View 2 RepliesI installed the latest Openoffice.org from Openoffice website on an old 8.04 install. I downloaded the 64 bit .deb version for Ubuntu. All went well. OO3.3 runs well. My question is can you use the Ubuntu Open and Save dialogs? The one where you have drives on the left side. All that comes up with this version is a basic Open or Save dialog. The OO that comes with Ubuntu has these menus. Is there anyway to get these with Openoffice downloaded from the OO website?

For example, sometimes when I create a bookmark in Chrome, you click the Folder button to have it popup a list of folders where you can put the bookmark. Sometimes clicking this causes it to pop open and stay open. Other times clicking it opens it for a second and then it immediately closes. To be able to select a folder when its acting like this I have to click and hold the mouse button and then select what I want while continuing to hold the button. This doesn't only happen in Chrome. Sometimes it happens while setting ubuntu settings in the OS itself or in other applications.
Is this a bug? Why is the behavior inconsistent?
I am running 10.04 and I have a serious problem with the Open office menus and tool bars, as you can see from the screenshot, they are corrupted. I have tried totally removing and re-installing Oo, but with no joy.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been dealing with "blurred" menus on my openoffice and I'm not quite sure how to approach it. I've done some google searching but perhaps I'm using the wrong terms because nothing helpful is coming up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've basically gone and messed up my entire desktop. The curious (idiotic) me was experimenting with the desktop, and went and somehow deleted all the panels. After 3 days of frustration, I've been unable to recover any form of menu or panel. So far, I've tried restoring the defaults from the terminal. Unfortunately, I can't open a terminal window. I can run it using Ctrl+Alt+F2, but it refuses to open any windows or run any programs. Most commands give me some form of 'cannot open display.' I can't minimize windows without losing them so my workspace is a mess, I can't run nautilus as root so I can't access Synaptic, and the list basically goes on and on.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhenever I want (for example) save a file from the internet with Firefox, I can't because Firefox does not open the "save as" window of Dolphin. Also, when I want to save my bookmarks in Firefox, I can't because Firefox can not open the "save as..." window.
There is no failure message, no crash, just nothing. Like as the request is simply ignored. Any Ideas what might be wrong in my system? The system is OpenSuse 11.3 64 Bit with KDE 4.6 and all current updates.
The visual file manager Midnight Commander has the menus Left, File, Command, Options and Right.
Is there any shortcut key to open these menus?
I've just upgraded to 9.10 and found that the menus in Open Office are unintelligible gray blocks.
Many apps are fine, like Firefox, gimp and thunderbird, but OO is scrogged up. I also noticed that Quanta has unintelligible sub menus although the top level menus are readable. The lists of files in Quanta are gray blocks, but if you click on a folder, the file names appear, then chaneg back to gray blocks if you click the folder again. Tried reinstalling Quanta but no success.
when I move the cursor over things or open menu's I hear a little sound inside my computer... ALMOST like its writing to disc, but the hard drive light indicates otherwise.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis must've been done before: I want to keep a log file open in terminal so I can monitor updates to it as they occur. My searches are coming up with everything but this situation... I must be missing some terminology or something key, because people do this all the time inside of other programs (NetBeans, or rails server, for example).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just downloaded the Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS Install CD for the desktop. I am concerned that I have downloaded the wrong ISO or that the CD that I burned is not behaving properly. Unlike all of the other Ubuntu "Live CDs", this one doesn't offer you a choice of what Ubuntu does at Boot-up. There's no menu that asks what you'd like to do. This CD doesn't give you choices like:
- Test Drive Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer
- Install Ubuntu
- Test CD for Errors
- Test Memory
- Boot from Hard Disk
Instead, this CD just boots right to a Gnome desktop. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but it turns out the the CD is performing some actions behind my back that I don't like. All that I wanted to do was to check the CD for errors to make sure that it burned properly. I didn't want it installing on the system where I was doing the burning. Instead of giving me options at boot, the CD automatically loaded Gnome, and then proceeded to mount all of the drives on my system, and then attempted to establish connection to IP address 91.189.90.132. I didn't like that. Luckily my firewall is secure enough that it stopped this unauthorized outbound data traffic dead in its tracks. I used reverse DNS to look up the owner if IP address 91.189.90.132. Here's what I found:
Code:
http://whois.domaintools.com/91.189.90.132
IP Information for 91.189.90.132
[code]....
