I create a link to a file in order to open the file from the desktop. When I move the link from the file location to the desktop, the file is opended in read-only mode. How can I change this so that the file opens in regular mode so that I am able to edit contents? The file in question is an open office spreadsheet.

View 6 Replies View Relatedafter successfully configuring the dwa-552 to work in master mode in ubuntu 10.04 (ath9k driver) I ran some file transfer tests. The download speed is very good (~50mbps) but the upload speed spikes at about 10-20mbps for the first few KB and then it's nonexistent (0-1kbps). This only affects file transfers or otherwise bandwidth consuming processes. Normal web browsing or ssh is not affected. After running a speedtest of my internet connection which is routed through the AP I could upload to the internet with 1mbps which is my inet connection maximum so apparently this is not affected. Tried the same file transfers with netcat to eliminate any other factors and had the same problem. dmesg and hostapd debug did not report anything unusual

To make changes I have to save the file or click on edit button but if I click on edit button then file get renamed as Untitled document.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI could use some input. I have just recently installed Squeeze and KDE4 as I had hoped that the kinks had been worked out. Anyway, here is the situation: If I click on a link in kmail or kopete (haven't tried other apps yet) the default web browser never opens. Okay, can deal with that but instead what happens is my screen is filled with notifications literally by the hundreds, that konqueror is being started. No window ever opens but the task-bar is then filled with tabs for konqueror. I could not get this to stop and had to kill X (as my settings are to save the state of running apps when logging off. Thus if I just log off over 100 instances of konqueror will be saved and restarted when I log back in). Some things that may be relevant: The box has a 2.3GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. According to mem there is only 12MB of free physical RAM when the system has been booted and logged into. Other things still work, other applications still start and close although be it slowly. Once X restarts and I log back in, if I manually run konqueror it starts but with an error message that a previous session has crashed and would I like to restore that session. I tell it no as I don't want the whole thing starting over. I can drag and drop links in to konqueror and things work as expected. Starting konqueror from a terminal works fine as does using the run box and any link directly to the program. I am not sure how to simulate me clicking on a link to have the program run from a terminal so I can look for error messages. I have tried to search the web for info but I have recieved absolutely ZERO useful hits in nearly 10 pages. If this is not due to my system running out of resources I am thinking it is a bug I need to report. However, at the moment, I have described to you all things the best I could and I doubt with out something more it won't do much good to report it as my other Squeeze installs on an 800MHz system with only 512MB of RAM don't have this problem even though they run slower than molasses in January left outside in Alaska.
In the mean time I have made it so the system messages don't keep filling my screen by disabling the pop-up notifications. This hasn't changed the fact that hundreds of instances of konqueror are trying to be opened though when I forget to first open konqueror and then drag a link into it. At the moment, this is a completely stock install using only the first DVD that is only a week old. Here is the DVD info: "Official Snapshot i386 DVD Binary-1 20100823-05:10"

I have a dual boot (WinXp, Ubuntu) on my machine. Unbuntu is installed in the same partition of WinXp. Evertime i have to access a windows file or folder i mount the windows drive using the following command

This works just fine. My problem is that all the files are loaded with -rwxrwxrwx and the directories drwxrwxrwx. I cannot change the file mode bits using chmod even in su mode. chmod incidentally works just fine and does not give any error. But the file mode bits are still the same.
I have sandisk usb and want to get rid of the "U3" partition that's on it, but its a read-only file system. can't chmod to 777 from root

I've a popular vbulletin forum (10k max in vbulletin stats 'whos online') runnin in two servers like this:
1) Web server running vBulletin.

Web server connects to MySQL using private LAN.
Web-php server works with xcache as recommended by vBulletin.
Image/avatars and other static files (css, js, etc) are on a CDN
MySQL server uses Memcached for caching common queries.
The problem I'm facing, is from time to time (let's say one or two times a week) the Web server goes into read only mode... then the server has to be rebooted in order to get online normally and be able to work. From the logs I've seen this:

This is a new server, and in the old server the 'read only mode' issue happened very often too... so I guess it's not a HD issue.. it's just the HD have a heavy I/O usage. What do you think?
I am thinking about this solutions to improve the webserver performance:
1) 75% of the vbulletin users are anonymous users, so I've been thinking about using Cloudflare as a cache for all that traffic, that would reduce the php-webserver process a lot.
2) Using an external email server is a good option I guess... as right now the webservers also handles the email notifications for all the vbulletin users and it is constantly sending email everywhere. So, email will be stopped to gain server performance.
3) Mounting partitions with 'noatime' at /etc/fstab seems to improve I/O performance.
I'd like to ask about archive mounter feature, can I mount zip file with read write mode? can gvfsd-archive do that?, or I must use fuse-zip to mount it? If I must use fuse-zip, how I wrap it so I can use it via nautilus or via gvfs-fuse-daemon

Can you make a symlink read only? I have about 100 users who all have a .login. They like to modify their .login, which is fine in most cases, but sometimes they do it wrong & it screws up a LOT of the things they are supposed to be doing. Because of this, I'm going to lock down all .logins & I thought, "wouldn't it be nice if we could modify one file & all users would get the modification?" So I'm currently testing having everyone's .login point to a central .login via symlink. It works fine, but it appears that the users can [re]move the link & replace it with a file, thus defeating the purpose. Can I lock down the symlink so the user cannot move or remove the link? FWIW, it must be a symbolic link (as opposed to a hard link) as the file it points to is on an NFS share (not the same file system).

1) it cannot see any networks around
2) i cannot setup it in master mode to use my PC as a router
As far as i can see, the device is recognized and the correct driver (rt73usb) is loaded. I was able to connect to a laptop somehow (the laptop could see other networks and the adapter's PC-to-PC network). I'd like to make it work as a router, i.e. share my internet connection (eth0) via wlan0. Here is what i have:

I have one install that I have managed to get anything that I cannot right click and choose what I would like to open it in to open in Movie Player (totem) and for the life of me cannot remember where setting is. Did this before but cannot seem to remember how I fixed it. Anything under Places drop down menu you cannot right click on and select to open so opens in movie player.

The error is caused by "read only system" mode. It can't write anything onto the HDD. I can't even change /etc/fstab file with nano or anything else. Btw is server edition. I mean when I want to save the file (fstab) same damn thing read-only system how can I change that?

I did not change anything on the system. I have su access and really nothing is new on this laptop. Any thoughts one what i can look at? I need to write data to usb all the time. After that proceedure I opened the spreadsheet and when I click on a cell to see the formula I get the message "document opened in read only mode". Other documents open fine.
