I use to be able to mount a usb and stick and copy over files to it. Now when I plug it in it mounts as read only and I cannot change it. I did not change anything on the system. I have su access and really nothing is new on this laptop. Any thoughts one what i can look at? I need to write data to usb all the time. I rebooted too. same issues.

I have a 1TB external usb hard drive that has worked perfectly, but recently I set it up a mount point for it in fstab so that I could create a SMB share on the drive so I could stream videos and pictures to my TV through my Wii using WiiMC. This now works perfectly, but now the hard drive has been set into read-only mode. When I use sudo to try to chmod the drive or the folders on it, it does nothing. When I right-click on the drive and check the permissions tab, it says the owner is root and all the options are greyed out.
I've read through several posts on similar topics to this, but none of them have been very helpful as they suggest using command line tools that I don't know how to use, so I'm hoping someone here can give me concise, step by step instructions of what to type in, or what settings to change in fstab to solve my little problem so I can start copying stuff back onto my drive. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and the filesystem on the external drive is FAT32. Here's some more info you might need:

I have a problem in my ubuntu 10.01 that it can't load a drive/volume in ubuntu. When I tried, it said: "Unable to mount location Error mounting: mount: /dev/sda1: can't read superblock". And when I boot my pc with 'Windows', it said : "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" under a blue screen. What can I do to solve this problem?
View 9 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I began to get messages about my hard drive running out of space, and while I tried to clear out some files to make room I somehow managed to mess something up such that my main login screen appeared with hugely distorted letters and dialog boxes, and it wouldn't let me log in. While this is still the case, I can now log in by booting to recovery mode, selecting the netroot option, doing an "su myusername", and then executing "startx".
While this is a little inconvenient, it does bring up my standard Ubuntu operating environment and I now have access to all my files, email, internet, etc. There are still a few miscellaneous things that are messed up, however, and I don't yet know how to fix themIn particular:a) I can't print. I tried running the printer configuration tool from the System->Administration menu, but there's no "New Printer" icon. Alsowhile trying to get it working, I managed to generate a "The cups scheduler is not running" error message.b) I can't mount a USB drive. Every time I plug one in, I get an error message that says "Unable to mount drive, not authorized."c) Finally, there's the basic problem of still not being able to login without going thru my recovery mode workaround.I suspect all these problems are related, though I'd be happy to fix them one at a time if that's what it takes.
I just bought a 32GB USB drive, and it was working fine.All when i tried to use it later, it would only mount as read-only.You'd tell me to check the switch which some USB drives have, well this one doesn't have one.Does this sound like anything to anyone?

it doesn't give me any response so I presume it succeeded but when I try to touch it, it tells me it's a read-only file system
Also I have all files it asks for installed including dostools..Btw I used usb creator, then went to gparted and did something. The system is fat 32 now but with same message, not including ext4 part. Just the mount point message, and something about dosftools and mtools, wihich also are installed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've rebooted my system like 30 minutes ago...and all the sudden I get the error related the that program in ubuntu 8.04 that checks the disk after reboot for bugs an stuff like that. The error is caused by "read only system" mode. It can't write anything onto the HDD. I can't even change /etc/fstab file with nano or anything else. Btw is server edition. I mean when I want to save the file (fstab) same damn thing read-only system how can I change that?

After that proceedure I opened the spreadsheet and when I click on a cell to see the formula I get the message "document opened in read only mode". Other documents open fine.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.
I am using Fedora 14 64 bit with two 1T drives. There is a Raid 1 for the important information and I use a Raid 0 for cached files that can be generated on the fly. Yesterday my Raid 0 went into read only mode.

I have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. I have a weird problem here with a 9.04 server. We have a raid 5 disk formatted in EXT4 which remounted automatically when we accessed to the lost+found folder which is in the root of that disk.
I tried to delete it but I can't. It's a bit annoying because I have to prevent all users and backups to access to that folder.
How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent.