Is this a Live CD, where you have some options about what to do at boot-up, or is this only an install CD? This information isn't clearly spelled out on the download page. this LiveCD taking control of my computer, mounting my drives, and then establishing contact with Canonical Ltd., without even giving me a menu option before doing so.
I'm experiencing a two or three problems with (I think) the Unity desk top. I'm not sure they're related so I'll post them as separate threads. Here's the second.
When I boot up Ubuntu the initial desktop related menus, which should appear at the left hand side of the top menu bar, are not visible until after I've launched and then minimised an application (doesn't appear to matter which application). Once I've done that the menus reappear.
I wanted to make my boot logging pretty hence used this shell script from As given in the instructions therein, I just copied the shell script in /etc/ directory with the name lsb-base-logging.sh and gave the shell script executable rights. ($ sudo chmod +x lsb-base-logging.sh) . After booting up with the new boot script I did not like it. (seemed more ugly than the default option). Now while I have removed the executable bit its still showing the ugly (or pretty as you look/feel it) modified bootup./etc$ ll lsb-base-logging.sh -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1337 Aug 16 18:48 lsb-base-logging.shDo I need to completely remove the script for the default boot to come back.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to get Linux to log all of the output that you see on the screen at boot?
It would sure beat having to dig through all of the different log files trying to find what was seen while it was booting.
I have a troubling issue. I log into Linux Mint 9 (fully up-to-date) on my Samsung Q320 laptop with power connected and after a few minutes it seems like the entire X session dies, I am logged out, all processes are killed and I am presented with the normal GDM login screen. When I first installed Linux Mint, this never happened. I have the NVidia closed-source driver installed and when the system logs me out, it immediately restarts X loading the NVidia driver which flashes the logo on screen. This all happens instantaneously, so it is not a reboot of the machine, just a restart of the display manager it seems.
There does not seem to be any cause for this. I have disabled all screen saver and power management settings that may lead my system to auto-logout of Gnome. The system log doesn't indicate anything unusual happening. Confused about where to to take it from here bar and fresh install of the OS. Perhaps there are some X11 logs I should be checking.
Update: Moved to Ubuntu 10.10 and its recommended NVidia driver and have not experienced this problem since.
So I have seen several super boot disks based on winpe(Like Bartpe super boot disk) out there and I am wondering if anyone can happen to point me to one that is based off open source software.
Super Boot Disk = A single boot disk that accomplishes a great many common tasks needed to rescue a system.some things that I am looking for in this would be: Virus scan, memory test, bootloader recovery, hard disk drive recovery/testing, gparted, clonzilla.and whatever else you could think of.I see that gparted and clonzilla both have live cd's available..but im looking to only carry one disk.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat onto my Asus Eeepc 1215n notebook. I previously had Windows 7 installed, and still do, but it wont boot anymore due to the error stated below.
Everything was working ok;
Grub 2 is installed and shows
Code:
Both win7 and ubuntu were dual booting fine. Then I was intrigued by the windows vista, so clicked to load vista, and it came up with the "recover, backup, exit" options, so I exited. Next time I tried to open win7 I receive this error:
Code:
windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix problem:
1. insert our windows installation disc and restart your computer
2. choose your language settings and click "next"
3. click "repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
File: NSTAutoNeoGrub0.mbr
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
I'm not at home at the moment, so cant back up my whole c: drive, so I don't really want to use the recover option from the vista partition.
Also Ive tried using this recovery CD, but I do not have a CD drive, and using unetbootin and universalUSB installer both just show the option of "default" with a 10second countdown when trying to boot the recovery CD from usb.
I had dual boot system with XP as the primary partition. XP became corrupted and I reformatted and made a clean install of this partition which has removed the grub loader for Ub on second partition. Is there any way to get back to Ubuntu without deleting this partition and reloading it from my live disc?

I facing lot of initial hiccups in using Ubuntu as i came from Win XP.
I am not able to see any menus in the home screen. No right click is available on desktop. While searching in forum, I came to know that there will be menu in the desktop. and also run option(Alt+F2 or so). But I don't have any menu except top bar with Ubuntu Logo and status bar and Launcher Bar. Alt+F2 is not working.
I am trying windows kind of desktop/menus/look and feel. I installed Cairo-Dock. which has menu item "application menu". But it seems my system struck due to this.
