Ubuntu :: MM 10.10 Viewing Vista Shares Over LAN / Doesn't List All Data And Folders

Apr 20, 2011

1. Maverick Meerkat 10.10
2. Vista Ultimate

I'm successfully connecting to my Vista desktop via my laptop running MM;I can view my shares but not all my data. All top level shares seem to be visible, it's when I go deeper that I notice not everything is showing up. The folders are accessible if I type the full path, and then again I have the same issue once I'm inside that folder where not all data is visible.

In Nautilus setting: Edit>Pref>Preview Tab.I set preview for all files under 4GB which is the upper limit I can set. This made more files visible but not everything.I attempted to divide the directories in order to halve the size of the folders, this helped but not completely. The directories contain movie and picture files. The picture files are easier to divide more equitably between folders, but the movies being so large, managing folders sizes in that way doesn't help. I really don't want to divide my files according to this problem anyway. Sorting does not affect which folders and files are shown. Nothing is hidden, options to show hidden files on amd off, no help.

Ubuntu :: Vista Folders Bad To Reach (data Backup)

Apr 14, 2010

I have installed also Vista on my PC, but "Documents and Settings" f.e. is void if I mount the Vista partition. In this case its not very important. But a week ago i'd run a XP-Laptop with 9.04 live-CD for backup. That worked fine (The XP was very damaged). I put the 40GB data on my PC through the WLAN during one night without any aid else. All the XP files are well accessible. And I put it back later on a fresh XP.But what would have happen with a Vista-Laptop? Anyone an idea how to reach all Vista or 7 files with a live CD? Or at least from my installed 8.04 to installed Vista.

I think it works alternatively from Win7 running using a USB hard drive adapter if you change the rights on Vista or 7 on the connected hard drive. Not tested.

Networking :: Can't View List Of Shares In Nautilus But Can Browse Shares Directly?

Dec 11, 2008

I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.

Ubuntu :: Opening And Viewing Folders - Error 255

Feb 17, 2011

I switched to ubuntu in 2008 dual booting it with windows vista. I loved ubuntu but I began to run into a few issues and eventually went to windows only for a while. Well I am back into it as of november of 2010 since my windows Os was just ticking me off. I absolutely LOVE linux but I've run into the exact same issues I had before. The most pressing issue at the moment is the fact that for some reason when I click on anything in "places" such as documents, music, etc. nothing happens. This includes clicking on the HD on the desktop. I click and then menu goes away as if its going to open the folder but it doesn't. Going to computer works and I can go from there but I want to know why this has happened seemingly out of the blue and happened both times I installed ubuntu? When I typed sudo nautilus into terminal I get the following:

Code:
xavier@xavier-Vostro1510:~$ sudo nautilus
[sudo] password for xavier:
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
** (nautilus:19375): WARNING **: Failed to get the current CK session: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager.GeneralError: Unable to lookup session information for process '19375'

(nautilus:19375): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_value_free: assertion `value != NULL' failed
Nautilus-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory. Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

I am not sure exactly what this means but maybe it is a clue. I am actually planning on reinstalling linux at some point because I am dual booting and running out of room so I am gonna kick windows to the curb (it wont load up anyway) but I want to resolve this since its happened twice and will again i am sure.

General :: Viewing A Doc Using Vista/Word 2000 That Was Created Using Mint8?

Jun 10, 2010

I am new to Linux, these type of forums and open source programs other than Firefox. I am not sure that this is the proper place to ask this question. If not, I apologize and ask that you please direct me to the proper location. I look forward to being able to leave MS but would like to have documents that I create viewable by the Windows Word programs.

I am using Linux Mint 8 as a dual boot setup with Vista on my Presario lap top. When I am operating with Mint8 and create a simple doc and save it as a word 2000 document and place it in a folder I can locate and open it using Mint 8 very nicely. But, when I try to access it using Vista and Word 2000 it does not appear in the folder when I try to view "all files". Conversely, Not all of the documents, which were created using windows and already exist in my folders, jpeg files for sure, are visible when I look in a folder using Mint8 and try to view "all files". I did add to a doc that was created by Vista/Word using Mint8 Open office and those edits were viewable using either Vista/Word 2000 or Mint8 open office.

Ubuntu :: View Folder Address In Text When Viewing Folders In Window

Aug 10, 2011

Currently, whenever we open a folder like "media/DATA/Work/Projects/Linux" at the top of the window it views each folder/subfolder as a button like [media] [DATA] [Work] [Projects] [Linux]. So if you click a folder named "Ubuntu" within the "Linux" folder another button [Ubuntu] will be added.I like this feature, but often i find myself needing to copy and paste that address somewhere and all I can do really is type it out manually. Is there a way to also display the address location in text like "media/DATA/Work/Projects/Linux"??

Networking :: Samba Can Mount Some Vista Shares But Not Others?

