Ubuntu :: When Computer Boots Half Of Panel Icon Goes Missing?
Oct 1, 2010
Sometimes when I boot my computer the icons on the panel (pieces of them) are missing. Like half of my wireless just the mail icon from the indicator applet half the trash can or show desktop or just the power button from the indicator applet session. After I log out and log back in either once or twice that usually fixes it. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with gnome 2.30.2.

I was having some problems with audio and java #post10609906), so I uninstalled pulseaudio, which removed the volume control icon from the notification area. However, even after reinstalling pulseaudio and ubuntu-desktop(which got removed), the sound control isn't there, although the internet connection icon in the notification area is still thereNote: Another thread said that adding notification area to the panel would restore it. I've tried that, but it only shows the internet icon and not the volume control.

I'm not quite sure what it's called, but it's the one with the speech-bubble next to my account name... I've looked everywhere, but because I don't know what it's called I can't find it.on the forum I can only find ways to get the mail icon back.

In 11.04 on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop, there are two logins. User1 has sudo privs, User2 does not. When either user logs in, network-manager picks up on whatever remembered wireless network is available, connects, and the nm icon shows in the panel. If the other user logs in (via Switch User), the connection persists, but the nm icon does not show in the panel.
Under 11.04 it appears there is no way to put the nm icon back in the panel, even when the connection is set to "available to all users", and even when the user missing the icon is User1 (who has sudo privs). If control is now switched back to the first user who logged in, the nm icon is still there, and the system is still connected, but if that user logs off (rather than clicking Switch User), the connection is dropped, and when the other user gives their password to resume their session, there is now neither connection nor an icon with which it can be re-established.
This would appear to be a bug, but is there a way to ***FORCE*** the nm icon to appear in the panel? The connection is already set to "available to all users", and doing a networking start does not do anything. Under 11.04 it appears that there is no way to make any icon appear in the panel if it is not already there.

I'm missing my top (and only) panel, I can't access anything on my computer now except firefox and movieplayer since they are what comes up when I restart, I guess that's because I opted to save my running applications during my last session. I also did some updates... I've read a couple other posts about the same thing but they were in xubuntu and none of the fixes are valid for me...
I'm running ubuntu 9.10 just installed it last week, on my acer one netbook. everything was dandy until tonight when I rebooted and found that my panel is gone... Right click on the desktop shows no way to get it back, no route to applications or add panel. I didn't do anything to get rid of it it's just gone... Is this a known issue with the updates or kernel does anyone know?

Hello everyone. I switched over to Fedora a little while ago, maybe a month or two, towards the end of when 12 was out. 12 ran just fine, but around when I upgraded to 13 I started experiencing issues. I first upgraded by switching repositories and installing via yum, which seemed to run fine for awhile. However, came to the point where about every other boot (a little more often, actually), the system would crash at the login screen, not allowing me to login. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or other rescue keys don't work- in fact, if the mouse is still working, they freeze the pointer as well.
Finally I decided to get the 13 DVD and re-install. Downloaded, media checked out, ran the install... and I'm still having the same issues. I know I should be providing more info here, but I'm not sure what log files to look for and post here. A few notes of relevance are that I've tried changing the ACPI settings in my BIOS to be as compatible as possible, and also tried booting using noacpi, which doesn't seem to be fixing it- I also have Nouveau installed.
So, what should I do? Anything I need to provide to help troubleshoot, I'll gladly do.

my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:
the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.
finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.
usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.
this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.
right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.
the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??

New Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

I recently upgraded from XP to Kubuntu, and I noticed that during partitioning (during installation) I could only partition 80GB out of the 160GB I should have.
Code:
df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 71G 2.8G 64G 5% /
none 719M 296K 718M 1% /dev
none 723M 0 723M 0% /dev/shm
none 723M 92K 723M 1% /var/run
none 723M 0 723M 0% /var/lock
none 723M 0 723M 0% /lib/init/rw
none 71G 2.8G 64G 5% /var/lib/ureadahead/debugfs
/dev/sdb1 7.1G 5.8G 964M 86% /media/disk
Code:
sudo fdisk -l | grep Disk
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000ed7ef
Disk /dev/sdb: 8004 MB, 8004132864 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000a154d
Also, at Grub there are several old Ubuntu selections from a previous install I did a long time ago; not the next oldest 1 or 2 Kubuntu versions, older Ubuntu versions.

My desktop has been shifted about half way to the right and a "black hole" has been left. I'm not sure how else to describe this, so I will include a picture to try to make things clearer:
I have no idea how I have done this. The Android SDK Emulator is the only thing I have downloaded and played with recently. I've checked monitor settings, changed the background image, adjusted the number of desktops (all desktops are affected), logged out & back in and rebooted. I'm not sure where else to look. Googling hasn't given me any more clues so far.
Everything else is working fine. Windows will open up normally and cover up the "black hole". Although they do leave an after-image, particularly when you move them around - like a 70s video clip!

I have a new sony vaio VPCF11NFX/B with a fresh install of Lucid. I am using a VGA-out to a LCD monitor. It shows up and is recognized. I cannot get video to appear on my laptop monitor. Moreover, when I unplug my external monitor, I cannot boot into ubuntu. It brings me to low graphics mode and I can't do anything from there because half of the screen is missing.

I'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:
HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050
When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.
I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.
PD: My grafic card is a Matrox G550.

I recently upgraded to 11.04, and after messing around with Unity for awhile decided I'd try out Gnome 3.After rebooting to finish the installation, I noticed that the interface had reverted to what my desktop looked like in 10.10, except the color scheme was different. I also got an error message saying my computer's graphics couldn't handle Gnome 3 (I'm on a netbook). Then I went online to look up instructions on how to switch back to Unity (since the option wasn't available on the login screen). After following the first step, which involved entering a command into the terminal, I left the house for awhile.
When I got back, the screen was black with white text (terminal-esque) asking for my username. After typing it in and pressing enter, it asked for my password, and after entering that it became a "terminal". This screen comes up every time I start my computer now, and I have no idea what to do. I could reinstall Ubuntu from a flash drive, but I want to be able to access my files. Is there any way to get around this, or recover my files without taking out the hard drive? As you can probably tell from my post, I'm very new to Ubuntu and Linux, and the mess I'm now in is the result of acting on uneducated impulse.