I have another system with XP OS. Both are in same lan. Inorder to communicate between both I tried xipmsg. I cant find the application under applications launcher. From terminal if i give this command, small gui is opened. where there are no users found . also printing this error at closing. "XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0". after 1844 requests (1844 known processed) with 0 events remaining."
Then I installed ipmsg for windows using WINE. Its giving 3 errors in the startup and my system name only available in the users list . When I press Refresh, that name also vanishes. Then I installed Genome IPmsngr, where I could not find single entry similar to xipmsngr. sometimesstatus icons of LAN/wireless & ipmsngr coming out of status bar and showing below the status bar.
Also getting following errors while hibernate. btusb bulk complete: hci0 urb efdc5280 failed to resubmit(1).
can someone direct me how to install Ubuntu as a dual boot on my open suse 11.2 I could not find any installing instructions. if someone could give me a link or direct me ,
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am going to attempt to install Ubuntu Linux onto an 500GB USB external hard drive. I was wondering what my boot options where as i am installing on to a powermac G5 that uses open firmware. From the boot menu, i dont have the option to boot to USB(like i can from firewire, CD or Internal HD) though i have found this page;URl...this enables me to boot from usb and works fine with Mac Os X (as i had to do this to boot from a usb stick i installed the os on when doing a spot of data recovery) but i'm not sure if it would boot into linux cleanly. I'm also unsure as to wether in instalation i'd need to install yaboot or not, and if not wether this is actualy an option o n the install cd.
Any info on whether anybody had installed a similar system, had any experience installing onto open firmware for an external Usb hard drive booting system or just any general knowledge about linux on open firmware.
When menus in gnome are too long to fit on screen, there appear two arrows in the menu, one at the top and one at the bottom. When I hover over the down arrow, it starts scrolling, but when I then try to click on one of the items, it jumps back to the original position as soon as the cursor leaves the down arrow.
This is very annoying, as I can't reach all entries in for example my preferences menu. Is there a workaround for this?
My son and I both have Acer AO532h netbooks, his is still running UNR 10.04 but I've "upgraded" to UNR 10.10 (quotes because it's caused a fair bit of hassle and I'm not sure the launcher is an improvement). We both installed Freeciv this morning. I was able to find in forums how to get it to behave on a 1024x600 screen using (Game > Local > Options > Interface > "Arrange widgets for small displays") but was only able to get this to work on the 10.04 install.
On my 10.10 UNR install, freeciv client has NO MENUS. Mine is freeciv 2.2.1, and once started, the client window only shows "File" menu, and its only item is "Close". His install is 2.1.10 on UNR 10.04 and he's playing away with the above setting changed. I will now try to figure out how to regress to freeciv 2.1.10.
I updated my Ubuntu 10.10 yesterday with Synaptic but didn't reboot until this morning. I can log in normally but that's it. I get a nearly blank screen with my selected wallpaper. There is no menu bar at the top of the screen (Menus for Application, System, etc; clock, cpu load, weather, network applets) and no taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I was able to get Firefox going by opening the one icon I had for an automatically mounted filesystem and going to "Get Help Online" in the Help menu. I can do little else. If I right-click on the screen, I get the menu to make folder, make document (which works), but the change background item doesn't run.
I can't switch to a terminal with Ctl-Alt-F7 and I can't see any way to open a terminal in Gnome without the Application menu.
I just installed audacity but to my surprise it has no menus it is just blank
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.04 last night and, when I found that I was having a tough time working with unity I tried to follow some of the online advice and revert to the classic desktop.
Unfortunately when I logged out, the login screen didn't have the expected menu allowing me to choose between unity and classic gnome. Then I made a big mistake. I logged in and opened the system settings menu from the drop down menu in the top right hand side of the screen (at the foot of the menu listing logout, shutdown, hibernate etc.). In there I found an option allowing me to choose my desktop environment at login. Instead of choosing Gnome, like an idiot I chose 'user defined' as my preferred environment, hoping it would allow me to choose between unity and classic at login so that i could get used to unity gently.
Now that I've restarted I'm left without any menu at all anywhere. The only way I've been able to get access to firefox is by creating a launcher on the desktop, I can't open a terminal and I'm such a ubuntu newbie that I can't think of what else to try.
All my usual files are there on the desktop, just nothing giving me access to any programmes or options.
I have several documents that I would like to put on a CD. I was wondering if there is a way to make a menu for the CD. Are there any Application out there that will allow me to do this in Ubuntu.