Jan 30, 2010

I'm having trouble setting up samba to work with my vista machine. Whenever I try to mount certain shares I'm getting error 13- permission denied. Specifically, I'm trying to mount my entire C: with this command at the console:

mount.cifs //windows_box/C$ /mnt/windows -o username=tyler,password=****

I've also tried:

mount -t smbfs
mount -t cifs

The funny thing is that I CAN mount some other shares, but not all. My distro is slack-current. I've been following as many relevant threads on this issue for a while now and have tried as many of the suggestions as I could understand, but it's getting to the point that I've lost track of what I've tried and what I haven't. Things I have tried:

Checking permissions on the shares: seem to be ok
enabling encrypted passwords: not sure if I did it right.
editing the registry for LmCompatablity

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Shares For Non-user Owned Folders?

Mar 11, 2010

I've setup a Moodle server on 9.10 server, and have been able to share user folders back to the windoze machines on the home net. What I'd like to do is share the Moodle main folder (and descendents) likewise. The problem is that it's owned by root. For ther user folders, as long as the owning user was logged in they were able to mark the folder as shared and everything worked very smoothly. When I try to mark the moodle folder as shared, no suprise I get a permission error. Is there a way of doing a "sudo su" from the GUI desktop to allow this to happen? Or do I have to set up the share from a command line (after having done a sudo su)? Can anyone give me the magic commands needed to do such?

Ubuntu :: Automatically Mount Two Shares From Windows Vista SP2 Host - Error - 112

Jan 30, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and I'm trying to automatically mount two shares from the Windows Vista SP2 host. Currently this is failing with the message "mount error(112): Host is down".

I recently upgraded VMWare Server. Before the upgrade I was able to mount shares without a problem. I can still mount shares on the host using the builtin "Connect to server" feature in Gnome. The problem I'm running into is mounting shares via the command line or via fstab. The relevant lines from my fstab are below.

Just a couple notes: the IP address of the host is static on the virtual network, so using the IP address as the server name should not be an issue. Also, I am able to ping the host fine (which obviously must be true for me to mount using the Gnome feature).

Fedora Servers :: Samba Shares And Windows Vista - Cannot Authenticate

May 22, 2009

I had an older fedora box (I think it was Core 3) that acted as my file server in my small network (4). It worked fine when I had all XP clients connecting to it. Server :: Slow Speed While Connecting To Samba File Shares From Vista

Mar 6, 2010

I have set up a file server (Ubuntu Server Edition) for our lab. People can connect to common Samba file shares from their personal laptops/desktops, which run either Windows Vista or Mac OSX. The guys with OSX have upload/download speeds of ~2 MB/s, while the Vista machines are slogging away at ~200kb/s for downloads and ~400kb/s for uploads. In both cases, the connection are through wired ethernet ports which should function identically. Since the Macs work fine on the same network, I assume this is a Vista issue.

I have tried troubleshooting one of the Vista machines by:
1. Turning off the Remove Differential Compression feature
2. Disabling autotuning following these instructions
3. Adding a registry key following the same link above.

But nothing has improved. Anybody have any advice on addition tweaks to the Vista machine? Is there a chance that this is actually a server-side/samba issue?

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Shares Folders But Not Printers Until Restart The Smbd Service?

Jul 18, 2010

Just like the title states, as soon as my server comes up, I see the samba share that I made and can browse it just fine.

I don't see the printer share nor can I print to the shared printer until I execute service smbd restart from an ssh login. Then I see the printer and then I can network print.

Before restarting smbd, I do check to see if it's already running and it is (two instances are running in fact). When I restart smbd, there are still two smbd services running but they have higher PID numbers (and I can then print).

I'm running 10.04. how to make it all start up happily the first time without any intervention from me?

Networking :: When On The Network, Can See The Shares Just Fine, But If Use A Crossover Cable, Cannot See Or Access The Folders?

Mar 3, 2011

I have a home network and I use Samba to share files. Now when I am on the network, I can see the shares just fine, but if I use a crossover cable, I cannot see or access the folders or files. My goal is to use a crossover cable from one computer with clonezilla to my server in order to use Samba to make an image of my workstation and save the image on my server. But everytime I try to connect with clonezilla I get a persmissions error and the share will not mount. I tried going to the shell and mounting as root, but that did not work either.

I have another server which is only a console and it works though I am unsure why. The share though is a mounted usb drive while on the one that does not work, it is on the internal hard drive.I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or anything I could try to narrow down the problem. Oh, I can access the share using ssh, but not samba. One other thing, the shares are set to allow read/write access to everyone so I don't see why I can not access it.

Ubuntu :: Recovering Data Of Vista Hard Drive ?

Apr 25, 2010

I am trying to transfer files from a SATA hard drive with Windows Vista (Home Premium) installed on it. Some files I can easily copy over, others just say Access Denied.

I'm sure permissions is part of the issue, unofrtunately Windows is unable to boot at all (surpise surprise) so I can't adjust anything from within in. I know with XP drives I can easily copy and paste onto my Ubuntu machine. I'm using a SATA to USB converter that let's me plug it in and my desktop reads it like an external hard drive.

I've gone into the properties and under permissions it shows my account as having access to Create and delete files under folder access amd "---" under File access. My group and others show None and --- for Folder and File access. I can post a link to a screenshot tomorrow. I've tried to also select Read and Write for File access but it goes back to the dashes before I can apply it.

I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 and do not have the sharing aspect installed. Any questions please feel free to ask me.
