave up I'm sure a restart of the wicd daemon would have solved it.
But why is this even the case? is there something I could add to the scripts that would clear this issue up? (I also submitted a bug on wicd's launchpad project but haven't gotten any response... I hope this isn't a 'feature')
I've got the new beta working in ubuntu 64 bit lucid 10.4. But, I have to go to admin/sys monitor and end the boxee "sleeping" process B4 it will start again after exiting The app? Id sure like to fix it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAssume: 1) Multi-cpu environment 2) Process that gets interrupted, is the same process that executes the interrupt handler, so I guess technically nothing gets interrupted except what the process was doing before, but it is still executing as it is executing the handler. 3) There is no top or bottom half, when an interrupt takes place the handler is invoked, executes, then return from interrupt, simple as that.
Why would sleeping the handler (puts in sleep queue, context switch to next runnable process) be a bad idea?
I would like to mount my mp3 player (sdb) without waking up the sleeping SATA disk sda. Attaching mp3 player does not wake sda up, but mounting it does. My system is mostly Slackware 11, so I'm still on kernel 2.4.

The krusader only go away if I use killall. This is occurring in more than one machine. I'm using squeeze gnome 64 bits.

I've created an LiveUSB disk with the USBcreator method in Windows 7.Now the the image is copied succesfully and the USB key is bootable.However when the boot window popsup and I select the verify & boot option, a graphical loading window comes up and right after that the system halts with the error message "Sleeping forever".What am I doing wrong? I have a problem where the live cd gives this error message:
Boot failure, sleeping forever.
I've downloaded Fedora 12 and decided to try and install it on my old laptop which is currently running Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems.
When I boot from the live cd, it starts to load with the 3 bars on the bottom, one on top of the other, one is white, one is dark blue, the other is in between those colours in the spectrum somewhere....
Anyway, the load bars complete and "Fedora 12" turns white, then the following output populates:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_Snapshot_Cow' (<----- repeated a bunch of times) can't mount root filesystem Boot has failed, sleeping forever.
I've taken the kernel 2.6.33.3 and edited the .config file to take out most of the compatibility etc. that I will not be using. I'm run the makes and updated grub. View 8 Replies View RelatedI have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.
Here's the situation:
I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
so here's my problem. I am trying to install windows xp on my computer in virtual machine so i can watch netflix on my computer. The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.
1. How can I stream music from my ubuntu computer (9.10) to my windows computer using vlc?
2. What nvidia driver should I use? The one found in "hardware drivers" is 185 but nvidia's site has 190! which one should I use?
i have 2 computers.both have pidgin messenger with the same accounts (yahoo, msn, aim, facebook...). both can connect at the same time. both connect at startup.both work well.some of the chat protocols disconnect upon sensing multiple connections (as in, when one account signs in from two places).good.others don't.bad.
is there a way to remotely disconnect the OTHER computer's pidgin while using the current computer? while both instances of pidgin are running, the OTHER computer will see all incoming messages on pidgin. anyone at that computer will see a one-sided conversation.simple solution would be to stop them from connecting at startup. that still doesn't solves the problem of "what if i forgot to turn one off" or "what if someone runs pidgin on the other computer."
My wifes networked computer connected to the network just fine when it was Win XP. Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared. So, one computer connects great, the other does not.**I dont know what to do at this point.Here is the layout:My Comp (10.04) ---------......Main Network Comp (XP)Wife Comp (10.04) -------/The main network computer is XP as it has software on it we need that does not work in Wine. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have problems with a very slow workstation (even the mouse movement takes seconds....). Analyzing the processes, I found out that raid related processes are the reason. I have 4 HD, 2 pairs of raid 1. One set of HD covers md0-md3 and one set of HD covers md4-md6. ( run an updated CentOs 5.5 ws) I see that "md0_raid1" process is changing from status "sleeping" to "uninterruptible" about every 4 seconds. I changed one HD in this raid 1 set (which covers md0, md1, md2 and md3). When I only had one HD in this raid 1, there were no such processes (of course there was nothing to mirror to ....)
During the exchanging of one of the HD in this raid 1 set (md0-md3) (which I thought was the bad one)), I removed (by mistake) one HD from the other raid pair (md4-md6), which I now am rebuilding, using the mdadm add command. Checking the process list, they show indeed up as "md5resync" in the process list. Same for md4 and md6. This seems OK. But why do I have these continously recurring "md0_raid1" process in my list, listed as "uninterruptible" ?? What is happeing? When I check with mdadm --detail /dev/md0:

I have two Linux computers and one small home router with DHCP functionality. I configured the router with the "dynamic DHCP" setting, ie, the static DHCP with MAC-Address was not used. Before that, I used the manual IP configuration, defining the two computers' names in the /etc/hosts file.
Example:
10.0.0.2 comp2
10.0.0.3 comp3
Now, with DHCP, the above example is no longer appropriate, because the DHCP server is supposed to tell the computer what IP number it will receive. However, I am missing something, because I haven't figured it out yet how to make one computer know the other computer's name. Is it that I haven't installed a name-finding package? Is there a simple way to accomplish this (one computer finding the other computers' names)?
