ive had ubuntu 8.1 for awile now on my laptop and windows on desktop. ive downloaded lives media maker or movie maker what ever u widh to call it. after opening lives it says i need to download mplayer. i got to the mplayer homepage thur the downloads given here, and dont know what to do. never messed with binary or codes and dont want to realy mess things up. so looking for some advice here. how do i get mplayer on ubuntu?

This should be a very elementary question. I have a URL like http://SERVERNAME/file.wmv. When I enter it in "Open Location" in gnome-mpLayer it connects to the server and plays the stream. But when I run
mplayer "URL"
in the terminal I get a crazy endless loop of

I think my usage of mplayer in the terminal is correct, since I can watch other URL's.It's only this specific one that doesn't work (I am not authorized to write the URL because they want it to be private.So my question is: Does anyone know why I get this loop? Or is it possible to see how mplayer is called by gnome-mplayer and what output messages it generates?I use gnome-mplayer 0.9.9.2 and mplayer 1.0rc4-4.4.5 on Ubuntu 10.10.
I'm having a problem running Mplayer in Ubuntu 9.1. I've installed and uninstalled several times. Mplayer refuses to open from the applications menu.n I attempt to open from terminal it comes up with the following: mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libavcodec.so.52: file too short I've also tried other players such as Gnome Mplayer to play the video and it plays really fast with no audio or video. This has really been the only problem i've run into since switching from windows to linux two weeks ago.

I want the classic mplayer's gui and seems that isn't there after installed. View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to take advantage of VDPAU for playing video files with my ASRock ION 330. As far as I know, MPlayer and VLC both include VDPAU support. Ok then, I managed to make MPlayer work from the command line:
mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau ./filename.mkv
In this way it plays a 720p content smoothly, with under 10% CPU use. Great!The problem is when I try to make this permanent, i.e., configuring the files ~/.mplayer/config and ~/.mplayer/gui.conf.This is what I have in there:

But still, when I open MPlayer from the menu, no matter what file I try to open it gives this ugly message:Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device. I opened MPlayer, two boxes opened, both a blank and will not close. System manager does not show it and "ALT-F2" typed xkill and clicked on bottom tray button does nothing. I opened second MPlayer and it closed but not first one.

I spend hours following a dozen different how tos to get wma, asf, and a techsmtih videos to play. I still can't play asf, or techsmith. The asf plays the video, but there is no audio. The Techsmith flashes the video every so often but the sound works fine. mplayer -vc help says the techsmith codec is working, but it is not.

A recent update to ffmpeg, in which I've learned was an upgrade to the restricted ffmpeg as opposed to the unrestricted default one that is in the official repos, has now made it unable for me to use mplayer or Devede. Reading up about this, especially from here: [URL].. I have learned it's a frequent problem when installing the restricted ffmpeg. Basically what Devede says at startup is:

Devede needs them to work. If you want to use Devede, you must install all of them. Using the terminal to open mplayer (or mencoder), I get this error: mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference From my research, seems as though the problem lies in libavformat52 not being installed (or removed) and libavformat-extra-52 is installed, which is the same thing, but because it's the restricted version, it is called something different. Anybody know if that is correct?
Also, checking up, libavformat-unstripped-52 isn't installed but available, so should I install that to replace the missing libavformat52, as when I sudo aptitude install libavformat52, it says it conflicts with libavformat-extra-52?
I installed libavformat-unstripped-52, which didn't conflict with the already installed libavformat-extra-52, just to see if it would basically just replace the missing libavformat52, which conflicted with libavformat-extra-52 and couldn't be installed safely, but after I did, nothing changed. I still get the same error with opening Devede and mplayer (or mencoder) in the terminal.
Running Lucid Lynx. VLC works fine but Xvmc output uses less CPU on my PIII 750 laptop and isn't supported by VLC. I installed Mplayer but I can't play anything from the Mplayer GUI. I get the message "FATAL: Could not initialize video filters (-vf) or video output (-vo)". The interface is all black so I can't see the controls. I installed Gnome Mplayer GUI and now I have different problems. Playing video files, including VOB files from a DVD works fine. Trying to play a DVD with or without menues does not. I followed the instructions at URL.... What could be wrong?

I'm trying to use mplayer to stream some content from the net to my desktop. This worked fine the first time I did it (though failed dismally on all subsequent occasions. Now, the first umpteen times, I was behind a proxy. Now I am not behind a proxy, but mplayer still looks for the proxy settings. Why? I have changed the proxty settings in the network proxy (applied globally), in Firefox and every where else I can think of. I use the following command:

I have this wma file that I want to play and I looked around and found alot of ways to make this happen. However, none has work for me. But first let me explain my problem. I have these wma files that just wont work but they worked once before. Now when I try to open the files all I get is some message that the file can not be opened. I have done many efforts to make it work including things like medibuntu. BTW, there was this once moment that when I tried to open the file it PLAYED! but then after it did not open.

I'm trying to play a hi-def wmv. I get video and audio, but there is definitely some audio missing. The center channel is gone. I have music and sound effects, but the characters dialog is silent.
I use mplayer to play my media files. Occasionally I want to take screenshots of media I am playing. I use the -vf screenshot option to take screenshots which generates shotxxxx.png. The issue is that all those png are not compressed and usually large. When dealing with Hi-Def media they are extremely large, each is 4-5 MB in size at the least. Is there a way I can set the option for compression of png images. If I use imagemagick the same files get compressed to like 1.5MB of png file.

I have to nice it to get it to relent, but this is a new issue for the upgrade. Streaming mp3 doesn't register very much.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using mplayer with vdpau enabled in Ubuntu 10.10. It works very well in general, reducing cpu usage for hd from 50% to 60% to around 10 -15% or less. There is however one slightly annoying problem. It is that mplayer would appear to "forget" its vdpau output setting once in a while and especially after rebooting. When that happens it needs to be "reset" in order to use vdpau. "Resetting" basically just means opening gnome-mplayer and change video output to xv and then back to vdpau again.
I should clarify that the setting has not actually been lost, it still says "vdpau", it just need resetting).

View 7 Replies View RelatedI can successfully play h264 and vc1 encoded HD videos with vdpau acceleration using Gnome MPlayer or SMplayer, but in order to accomplish this, I have to provide -vc ffh264vdpau/ffvc1vdpau as an extra argument for MPlayer. Now this totally sucks as I have to manually type this in for HD videos and remove for all others every single time... What's worse is that I have to know what the video is in advance so I first need to analyze it before playing.So, I figured that if there's a way to tell MPlayer to aways use ffh264vdpau codec for h264 and ffvc1vdpau for vc1 videos, I'd be free to just click and watch.
View 9 Replies View RelatedA few days ago, all streaming on my 10.10 stopped working, except flash. MPlayer in firerfox is not working anymore, neither is streaming internet radio with rhythmbox. Radio stations that worked only days ago stopped responding, giving an error message that the location was not found.
Does this have anything to do with gstreamer maybe?
